Wow, very cool! I didn't know these were being released. I'll definitely look it up when I hey home from trip.

Anyone handled one of these yet?

Permanent carry handle, fixed stock, no-go for me. Although the 18-inch barrel should make it more accurate.

should be a better option for those who just want a gun to look cool and arent worried about true AR ergonomics, it doesnt have a "real" upper/lower like the 15-22 but it has plenty of rails to hang everything in the world off of. : D

its basically a 702 with the shell hung around it, should be a great plinker the 702 isnt a bad gun at all.

meh... A plinkster in a polymer housing. Looks vaguely like an AR, but with none of the controls / functionality.

It's probably a good little gun to throw 22's down range (10 at a time), but it's hardly competition for an M&P (IMHO)

I was just going through black friday ads and saw this new tactical .22lr for $200 this friday.. its a brand new item too so i figure not many people know about it yet. anyway if anyone cares to discuss, lets talk about it here! i think it looks pretty cool anyway. wouldn't buy one over my 15-22 though.

Gander Mountain® > Mossberg Plinkster .22LR Tactical Semi-Auto Rifle with Fixed Stock NY/MD compliant - Firearms > Rimfire Rifles > Semi-Auto Action :

Who was selling it for $200. ?

The December 2010 issue of the American Rifleman evaluates a group of AR-15 type 22's and the Mossberg 702 comes out at the bottom of the price and accuracy pile. The S&W 15-22 had an Average Extreme Spread of 1.71" for 3 types of ammo while the 702 is 2.25," both at 50 yards. Interesting article.

Yea, saw an exerpt from that article on-line yesterday. Less accuracy along with the 'looks' of the rifle would keep it off my list, even at the lower price point.

Then again, if it's the only or best way to get a youngster introduced to the sport and it's all you can afford, the choice is simple.

And just what does barrel length have to do with accuracy??

Dennis.

what doesn't it? explain to me why you think guns are manufactured with longer barrel lengths than others? if it made no difference we could all use 6'' barrels on our super compact carbines. why put a 29'' barrel on a M82 when you could easily use a 16'' one right? :p

I love this argument.. I'm popping popcorn.. :)

.22 bullets reach max burn and velocity with a 16" barrel and the twist rate fully stabilizes the round.

A barrel that is longer is not simply better in every circumstance. If the 18" is the same thickness as the 16" it will be more subject to vibration and flex at the end. Even more so if the barrel isn't bedded right or free floated or is a narrower profile.

The Mossberg may have a different twist rate, a worse bore tolerance, a bad crown from the factory, or it may just suffer from worse harmonics and strain from the forces on the handguard.

As to the 24" barrel on the M82, that's firing a .50cal round. I'm sure with as big of a gas break as those things have there's still a substantial amount of gas pressure behind that round after 24" of travel. It's probably close to a 2" profile as well.

yeah for the .22lr that makes perfect sense, but he made a blanket statement that barrel length ≇ accuracy.

meanwhile after reading that whole article (couldn't find the accuracy comparison ), these H&K 416 D145RS sure look badass. and considering it has the H&K name i'm suprised it sells under $600. although i think its another umarex (barf) build.

I can't see any advantage to any of the rifles that "kinda sorta look" like an AR but don't function like one. For that, there is, but one choice! (well, two choices if you count adding a 22LR conversion kit to a real AR).
