At lunch today my wife asked for the combination to the gun safe!

Wow. Four pages of comments in 6 hours.

This post was in jest. Thanks for your concern, but some of you guys who really got serious may need to lighten up.

My wife wanted to know because she has stuff in the safe too.

This is the greatest forum. I have learned so much about S&W firearms, and bought one from a forum member. I've laughed at funny stuff and been sad for those who have met misfortune. I've read posts from friends I'll never meet.

Glad I read all the way to the end. Doesn't make much difference in my response. I believe this would be viewed by the females as a "trust issue". (input welcome) As such, and as noted by others, one could be fairly screwed. The poster who proposed defining the issue as a safety issue is a genius. Further, if she has something inside, perhaps buying the significant other their own storage device which they can have exclusive control over would be a good counter offer.

FWIW, the combo to my safe is remotely held. Everyone else is SOL.

On a serious note, someone in the family should be able to access the safe and have knowledge of your firearms.
A business owner in San Antonio died last week, swept away in the car when he crossed a low water crossing. They found the car with him in it, drowned. Fellow drove the same way home for 20 years, no barrier on one side of the low water crossing site, but the other county on opposite side had put one up. Sad situation for sure.

plan a middle of the night recon mission and transport any unauthorised refugees to a safe haven till the storm blows over.

Here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, the only people who can have access to your safe are those who have an LTC.

In my case, that includes the wife, but hey... we've been together forty years. If we don't trust each other by now, we're both screwed.

Facts are facts. If you read my early post, I reported getting wiped out by my ex wife. When I married my new wife I also gave her the combo. Anybody else would say that is proof positive, and I shouldnt have. I trusted the 1st wife as I do this one. I dont know how to explain that!
Statistics tell us that over half of marrages end up in divorice. I guess not one of us thinks that applys to us when we marry.
The smart thing to do is have a potential wife sign a affidaveit of who owned what prior to marrage, yet none of us do it, or probley think it would squrrile the deal, and it probley would!
My best advice is to take pictures and keep receipts of what you have prior to marrage. Personaly, I doubt I have 1 receipt out of 20!
In my case, I owned EVERY one of those guns that I posted prior to marrage! Yet I lost every one of them and more.
There were reasons for that. First, my ex was far smarter than the average woman. She knew guns and handeled my tables at gun shows, while I would work a lot of ot at the job. After all, I got double time on sundays! The next reason she got away with it was after I somewhat cooled off, I didnt relist them stolen as I couldnt bring myself to have my daughters mother jailed. Really, how many men would?

My ex got in the safe and recorded the model #'s and serial #'s. Had a price on them and used them in divorce court. "Bad Word"

Well, that's what happens when you yell movie in a crowded fire house. somebody is going to start the projector.

Or how to sing "Stand by your man" while taking him to " D I V O R C E" court by TW. "Maybe Standby your divorce"

I'll jump in, too. Even though this was posted in jest, it has led to an interesting discussion.
No. 39 is coming up this June. Everything we have is marital. When we got married we owned our clothes and a radio. I don't wear 29X29 jeans anymore (married a German/Norwegian girl from Wisconsin) and the radio quit when I couldn't get tubes for it any more (I bought it at Goodwill for $1 and used it for 10 years).
As far as trust, since I'm on the road so much I long ago gave my wife a power of attorney. I told my brother the lawyer (several of those) to draw it up so she could sell me into indentured servitude if she wanted. He did a proper job of that.
Long story short, as important as the subject of firearms is to me, if the house caught fire the last thing I would worry about would be some well machined steel, pretty wood, and utilitarian pieces of rubber.

Did she want the combo to all of them, or just one or two? I think I would strike a deal and give her a couple, and keep the rest for yourself. So far I have not had that problem.

When I represent the wife in a divorce one of my standing rules is to get as much money and as many toys as possible as quickly as possible in HER possession. You can always give them back at a later date, but in my experience negotiation is much easier when your side is the "keeper of the goodies". When i represent the Husband, my standing order is to get your stuff out of there ASAP before she can get it. Sorry, but that's the first thing that poped into my mind when I read your post-I hope it isn't the case and there's comething else there-I truly do.

I won't, and never have, lived my life prepared for divorce. My wife has had power of attorney for the +25 years we have been married. I'll certainly trust her with the contents of our safes.

I find the lack of trust and honesty here to be very sad and troubling.
If you cant/wont trust these people... why would you have them in your life?
My wife has access to everything I own... as I do with hers.

I can now see why the divorce rate is so high.

Jim

Certainly. If you don't trust her with the safe, DO NOT marry her.

I never have seen the humor in these posts about hiding things from, or lying to, one's wife.

Linda knows every gun I own, has been with me to buy most of them. Knows the combo to the safe but no matter how hard she tries she can't master the right, left, right thing. Give it to her unless you really think she has ill intent. Larry
