I'm just not about to pay current prices for centerfire ammo. I've got plenty of it already, but I really don't want to deplete my supply. Although I have reloading equipment, I no longer have room to set it up. After some thought on these things, I've decided to do a LOT more rimfire .22 shooting, substituting firearms that have a resemblance to the centerfire guns I used to shoot so often. For example, instead of my bolt action .30/06 and .308 rifles, I've re-stocked a vintage Winchester Model 69A with a more adult-sized Monte Carlo stock, and scoped it. Now I get in all the practice I want on the cheap, with the bonus that I don't have to deal with recoil. I can concentrate on sight picture and trigger control. Same deal with my AR-15. I put together a folding-stock Ruger 10-22 with a banana magazine, scoped it, and now I can blaze away to my heart's content.

I used to shoot a LOT of .45 ACP in 1911s. I have two choices here. I can use my 45-22 Colt conversion unit for the feel and some of the recoil of the 1911. That floating chamber fouls easily, though, and cleaning it is a chore. My next choice in line is a Ruger 22/45 pistol that simulates the controls of the 1911 and duplicates its grip angle. Easy to clean with a lot less fuss and bother. I can do tactical drills with it and shoot all day for not a lot.

But this is the Smith & Wesson forum, right? How about revolvers? I'm covered there, too.

From top to bottom:

Model 17-4, 8 3/8" barrel, 1980.
Model 17-3, 6" barrel, 1977.
Model 18-4, 4" barrel, 1978

I will NOT submit to high ammo prices, and I WILL continue to shoot a lot. I'm just going to shoot more .22s! How about you? Shooting centerfire and enjoying it less, or shooting .22s more often and pocketing the savings to buy those guns you always wanted?

Paladin, I like your style but have one problem with your solution....you can't buy 22lr around here anymore than other ammo. I haven't seen a brick of 22's in so long I forget what they look like. I love to shoot my 22A 7" and the Winchester 250 rifle but am nearly out of ammo. Anybody out there having better luck than I am finding bricks of 22lr?

Funny you should mention that Paladin, in the last month I have bought or traded for Ruger MK III, a 617 10 shot, a 41 and a Stainless 77/22. I buy ammo every time I go to Walmart.

I feel your pain. At the Wal-mart here, you can get 9MM and .45 almost any day.

I have .45 running out my ears.

Can not get .22 ammo for love or money.

I am down to the bottom of the barrel on .22's.

Will trade you straight up .22 for 45 Bullet for bullet..I will even pay shipping!
LOL.....
I stocked up with some .22 last year, Still OK, Walmart here in SE.PA. still has bricks from time to time, And so do a few local shops. But it's $20 a brick.

The only 22LR ammo I've seen here in the last month has been priced @ $49/brick or $7.95/box/50!!! and that was in a PAWN shop that sells a lot of guns.

3 Wally World locations I've visited have only 22 SHORT @ $8/50~~~!!!!!
Good shot shell choice, but very few rifle rounds and NO other pistol ammo.....

I'm with you on the "shoot .22 cal on the cheap" frame of mind.

The last 3 or 4 revolvers I've bought have been Mod 17's or 18's.

If you've got kids or grandkids to take shooting it's a way to shoot a few hundred rounds without shooting up a Ben Franklin!

And Paladin, I just got the mate to that 8 & 3/8th Mod 17 you have!

It's always good to have a plan, and those are some nice sixguns Paladin.

Remember though, there'll be two things that you're missing, long range work and the recoil.

Shoot .22 for a year or two and when you do shoot your .45s agin it will be quite a shock.

Also, and say this quietly, are you sure that ammo prices will be coming back down? Did you see the trouble we're having now coming four years ago? :)

I too have been shooting a lot more 22lr and I reload my centerfire ammo.
Along with my 22 rifles and pistols I bought a CMG conversion unit (bolt) for my AR 15. Comes with a 25 rd mag. Now I get to shoot my AR which is a very weird sensation when it goes put_ put_ put.:)

Here's my "solution"...

Because I've always bought in bulk (to save $) and kept my stocks up every time I purchased any components...I've not felt the primer/brass/powder/projectile "pinch"...and for some reason, I also managed to keep a "few" .22s around and have not "had" to pay the ridiculous gunshow/auction prices to use my rimfires...I feel for those who did not have a nice stock on hand...the going rate for primers seems be $40-50/k at the gunshow I was at today!!! Ugh!

Awesome bench!

You really know how to make a guy feel bad.;)

I like your case trimmer (10' saw blade):D
Guessing it's a clock?

Paladin,
I have also opted to shoot my 22's more than CF since I will not pay those inflated prices for primers.
One local dealer is still charging the list price of $30/M for primers with a limit of 1000 primers but other are selling for $40+/M.
I reserve the pistol CF rounds for competitioin and practise with 22 conversion units attached to my Glock and 1911's or use the K-22 or S&W 617 in lieu of the K-38 and S&W 686. I wish that S&W offered a 22 conversion unit for their M&P series.

Pretty much the same as Paladin. Have been using a Colt conversion unit off and on since 1974 (I find Federal AE 38 gr HVHPs work very well in them) and a M18 .22 LR since 1982. I also shoot a lot of ball and dummy/skip load in revolvers. Also got a CMMG AR unit which works fine for practice out to 50 yds. Using a reduced half-size silhouette tgt that suffices for 100 yd practice.

I have never been one of these that carpets the ground with brass to have a good time, so my centerfire ammo stretches pretty well.

Last winter I cast up 2000 round balls for percussion revolver just to cover all the bases.

I have turned to 80% .22 cal. / 20% 9mm ( when it can be found at other than loan shark prices).

Between my S&W M17-6, My Beretta 92FS with a Beretta .22 cal conversion, my Sig P226-22 and Ruger Super Single Six I have it pretty well covered. Also the SIG will be upgraded to .40 cal. S&W in the near future.

I'm glad I had the foresight to purchase several thousand rounds of .22's late in '08 as they are now about a hard to find as center fire. I hope all this foolishness ends soon.

586L-Frame,
Good deal! You were lucky to locate a nice mess!

OCD1,
Thanks. It's really my only hobby so I've made it as easy to use as possible. The "clock" is a plate for the case feed.

PALADIN85020,
Thanks...I like supporting Mr. Dillon...good stuff.

It's pretty tough right now...I hope the situation turns around soon.
