Was wondering the same thing... I just picked up a cheap BSA red dot from Gander Mountain on sale from $50 to $30. Clearly I'm new into the tactical weaponry, sure is fun though!

You can use a 45 degree mount to add a Red-Dot. Here's a picture:

this will allow you switch back between the two.

Yes there several ways.

Mount scope to carry handle. Mount a red dot to the top rail of handguard. This gives you use of iron sights too.

Mount a mini red dot on the tube of a scope using a separate ring mount.

Use a PEPR scope mount with a top ring mount for a mini red dot.

Use a 45 degree offset mount.

NcStar Ultimate Sighting System. (mixed results with this)

Primary Arms Compact 4x scope with mount rails.

I tried the 45 degree method this last weekend to continue my targeting skills. They teach this approach at Gunsite in their training class's. I'm not a fan of it since it's not a "natural" feel to rotate the gun, but I can see how it would work in close quarters targeting.

that's something that would work. what kind of rings are those? do you happen to remember where did you purchase it? .....

i'll give it a try w/ the 45 degree rail but like it was mentioned in one of the posts it just doesn't seem natural.

pretty much what i'm trying to do is set up scope for greater distances and red dot for close targets (25 yards or less)

thanks for the help guys. i think i've found what i'm looking for

I know what you mean it just feels wrong and I have decided to use either scope, or red dot but not together. Mounting red dot on top of scope is doesnt work as my cheek wants to rest on the stock and the 45 degree thing just messes me up.

Ranger I am sure you are a far better shot than I, but I could not have a setup like this in a competitive tactical situation as my natural urge is to rest my cheek on the stock and to use the red dot in that setup you have to raise your head.

I am planning on getting comfortable with the 45 degrees - until then plinking at the range 50+ yrds I use a scope, less than that and in competative tactical situtions where ranges are less than 20yds and in some cases 10yds I just use the red dot.

Would love not to have to do this as re-sighting is a PITA.

also how hard is it to use red dot on top of the scope? i got my scope today but still waiting for the rings ......

is it hard to sight in the red dot on the 45 degree mount?

Mine was easy. I had it zero'd in 7 rounds. I saw similar 45 degree set ups on the SWAT guys guns today at the range. They used either Ecotechs, Delta points or Insight MRDS on 45 degree mounts. Some guys tested with iron sights set up too. The call it CBS or Canted Back-up Sights for iron sight usage. I've heard other people call it RTS or Rapid Transition Sights.

The Range Officer gave me a break down of why they use this system while the guys were running drills. He said that if you are shooting a known distance range here no movement is required you optical sight is all you need. The RTS combined with an optic allows the shooter quick assessment of near threats using the RTS, then transition to optics for distant threats. The sniper guys like to use this in reverse by addressing the distant threat with the optics then transitioning to the near threat with the sights.
