M&P 15-22 Broke After 6 Rounds

They should have "taken care" of the problems before they released the gun...... You mean to tell me they never had any of these problems when they did testing on the prototype?.... I think they did.

I think you are right. To believe otherwise would to be to conclude that S&W has little quality control and is clueless about their shipped product. But... who knows.

One thing we know for sure.... S&W is firm about there being "No issues" with the M&P 15-22. That should be comforting enough for all owners. ;)

Would all the Ruger employees please raise their hands? :D

Hi All,
First of all I am not on here trying to run down any product..However I must say I have a GSG-5 and just purchased a MP 15-22...I have had a lot of fun with the GSG...the SW 15-22 jams all the time...tried 2 differant ammo,s....Just not happy with the gun....

THE 15-22 is JUNKKKK...If it dont work dont sell it!!!

So how much for yours. Time to move on to another firearm.

My Spikes Tactical upper runs without a hitch and is very well made. It's fun, but I'm not sure it's that fun. I still like my Ruger 10-22 and Winchester 9422's. And I think there is a host of vintage 22's I'd rather have than my conversion also.......hard to please I guess.

My experience was very similar to your own. I held a GSG-5, and I was impressed with it's build quality and attention to detail. Then I learned it is made of pot metal. :( From my experience with that material, I knew that all it would take, is one good drop on some rocks, and it would crack.

I agree about polymer. I understand the concerns of some about it. But I also have experience with that material, and I know first hand how durable and sturdy it is. The same stuff is used in commercial jet aircraft construction, and I wont scare the others by mentioning how extensively and where. Lets just say, it is very tough stuff, and I trust it.

I agree with you about the great functionality also. The 15-22 is definitely more than just cosmetics.
I was interested in the GSG until I read the polymer it uses is ABS and not glass-filled nylon/Zytel. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that, and I suppose it would be easier to glue back together, but...no thanks.

I don't know why the handguard on the SR-22 would be more versatile than the integral quad-rail on the 15-22. Way more than enough rail space to hang junk off of, not that I'm likely to.

I think you are right about the polymer used in our 15-22s. It looks and feels exactly like the stuff my Kel-Tec is made of, and that is definitely glass filled Zytel. I agree about the quad-rail. These guns are an accessory freak's dream come true.

Like you I like simplicity and function. I am going to keep it simple.

Ahhhh.... c'mon guy. It's one thing to post specific issues that are less than praiseworthy (and a little humor at the expense of S&W) which I have offered my fair share, but it's it's quite another to simply hurl disparages.

yeah, isnt that the truth, if your not even gonna give s&w the chanse to fix your gun, thats your own fault. Otherwise, get rid of it, and move on to another rifle and forum.

Well said, TxShooter. Hopefully, this forum will not continue with it's current tone of calling the rifle "junk", and referring to people and their postings as "foolish" "irresponsible" and "mentally unstable". Really no need for all that.

Back for the second time

So as you're aware, I sent my 15-22 back to the factory for the second time. Just got it back this week.

I called S&W week before last and asked for Kate as advised on this BB. Turns out you can't get Kate to call you back, if you even reach her. I left a VM and received a call the next day from one of the two Paul's that work in CS. I explained why I was calling Kate and that I understood she was the supervisor. He said she was but that he was most familiar with long guns, most everyone else was pistols. Anyway, after telling him to keep the gun until it was fixed (even if it took 3 months), he promised he would go put 300 rounds through it when it was 'repaired'.

So the next week I got a call from someone (Mark maybe??) who said he was in CS and that the gunsmith had taken the gun out of the box and put 100 rounds through it without a jam! I explained that I found that hard to believe since every clip I had put through it jammed and misfired. I also explained that out of around 200-300 rounds, over 30 had FTFs and one out of battery. 85% of those were misfires, and 15% were failure to feed. So he said he would talk to the gunsmith about it.

