Several to choose from...I noted that there is the round trigger guard and the square.

Any year better than another? And major differences in production years with respect to design changes?

I have them in the square and round trigger guards. Both are fine semis, but I find it easier to keep my finger outside of the trigger guard and away from the trigger only for safety reasons with the round guard.

It is generally easier to find holsters for the rounded trigger guard versus the squared.

I hear negative things about the extractors on these...is this a generally known and accepted issue or is it just an occasional occurence?

Thanks so far for some input...I just want a REAL metal gun for a change. I am over the "poly pistols" for awhile.

First I have heard of an extractor problem, mine's always flung brass just fine. Guessing what you have heard is an occasional occurence.

Well - I will know soon enough - I just ordered an re-furb 5906 that was made in 1996. I should get it Friday...

You can safely presume that every step in a guns evolution is either an upgrade or cost saving measure. The changes over the years with the 5906 covered both of those areas. They never made a bad or inferior 5906 and i have never heard of a particular style or model year with inherent extraction issues. That being said the BEST 5906 is the one you own and since you have one on its way, I am certain that will be the best 5906!

You'll love it.
The 3rd Generation Smiths are great pistols. I'm sure there will be more in your future. Can't stop at just one...

I don't care for the square trigger guards, see no real use for them, and consider them faddish. Round trigger guards are fine with me.

I guess the square guards are on the older models? I prefer the round and as someone stated - your choice of holsters is apparently wider.

I also ordered 3, 15 round magazines - Factory mags - for $19.95 each. I will have 5 mags for this...

Next purchase is a holster.

+1. I feel the same way with my 5903.
