New M&P 40 owner

After much research and anticipation I bought a new M&P 40 last night for what I would consider a reasonably good price. I paid $479.95 OTD at our local Big "R" store. I don't know if they are a national chain or not but I have seen them at several locations in Indiana. The only negative aspect to my new purchase is that I had to sell my Sigma 40 to afford it. I know there are a lot of people that don't see any upside to the Sigma but I was actually quite pleased with the weapon. I never did any trigger modifications but a lot of dry firing and only 600 rounds at the range yet the trigger pull was measured at a little more than 8 lbs. Now, after shooting the Sigma and becoming well acquainted with the trigger the M&P is a world apart. Getting it home and cleaning the factory lubrication off re lubricating, I dry fired it several times and became a little concerned with the pre travel of the M&P trigger. The break is crisp and clean and the reset appears short and smooth. My question to those that are more familar with the M&P, is the pre travel of the trigger something that is I should be concerned with or is this normal for this model. It is not terrible just terribly different to what I am used to.

Yes, pre-travel on the M&P is the norm. I've gotten used to in on my M&P 9c.

That's a great price. I think you'll like your new gun. Try Apex Tactical parts to improve your trigger if need be.

I haven't thought too much about any mods yet seeing that I haven't even been to the range to fire it. I am hoping that it breaks in as nicely as the Sigma did. I will make it out tomorrow to begin learning the weapon. I don't think it would fair to judge how the firearm handles until I have reached the break in point. I assume after a few hundred rounds I will begin to see how it performs. I also recently bought a little Ruger LCP and that little pocket rocket was/is something that I will need to spend time with. The trigger on that weapon is long and hard. I have only fired less than a hundred rounds through it so I know I haven't reached the break in point yet. I am thoroughly excited about the M&P though. Like most I think on this forum, I really enjoy range time.

That is a fantastic price if new. I think the going rate is usually $550 to $575

I believe you'll find that "breaking in" your new gun will also be commensurate with breaking in the "shooter", i.e. you. As you are getting accustomed to firing your new pistol, you will become more used to the trigger characteristics, recoil, sights, different makes of ammo, etc. It's a subtle, yet natural process. So, while you might think or feel that your pistol is "breaking in", it is more likely you who is being broken in.

That is an interesting way of looking at it, I can see myself adapting to the pistol as I become more acquainted to it. The price I thought was too good to pass up, it is new. Big "R" sells all major brands a lot lower in price than most places. Well, I guess I can't say that because I have never shopped the Academy or Bud,s or any other online stores. I have just looked at Dunhams, Big R, and a few local shops in Marion, here in Indiana.

I have ordered an M&P .40c today. Price $529.00, plus the $50.00 rebate for military. I did a lot of homework before choosing this gun and the caliber. I carried a Beretta M9 for many years and shoot competition with a 1911. When I started testing Polymer pistols, I decided on the .40SW round. Many departments and agencies have switched to .40 including the USCG. I like the ballistics better than the 9mm, and the capacity beats the .45. Also, the plymer guns have much more recoil with the .45 than I am used to. I guess I was spoiled with the steel 1911.
I hope I have made the right choice.

I'm an owner of the full sized M&P 9mm pistol. It did not take more than a dozen shots to become quite comfortable with the pistol, including the trigger pull.

You will likely pull a little low and to the left until you catch on to the feel of this natural pointing platform.

The Glock and Springfield triggers always bit my finger in recoil, but the Smith does not do that at all. In fact nothing about shooting the gun is distracting. That's a sign of good design, I believe.
