I had originally posted about creating a long range version of my rifle, but I've recently found a local smith that can thread my barrel so I plan to go the more common route for a carbine and maybe save the long-range plans for a COLT SPR M-16 in 22 (fixed stock, quad rail and rifle length barrel. I know they aren't well liked, but it is better suited to my plan and barrel is already 1/2 x 28).

Now my question is still basically the same. What is the best source for a replacement stock for our little guns? I've seen a lot of magpul products used, but I'm not sure I can justify 100 dollars just because a stock looks better. Do any of the usual replacement stocks offer any extra length or a better cheek rest as these are both areas I feel need improvement on the 15-22 and would then justify the money?

Also, is anyone running a barrel shroud along with a fake suppressor or is it mostly a one or the other type deal? I've looked at the picture thread but I can't remember seeing any and I don't have time to go back through all 140 pages right now.

Current mods are 3.5 pound springs and polished surfaces(to be installed later this weekend) Pro-mag Vertical grip, too tall riser (to be swapped out for Tapco or other 3/4" riser when funds allow) and 30mm bushnell trophy reddot yet to be sighted in. And 2 extra mags. Will post pics when I can beg/borrow use of a camera or post from cell as last ditch effort.

It basically comes down to what "You" want to add to it.
I see a lot of people that have the same amount in money the gun cost in cool add ons.
I have a scope and a Bipod and can enjoy shooting it for hours.

Check out the classifieds at the top of the page as a sticky... there is a few pics of stuff I make... but ill make whatever you want if your looking for a specific look

anybody....

belt fed, had planned on coming to you for some type of shroud/fake suppressor once barrel is threaded. I'm just trying to decide between the varmint and integrally silenced looks you offer.

As far as the stock, I'm really only looking to replace it with something that has a better cheek position and maybe adds a little length overall (long arms make carbine stocks kind of uncomfortable, why my 10/22 sits in the case more than anyother).

Also, I'm assuming any accessories I buy for the rifle will be transferrable to a 15-22P if I should decide one of those is necessary in the future.

James.

For the most part yes.. as long as you don't swap the uppers on the 2 your golden... unless you have the approved form 1 of coarse

was thinking more like optics, grips, shrouds, etc. I'm not registered for SBR, but it does look like it would be a cool little toy with front grip, red dot and side folding hk style stock ala MP5. Would be especially fun in select-fire or full auto. Maybe even a fat shroud for the integrally silenced look.

James, I highly recommend the Vltor E-mod stock. I run one on my 15-22 & love it. It replaced the Magpul CTR stock that I had installed. It has a very good cheek weld ( especially if you run optics) & it is about 1" longer than a standard collapsable stock. It also has standard sling slots & QD mounts on it.

Not to mention the door breecher muzzel tamer

The Magpul ACS also gives more length and a better cheek weld for the same price as the Emod, but with a 'cleaner' look. Here is mine with an airsoft Emod and my brother's, with an ACS.

Shawn, does either stock provide more length than the other. I like the acs, but I'm not sure I want to spend that much to get one. I'll have to check the local airsoft places to see what kind of stocks they have before I decide though, as your EMOD definitely looks like it would fit what I'm looking for. also is that a true ACS or an airsoft version. If airsoft could you tell me where he got it. I'm thinking that might be the way to go (they seem to run around $35 on flea-bay).

Is anyone using a buttpad to gain extra length on their carbine stocks. I've seen a few (utg, tapco, etc) in the $10 range and that seems about right for what it is, just didn't know if there were any preferred brands or things to stay away from.

Thanks, James.

Do you really need a stock extension? I'm 6' with long arms and I use the collapsible stock at 2-3 clicks in from full length for both bench shooting and carbine-style shooting. Unless you're a really big guy shooting traditional rifle I don't see how length is a big issue.

Once I trade out stocks for something with a better cheek weld I may not need the extra length, but I'm currently shooting at the full extended position on my carbine stock and looking for a little more length. I am beginning to wonder what the proper technique is for shooting ar's though. I've heard somewhere your supposed to be as close to the rear sight as possible (nose almost touching carry handle), but that has never seemed like a comfortable style to me. I understood it to be to use the stock at full extension always, unless you need to shorten rifle to account for heavy clothes/body armor, etc. Am I missing something?