Next day, it's being shipped out. I received it this week (with two mags) and the resolution description that said, "Updated to current specs" the first time, now said "Replaced bolt". Took it out today and put 303 rounds through it with only one misfire. This I can live with!

Turns out this is a pretty fun gun if you have one that works properly! Now just trying to figure out how to make the flash hider and adapter stay on the barrel, since it shakes loose with every clip. Tried some thread locker and that seems to hold it for around 300 rounds.

Oh well, this gives me something to play with and actually keep the gun in my hands rather than at the factory!!

Glad it worked out for you Jester, I am sorry that you had to go through this whole series of events twice.

So after two weeks at the factory, I received my 15-22 back from S&W on Tuesday (with an extra mag). If you recall, the first time out it sheared the feed ramp off after 6 rounds.

Well, I took it to the range today with just about every .22 brand made (except Remington, since everything I've read says it doesn't like it). And so the moment of truth arrived. First clip, 2 FTF's. Second clip, 1 FTF, etc. Pretty much every clip had at least one failure to either fire or feed. This included, Federal, CCI and Winchester. And it was out of four different mags.

Then it really got interesting. Mags of Federal, and Winchester would not fire after the initial round. Second round feed properly, but would not fire. Mags of CCI were fine. Mix the Federal and Winchester in with CCI and they were fine. Fire an entire mag of CCI and you could fire an entire mag of Fed. or Rem. But after that, it was back to failure to fire for the Federal or Remington.

The last straw was an out of battery round (Federal I think). I guess it's back to S&W yet again! Man I wish I had never bought this gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't own this gun, just reading this thread...How did you pay for this gun, credit card or cash? If its credit card, just call the card company and complain that you were sold a bad product and they won't make it good...I know Visa will help you with the merchant and the merchant doesn't want to get to cross with them..If you bought it with an American Express Card it actually extends the warranty...Just a thought

M&P broke after 12 rounds..

I bought one of the 15-22's last Wednesday. Using a box of the Winchester 40 g hp's given to me by my dealer when I bought the rifle, the first 4 or 5 fed normally. Then I decided to see how it would rapid fire. After about the 6th or 7th round of that, I heard a big "pow" . Looking into the feed, there was a case, still chambered, that had not fully entered battery and had exploded, almost completely severed from it's rim. When it did this, the whole ejector apparently blew off the bolt. I haven't been able to find it. There was a firing pin strike mark on the ruptured case. I have no idea whether the ejector was defective, not properly secured, or collateral damage from the explosion caused by some other problem.
Everyone I asked said to buy the Smith. I love the way it feels and looks. I wouldn't be so disappointed if it wasn't a weapon that feels really good in your hands.
I did notice that the rounds are easy to load into the magazine wrong as some others have noted. That was quite apparent and easy to avoid, although it was an aggravation. I'm willing to give Smith the benefit of a doubt at this point and will see how it does when it comes back.

Yeah, you aren't the first that's had that happen, but Smith will make it good and maybe even send you a couple new magazines to boot.

No free magazines or anything. I got it back after about 3 weeks. S&W replaced the magazine(which was brand new??), the extractor, and some mysterious springs according to the terse note sent back with it.
All in all not a good explanation for repair of blowing the extractor out of a brand new rifle.
Anyway I have put about 100 rounds through it and it has worked flawlessly. The only problem I have had is the one noted in the forum about paying careful attention to the loading of the 30 round magazine. That is a little bit of a nuisance and a little tedious for doing in 30 degree weather with aging, ungloved hands.
It is probably one of the most fun weapons that I have. I really enjoyed shooting it since I picked it back up.

Glad you got your 15-22 back. Sounds like they replaced the bolt and trigger springs. Take a peek and see if they aren't blue in color now.

As far as loading mags in the cold, I bought extra mags and load them up at home so I don't have to do that at the range. But transporting loaded mags may be illegal in some areas.

The 15-22 has ALAB! :p.... and speaking of... I kinda miss ALAB on the Black Dog mags.
