I have inherited this from my father and need some information on it. Serial number S1705XX. I am curious about the estimated value for insurance purposes. faif2d

very nice gun. grips look correct, i have a 6" barrel
on mine and serial number range is 170000 so
i'm thinking it's a 4 screw. value i'd say $1500 to
$2000. does it have it's orignal box?

mine shipped in 1957....

With the condition shown, I would put $1000 on it.

Without seeing the right side of the gun, I agree...about $1K. For comparison, here is a link to a nice clean 4-screw example with a couple of issues but in better condition for $1395 shipped:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/guns-sale-trade/173225-wts-s-w-pre-29-6-5in-4in-tn-sold.html

There is a bit of muzzle wear...either from being in storage or a holster...and the finish needs some work.

The grips appear, on the left side, to be in excellent condition. The finish and the grips need a good cleaning and polish. I recommend Clenzoil for cleaning and Renaissance Wax for a polish. Hopefully it will clean up nicely.

Nice remembrance.

That's a very nice 44. Case colors on the hammer and trigger are really nice. Personally I would not mess with the metal, except for a good polishing with Simichrome and clean up the stocks. Serial number puts it at 1956-1957, I believe. Enjoy. :)

$1000? I see sellers asking that much and more for 1970s Model 29-2s. The stocks are worth $500+.

Value...

There is a well placed, high profile retailer here in New England that has a blue 4" Pre-29 in the same serial range.

While his example has the correct black case, documents and used tools, his asking price is $3000.

I have been negotiating with them for the past three months and I bet that when I finally close the deal the price will still be north of $2K.

Thanks for all the input. The mark on the barrel is a flash effect there are no marks other than very slight wear. RH side looks as good as the LH shown. I do remember my father saying that this was a very early one and valuable but I was not aware that it was worth what you all are saying. All that being said I will continue to use it as it was intended to be used as I have hopes to leave it to my son when I go.
I will be looking forward to the stocks Reddog.

They're on the way, Steve!
I can vouch for the condition of this gun! I handled it when he first got it out and it could have been unfired from the looks of it. Even the turn ring hardly showed! I imagine most of that was put on later that day. He took the picture after our shoot. I don't think he had even cleaned it yet? It's a good thing it wasn't for sale because my wife would have probably killed me after we got home!
