Well, I found out today that my wife can get off of work to receive her Christmas present like I planned.

It seems there was a possibility of them not letting her off that I didn't know anything about when I made the decision to give her a 2 day, 3 night, hunt for Christmas.

Of course, she has to take me with her!

We are taking nothing but handloads for this trip.

We have hunted boar before and to be honest, they aren't that tough to kill. Never shot a Corsican Ram though and I think it will look neat on the wall next to old "Piggy". ;)

At any rate, we are going to take 4 rifles. Her 357Mag Marlin 1894CB, my 44Mag Marlin 1894CS, an AR-15 and a Remington 700 in 30/06.

I have been assured that our shots will not be longer than 100 yards when stand hunting and if stalking needs to be done, I think we can get closer than that.

At any rate, we are pumped! :D

The load for the 30/06 has already taken a pig for the wife a couple of years ago. She may decide to use it, not sure yet. The 357Mag rifle should be enough at the ranges stated to take a "normal" sized pig with.

I went to the range tonight to run some of them over the chronograph and see how accurate they were. I was impressed to say the least out of that 20" carbine.

The load came from LoadData.com and they said it appeared in Rifle magazine issue #226 - July, 2006. It is over other published data but suffice it to say, should be fine in the heavy action of the Marlin. Components were: 158gr XTP, mixed cases, Wolf Small Rifle Primers and Lil' Gun powder.
The article said I should get 1987fps. I got just a tad more than that and accuracy was superb.
Here were the results:
Low: 2038fps
High: 2086fps
Avg: 2064fps
ES: 48fps
SD: 17.64fps
These were exceptionally accurate and she is a good shot. Recoil was nill. Just have to make some for the trip now.

My Marlin is going to be stoked with 240gr JSPHP bullets over 23.5gr Lil' Gun with Wolf Large Pistol primers.
I don't have the exact numbers right now but they are going 1980fps with a single digit SD!
These are minute of sparrow accurate @ 50 yards, an was proven today.

The AR is a tad light for them for use on hogs. I've seen some videos though were the guy is shooting a bunch of hogs from a helicopter with an AR and they don't seem to be running too far after he hit them!

There has been much discussion in another thread about the velocity at which an XTP will open up. We will see just what happens to this 2000fps load! It may hit skin and "blow up" for all I know. I kind of doubt it as I have seen them at regular handgun velocities not open at all.

If they stay together and have minimal expansion, we should have some decent penetration.

At any rate, feel free to comment.

p.s. I will have pictures should we be successful. I will re-title the thread when I post those pictures.

Skip,

I posted this one another forum, but you may be able to glean some good information from Paco, especially concerning the lever guns in .357 Mag.

357 Magnum and the Literature

I still say you should make a slight detour and come by for a visit. ;)

I shot 1 deer with the 357, 158 grn Rem soft pionts. Penetration was not all that great. For a soft tissue shot it was fine. If I was to go larger game hunting with a 357 today I would load up some of my 180 grn hardcast Beartooth bullets over max win 296(H-110) charges. Sounds like your hunt is soon, you should be fine.

What-what’s going on here? No 38Spl with SR4756 and cast bullets. Say it isn’t so.:p;)

I got to thinking last night after posting my first reply to your comment, Dennis.

As a matter of fact, her first load that I developed for her to use in a handgun, her M586 6", was a load with a 158gr LSWC over a bunch of SR4756 from the Speer 7.9! :) It gave me 1280fps from the handgun while giving 1580fps from the 20" rifle.

I wanted just a taste more from the rifle than that for hogs. Our oldest son took a deer several years ago with a 158gr LSWC over a bunch of WC820. It was a doe at about 75 yards. He claims it was a one shot drop. The shot was straight on as I remember it and exited the animal. I loaded those rounds long before I had a chronograph and it's hard telling just what the velocity actually is. I do know I loaded that powder like H110/W296.

But, your observations are very astute indeed. For me, not having a homemade cast bullet in one of my firearms is certainly an odd event. We'll see how things turn out!

SC; You disappoint me...not a cast bullet in the lot! And, no handgun either?!?!?!?! I was sure that 45LC would be on your hip for sure!!!! The "piggy's" are tough in the shoulder, and penetration is the key to success! Load up some stout hardcasts, so when that "big boy" trophy tusker presents himself you wont have to wonder whether those jacketed bullets will do the deed!

Without a side arm? Not on your life! Or mine for that matter!

FT, I am not going to be handgun-less. It just isn't going to be my primary hunting firearm. Oh, don't worry, the Ruger will be there in a "gunslinger" rig and stoked with some of the 45LC loads we have spoken of before.

Me going to the "field" without a handgun just ain't gonna happen. :)

Where are you going hunting in Oklahoma. I have a son in Tulsa and cousins in Oklahoma City. Would like some info.
Thank You

WLS,
Our new son in law is from Sand Springs. The hunting is going to be done just west of Oklahoma City.
I want to keep that quiet until we are done with the hunt. I expect no trouble but would hate to seem like endorsing a place then finding out it may be a bust.

When we get back, I'll post how it went either way.

very nice skip...i have a place to boar hunt in western NC...last trip down my 500 mag.took a 4 horn ram...going to pick the mount up this weekend if the weather holds up

Pictures Kenny, pictures! ;)

FT, I kind of guessed that! ;)

No pictures Skip, but the neighbor was telling me today of a couple of hog encounters. They have been rooting his hay meadow and have about destroyed it. So, he got the necessary equipment needed for some snares. They're 1/8" steel cable anchored to something like a tree. They found one that had been broken, like cable broken, and the 4" tree it was anchored to had been partially uprooted!

The one that didn't break the snare was there this morning and went about 250#. His Win M100 in .243 did him in. :)

Getting exited! One week to go! How in the world am I supposed to concentrate at work?

Like a school boy waiting on summer vacation!

My wife made a new hunting outfit. Here is a picture of part of it. It took two pairs of USMC digital camo trousers to make it. I bet there isn't another one like it in the whole USA! Cargo pockets, reinforced rump and knees. It even has the little Eagle, Globe and Anchor and "USMC" in the print! Cool!

Well, its not exactly summer here, but the Oklahoma weather is getting back toward winter average. (Upper 20's and 40's lo/hi; sunny days in 50s)

Hopefully it won't be snowing when we come. We have enough of that here! ;)

Strange winter.

Going to stop in Neosho, Missouri and see the daughter and son in law for the weekend then Monday on to the hunting ranch.

Gonna take her to the range tonight to launch a few projectiles downrange so she can get the feel of the gun. She doesn't shoot as much as I do and this will be good for her.

Even if it is a might chilly right now!
;)

Good luck on your hog/sheep safari!!
We have been using the 357 marlin and 158 grain XTP for hogs and wounded deer for several seasons with good results at the short ranges normally encountered(<50 yds).
The 180 gr. XTP or Nosler Partition backed by 15 grains of Lil'gun provides a bit more hammer and might be preferred in the event you ran into a larger than normal hog. Just a thought. I've loaded a few of these and accuracy is on a par with the 158's. Velocity around 1600 as I recall. Haven't had an opportunity to test them on a 300# hog.