Carbines aren't shot like traditional rifles. The easiest way I learned was to stand square to the target, put the butt in the pocket making sure it's not above your shoulder at all, and curl forward to meet your cheek to the stock. Your support hand should be out as far as comfortable and high on any grip you're using to get as close to the barrel as possible to better control the muzzle and recoil. This doesn't work well for slow, aimed shots, but is great for fast firing, moving, and transitioning between multiple targets.

If you're shooting like that then putting your nose within a few inches of the charging handle makes sense. You're keeping the mass of the rifle closer to your body for better control and being as compact as possible.

Ok that technique makes sense for rapid fire and tactical carbine use, but I mainly bought this as a fun plinker. It would be a nice backup/trainer if I ever get a real AR, but I think if I did it would probably be more along the lines of a 308 extended range target model than a carbine. I've got pistol/shotgun for anything inside 50yards and the rifle's mainly for longer work.

Still, it's something I might try with a few mags of ammo next time I'm at the range. Rustpot, does a sling make any kind of improvement for the type of shooting you're talking about?

Slow, I've looked at one of those saddles and was considering it heavily, but no one seems to have one in black. I might be convinced to try the green (live in the midwest, so that could be passibly useful/easily explained), but the desert tan makes it seem (to me) like I'm trying to play soldier and I just don't want to be that guy. That's why I was leaning toward a replacement stock, plus $30 for the saddle, $10 for the pad, another $10 for a sling swivel and I've got the price of a Magpul MOE which comes with everything above and is a better looking stock in my opinion. Though, $130 for the ACS makes the saddle seem like a deal. This is why I try to handle things before I buy them; cuts down on the buyers remorse later.

Like I said it's great for shooting on the move, engaging multiple targets in a game setting, etc. It's not that you can't make a 300 yard shot from a position like this, just that you'd be better served going with a more stable hold. Man sized targets with an AR out to 200 yards aren't much of a problem though, you just don't want to be doing it for very long.

Slings serve 2 purposes - to hold the gun when your hands can't, and to shore up the support forearm to take the movement out of the wrist and stabilize/immobilize that arm. So since you want to move, react, bend and twist to shoot from barriers, in prone position, use a pistol, the second function I mentioned isn't applicable and someone using this may opt for a 1-point sling so they can "drop" the weapon to transition to a pistol or manipulate something and have a second contact point when moving and having only one hand on the weapon.

A more traditional (2 or 3-point) sling would be used in the same way but allows the gun to be slung around to the back to free both hands and will allow the sling to still be used to wrap the support forearm.

A lot of people use a .223 carbine for a lot more than long range engagement now. An HP .223 round will penetrate less than a 9mm through interior walls, can easily accept lights and optics for night use, and is generally a lot faster and more accurate to put shots on target than a pistol every time. The only major downsides for in-home use are the bigger package and the louder noise.

Wolfe, both stocks offer about the same length. The ACS is a genuine Magpul. A friend had an extra and let me have it for $100. Couldn't pass it up. Magpul makes a butt pad for their stocks that adds about 3/4" for around $20. Also, the MOE only comes with a thin pad and no sling swivel. There' are slots you could put your sling through, but nowhere to mount a swivel. The airsoft EMOD sling swivel sockets don't fit a standard sling swivel. My next mod will be seeing if I can adapt the rifle to work with the Magpul UBR stock. I have to decide whether I'm willing to spend $250 on a stock and render the receiver extension tube unusable with normal stocks.

I'd love to have either a UBR or the Sniper Stock, but I realize neither is a direct fit for my carbine tube. I may try an airsoft or PST Magpul ACS as I've found them for as low as $35 and I won't feel too bad if its not all that I expect it to be.

Does anyone know if PTS/PST is a branch of Magpul or do they just make really good knock-offs (down to the two tone cardboard box it's shipped in)?

James.

PTS is a real branch of Magpul. Their stuff is made in HK, not America. Even the real PTS stuff is a little expensive. Where an ACS is $125, a PTS ACS is around $100. If you are seeing PTS stocks for $35, either they are MOEs or they are fakes.

An UBR or PRS stock would require significant modification of the receiver extension tube. The rib on the bottom would have to be removed and the overall diameter would have to be reduced slightly as the entry tube for the UBR and PRS is a little smaller than mil-spec. Then, the receiver extension would have to be cut down in length and a threaded insert installed in the end of it. Finally, a shallow 1/2" hole would have to be drilled in the back bottom of the lower receiver so that the stock could be prevented from rotating.

I might try it or I might just order a CMMG 22LR AR and mount an UBR on it.
