So what does everybody think of the Toyota recall?

Once again, if these cars affected go back like 3 to 5 years, why has all this just come to light in the last month? I am hearing of about 3 new cases every day senselised on tv. Why just in the last week or two? If 2 or 3 cars a day are takeing off uncontrollably, why didnt they a year ago? Why werent they featured on tv then? Something here just doesnt smell right.
It seems things run in cycles. Remember all the freeway shootings we heard about daily?
Then it was all the day care child abuse, new cases daily.
For awhile it was all the atm user robberys daily. It seems things go in fads for months at a time, then kind of die out!
It seems the news focus`s on a new crime or something like these recalls, everybody gets on the bandwagon for awhile with new, like cases every day, then you hear nothing untill the next fad.

toyota recall

Get your hands on a TOYOTA and go roaring down the road OUT OF CONTROL at 90 miles an hour.
Toyota does not stand behind their engine replacements and other extensive work.

Don't just buy American...

Buy used American, preferably before 1975. :)
However, I did look at a 1984 Volvo awhile back. ;)

Prewar is better, but the Mrs. likes air conditioning, heat and automatic transmissions.

I sincerely believe a good driver, an aware driver would be able to circumvent any WOT situation in any modern car or truck. Can we say driver unawareness. We all need to think like airplane drivers. Engine failure, what do I do type stuff. Just the simple stuff like defensive driving. Someone pulls in front of me, what do I do, where do I steer. My power will not shut down. What do I do? Like how do I disconnect, kill the power? Think ahead drivers, think ahead.
JMO,
oldogy, who drives a Jeep with mechanical throttle, a MH with mechanical throttle and a Ford F150 that is DBW. BTW, all three of them will kick into neutral with the engine running and going down the road. And the brakes on all three of them will overpower the engine.

I think the most unbelievable part is this latest guy was doing 94 MPH in a PRIUS!!!!! For Pete's sake, it's one of those stupid "green" cars.
Anyway, I've had my carburetor (you can tell that was a long time ago) ice up and give me cruise control the car wasn't equipped with on the interstate. I just threw out the clutch (another advantage), shut off the car, slowed down, put it back in gear, popped the clutch and "roll started" it when I was at the desired speed. By the way, this was in Iowa in the dead of winter on snow and ice covered roads. I was about 22 years old at the time, but I knew how to drive. Anybody who doesn't know enough to just tap the stupid thing into neutral shouldn't be on the road.

Without getting into the engineering which I have done before I can safely make a big prediction:

Many plaintiff/tort lawyers will get very rich and contribute to H. Waxman’s reelection fund. The feds will pass many more regulations and hire more lawyers. The media will find some other cause de jure.

Meanwhile somewhere automotive engineer(s) will solve the problem if there really is a problem.

I think part of this is the hype Obama's federal agencies and congress are adding in an attempt to help out Government Motors.

Bingo!! If the .gov would get their noses out of it, and if Ray TheHood would shut up, Toyota could take care of business. But they can't control Toyota through the means they used to control GM and Chrysler, so they're doing it this way.

In the incident involving the Prius yesterday, the repot I heard stated that the driver put the car into neutral and it still accelerated. I have never driven a Prius, but don't they have a transmission similar to a conventional car? I call BS!

my thoughts exactly, plus they should have went to neutral and pulled the key out of the damn car, if they couldn't do it in neutral then park is still an option, the car is messed up anyway

Count me in the camp with "gregintenn" and "Crazy K38."

I'm calling BS on this. I think it is a lack of driving ability and problem solving.

I think these "drivers" are embarrassed by the fact that they panicked and were too stupid to think of something as simple as "put it in neutral" or "turn off the key" or "STAND on the brakes." When asked, "Why didn't you just...?" they claim they did and the car STILL wouldn't stop. Utter nonsense.

I wouldn't sit in the passenger seat of any make vehicle with one of these wizards behind the steering wheel.

I know if I owned a Toyota product, I'd be installing a master kill switch on the dash. I've had two boats and a tractor with them installed, and they are 100% effective.

I hope the lesson learned by all, not just Toyota, no matter how good you are, you have got to take care of business and cannot rest on what was good enough yesterday.

I have applied this in my own situations and find it to be helpful. Not easy, but helpful.

I still say this reminds me of the Audi "sudden acceleration" problem of the mid '80s. Turned out people thought they were on the brakes, but they missed and were on the gas instead.

I was just listening to the radio this morning, they reported another case of sudden acceleration with a Prius. When they got the car stopped, they claimed the brake pads were almost completely burned up.

I call BS. There isn't a production car made that has a strong enough motor to overpower the brakes, and especially not a Prius. There may have been an isolated problem, and because Toyota was eating Government Motors lunch, the vultures are circling.

your also talking about a new drive train technology.
In a pure honest piston engine driven machine it can happen at builds of over 500 HP ... ive done it, Ferrari had the ability to overpower the brakes in the F50 as well, probably others too.
the thing is due to the nature of how a four stroke cycle engine does its thing, each cylinder only adds about 7% to the duty cycle give or take a little. its a series of pulses. Electric drive starts at 80% duty cycle and produces something more like a sine wave power stream that never hits 0 like a piston engine does. Power requirements to overun the brakes will be lower in these cases. add too that the cut rate crap they use in tree hugger cars and it get real believable

I just "tested" my 2006 Prius. It shifts into neutral just fine while driving and accelerating. However, I could not shut it off, but I have mine set up for "keyless" access. My key is in my pocket and the car recognizes me when I approach it.
All I have to do is get in and press the "Start" button. To turn it off, it has to be sitting still, press the "Park" button and then the power button. (I wasn't brave enough to push the "Park" button while moving.;))
I don't know, were it set up to use the electronic key in the "keyhole", if it would shut off by pulling the key.

Every incident of unexpected acceleration is not just B.S.
I do not own a Lexus E350. However, EVERY car, tractor, ATV, motorcycle, truck, boat, lawn mower, etc I've ever owned or used would cease to accelerate when the transmission was put into neutral. I'm not saying there isn't a problem, I'm saying the news is not reporting facts, the government is WAAAAAAAY too anxious to jump on it, and has enough at stake to make the whole ordeal smell like a rat.

My wife’s Camry Hybrid has a kind of keyless system along with the Prius. I was talking with some friends about it not shutting down and was told if you hold the button in for 3 seconds it will shut down, even in drive.

If the car is having a major malfunction who knows what will work. I do think all Toyota’s will go into neutral from drive at any time you push the stick.

I have a 4 Toyota family. 07 Tundra, 07 Camry Hybrid, 09 Camry & the tree hugger delight 09 Prius.
