Caj, I agree with you on most things ..........but here I have to disagree. Her first amendment rights are still there. She was not arrested or fined. She exercised her freedom of speach and simply caught "flak" for it ..........and she finally retired (at what is it..age 89 or something like that). Personally, I wish a lot more of the liberal media would retire.

I absolutely do not agree with what she said. I agree she can say it and she did. She also apologized before she retired in an attempt to maintain her job. If you say it, stand by it, or shut up. This old bat never shut up.

Same thing happened to the "whack-oh" professor at the Univ. of Colorado that made statements after 9/11 about the deaths being justified or something like that. He lost his job, but was not fined or arrested...............point is an employer should have the right to fire an employee if that employee's actions/words are detrimental to the employer's business. Both the professor and Helen Thomas have the right to speak their mind but they should be aware of the "private" consequences.......if they are not, they should have been!!!

She is free to tell Jews to get out of Israel, others are free to express that she should get out of the newsroom. She held a position of being in the public eye (very hard on the eyes) How the public perceives her is a critical factor in maintaining her position.
She is free to start her own blog and babble anything she wishes. Her employer nor anyone else is required to provide a platform. Kinda sorta like this Forum... Helen of Trolls are dispatched.

Helen Thomas hasn't been of sound mind for quite some time, judging from her more recent questions at press conferences. People should take pity on her or at least admire her for still being able to get around in public, more or less. No one should be taking seriously anything she babbles about.
Freedom of speech does NOT mean speech without consequences. All it means is that the government is supposed to stay off your back for opinions you state. If you are foolish enough to believe that you are free to say whatever you want, then go tell your boss to "go ***** himself" and see what happens.

If someone in the government had acted against her freedom of speech I would be concerned, since even her offensive political speech is protected against government interference, but "We the People" have an equal right to be offended by her exercise of her right to free speech.
I believe that rights also carry responsibilities. Among these responsibilities is accepting the reasonable consequences of exercising that right if that exercise infringes on the rights of others. I don't believe government has rights – responsibilities and authorities yes, but not rights. I don't believe it was unreasonable for her to "retire" from her employment because her speech offended many others outside of the government.
Her employer also has rights, such allowing her to "retire" if her exercise of her right to free speech offends the employer's clients or their associates; that is it risked harm to or harmed the employer.

NOT full-force. They'll only "get around to you" if you happen to say something THEY don't like.
For 8-years, all I heard was how stupid George Bush was (we're still getting it from Paul McCartney and his ilk), but now we're told we have to ease up on old BO because criticizing him isn't good for the country.
The phrase "Give me a break" comes to mind, but I don't particularly care for any favors from these types.
I don't agree that reporters have any particular "right" to use their positions to express ANY personal opinions about anything - no matter what it costs them. They are supposed to report news, not try to fabricate it. They can keep their opinions to themselves and just deliver the facts as expertly as they can.

A few years ago, I happened to get to talk to a full bird Air Force colonel as we both waited for a flight. We got to talking about the state of the nation and the 2nd amendment, etc. I remarked that it seemed as if so many rights are in jeopardy.
His answer to me is something I'll never forget:

I dont think the slippery slope is anything new.
just say you'd like to assassinate a political figure and see what happens.
Nothing forbids us from saying it ... but nothing forbids it from being acted upon either.
Her parents are Lebanese, I suppose her sentiments come naturally.
