(I should take a new picture with all my gear; this one's getting old)

S&W 617-4, 6", 10-shot, .22LR
S&W 686-5, 6", 7-shot, .357 Magnum (it hasn't seen a single magnum load, though--only hollow-base wadcutters)
S&W 625-6, 5", 6-show, .45ACP

All topped with UltraDot red-dot sights.

Nice set Valkyriekl, My 617 I got tired of the ten shot and put a 6 shot cylinder in it so I could use speed loader with it inbetween rounds.

Got more info on the two pre 14 k38's

The nickle is 1953 mint 99% but has wide rib std trigger and hammer and is double action...has original numbered grips

The blued is 1948 target hammer and trigger and is single action...has a clear cylinder ring ..well used but very well maintained at 97%.

I think I may go for the nickel I can always fire it single action.
Could remove DA from trigger.

They are at the top of the price range.

If I was fussy I could also get a target hammer and trigger and keep the original parts...

If you are going to change the old guns YES YOU ARE SCREWING UP. If you want it to shoot and build it to your liking buy the new ones and charge them. They are better made than the old, but alot of PRIDE was put into the old which makes them special when they are factory.

I have a distributor that has a few 6" 686s' chambered in .38 special only. They are new guns with the IL and would run around $650 to your FFL.

Matching front & rear sights.
Loaded, both guns are the exact same weight.

That lid scope mount is a Gil Hibberd mount. Excellent. I believe he is still in business in Knoxville IL.

If you are going to shoot 38 ammo wadcutter or ball you will only be creating alot of cleanup if you use a magnum over a 38 special only,I've heard some say the magnum cylinder adds accuracy over the 38, but any regular 6" model 14 or the 14-6 ,I think (with the underlug) will all shoot 10 ring or better with wad or ball at 50 yds, the only difference between the 2 is more weight (if needed) in the 14-6 model. bob

I would swear that I am more accurate with my Colt Officer's Model Match than with my model 15-3. But I don't know if that would be confirmed if each was fired from something like a Ransom Rest.

But that's the whole point! It's how the thing shoots from your hand that matters. You will find that your sight setting is different from everyone else.The way the gun recoils in your hand is different than anyone else as well. Your hand, gun, body, and ammo is a tuned system and it's unlike anyone else. I find that I make slight sight changes on my Air Pistol every once in a while, and it ain't the gun, we just change a bit day to day. Don Nygord (of blessed memory) used to say that thats why the sights have those screws on them. Even if the choice of gun is purely an emotional one that is valid too as everything we think about effects our shooting, you can't separate one from the other. You want to see something unexplainable watch a violinist pick a bow or violin sometime. you never know how that will turn out (my line of work)

Can you get a L frame that has the target sights? I have only seen one that had target sights, all of the rest I have found have the red ramp front sight vs the partridge blade.

Of course, the only reason you would use an S&W revolver for centerfire bullseye competition is that you can get better scores with it than you can with your Clark 1911.\

Perhaps he also wants to do Distinguished Revolver as well as BE, or the Harry Reeves Match, or ICORE...........so many opportunities for wheelgunners

For a 38 special target revolver in your price range , 6" K38 or a Colt OMM would be my choice . If you shoot SA in TF/RF I'd take the Colt . If you shoot DA I'd take the Smith . Either w/o mods can also be used in DR matches . I'd give the Colt an edge for accuracy as chambers & bore are tighter, plus Colt has a faster twist rate .

Well my bullseye guns are M 41, M 52 and 1911A1 and have been using there since about 1980 and have done quite well with this combination.
