Second IDPA match today

Really screwed the pooch on the first stage (two targets with no hits) and did some other really inept stuff. But still no procedurals.

Even though I thought I did worse I finished 48th out of 51. Total time 349.71 with 109 points down.

The only other SSR shooter who is a Sharpshooter was 31st overall. 235.80 total time with 65 points down.

Overall winner is a SSP Master. 120.03 total time with 36 points down.

So I did manage a slight improvement. Last time I was next to last.

Don't obsess about the time. Concentrate on shooting a clean match with no points down. When I shoot my revolvers I like to beat as many auto shooters as possible, but "Most Accurate Shooter" is always an attention getter, even if you finish toward the bottom as a new shooter. And 36 points down is a lot for an SSP Master, even if it was a tough match. Don't think that you need to be just as fast to sacrifice so much in accuracy.

Work on getting your hits and with more experience, you'll find that you will get a little faster each time.

Dryfire and reloading practice will help a lot.

I would add another thing to RH45's practice list. Practice your draw, and getting a grip on the gun. I seem to grab my 1911 right every time. No so with my wheel guns. I am still working on gripping the gun from the holster.

As was said above work on accuracy, your speed will pick up. You cannot miss fast enough to win a match.

Do not worry about where you place in the match. Have a good time. It is all about you getting better with your equipment.

Naw, you haven't screwed the pooch until the SO stops you and announces a DQ. Trust me, the SO wants you to be safe and have fun--not interested in your score.

Second time out it is still mostly a blur, but you might start picking up some things you need to practice--like remembering what that bump on the front of the gun is for. I still catch myself looking at the target when I should be focused on the front sight, especially when transitioning from point shooting a close target to a 20 yd target.

Never keep score while you are shooting; the only thing that matters is placing the next shot--and then the next.

When you are practicing drills, that is the time to push yourself and see how fast you can go before your shooting falls apart. In a match, getting good hits with smooth transitions and reloads are what matters. If it feels herky-jerky and the hits are -3 or misses, get it smooth.

I bought a new Bianchi 7 pancake and since it has a thumbsnap and needed breaking in I did some draw practice.

Not enough it seems because on my first stage you had to push an activator with your gun hand and then draw and engage while backing the bobber you just activated which popped up from behind a barrel for a couple of seconds.

Well, I missed the thumbsnap and am yanking away while said bobber comes and goes. I'm sure it was amusing to watch.

Wait until you have a paddle holster and draw the whole gun and holster at the same time. A dear friend of mine did that not once but twice during a match. I loaned him a better belt and his problems were gone. But, it did look funny and we all got a good laugh out of it.

Stay safe and have fun. I just went over another "evolution" bump this weekend myself. Have been using a fobus paddle for my 65. I drew on the last cof of the day. Don't know what i did, but it felt like i dislocated my shoulder!

IDPA is a lot of fun. Just keep showing up and hone your basics. If you will do some draws every day and dry fire a few minutes every day it will really pay off.

My first match I tried to insert my cell phone for a mag. we all got a big laugh out of that matter of fact we had to stop the match for a few mins till we got our selfs back together. Promise you if it can be done most of us have done it. Have fun and keep on shooting.

When I charged down the course (and completely unbeknownst to me) my speed loaders decided to stay behind. The whole gang was hugely entertained watching me snatch away at my now empty pouches.

1st with my 625PC

I just got a new 625PC .45acp to use in IDPA, and forgot to check out the schedual and showed up to find out it was a Classifier.....And I was going to pull the trigger for the first time with a live round at a classifier with my virgin wheelie...OH' it was funny, mostly trying to get used to that New long trigger pull, comming from the 1911 plattform.. and trying to remember to count to 6. Click-Click..Darn it..Plus I haven't picked up or shot a Revo in like 25 years, Not since I had to qualifiy for a Texas Security permit..But last regular IDPA match I got a double Tap on a swinger in the -O- ring, that I said " OK who just shot that over my shoulder.?..I'm starting to like this thing that goes around and around....O' by the way I classified as NOV in ESR with a score of 252.6...Now I just need to get down to 212.0 to be a MM..

Funny you tell that story. I'm going to try an evening shoot this Thursday with my CZ 75B and I just finished added electrical tape to the insde of my kydex double mag pouch because I thought they were too loose.

PeterCartwright...glad to know I wasn't the only one with that bright idea... Did the same thing during the 2008 IDPA Postal match. I'ts not so funny trying to run backwards to where you dropped them keeping your muzzle down range.

Oh and the next Satuday match I shoot I'm going to give the Highway Patrolman a run.

Won't be next month though. Lord willing I'll be a Knob Creek.
