Cased Combat Magnums

[Doc44]

Some of the early Combat Magnums were shipped in a dark blue presentation case that was nearly identical to the cases used for the 44 Magnum. No one knows for sure how many were shipped, but they are rarely seen. Below is a photo of K260190, shipped with a presentation case (numbered to the revolver) in May 1956. The second photo is of a Model 19-3, K940639, Class C-engraved and shipped with a mahogany presentation case in October 1971.

Curtis...the top of the case has the S&W logo like the 44 Magnum case, but has COMBAT MAGNUM written below it instead of 44 MAGNUM.

I'm wondering, can I send a Nickel Mod 29 back to S&W and get the "C" package that you've shown us on a couple of guns? It's reeally classy.

I guess I don't don't know if nickel guns are engraved before or after they are nickel plated.

I poured out my sob story some time ago about throwing away the presentation case for K260006 a few years ago.
The older Combat Magnums are my favorites, but I've only got 2 so far.

Probably not a typo. Since S&W does not ship in serial number numerical order, it is not unusual to see one number shipping substantially later than another number close to the first one. The ONLY way to positively identify when the revolver was shipped is to get a letter. Charts, lists and so forth are ESTIMATES only, and should NEVER be regarded as definitive.

In one of my personal all time gun screw ups I failed to bid on one that popped upon Flea Bay about 5-6 years ago. It went for slightly over $100. It was as described/shown with COMBAT MAGNUM on the top.

I just hadn't done enough research on the Combat Magnum back then. :-(
