I was looking at getting a 4506 rather than a 1911 for competition shooting. Are these pretty good for shooting fast and accurate? I am
in it for fun but want to have decent hardware for the matches.
Thanks.

I don't recall seeing any in a sanctioned match, but you may find them in IDPA club matches.
In IDPA/SSP (double action class) you would be shooting against the 9mm and slowed perhaps by .45 recoil.
In IDPA/CDP you would be shooting against 1911 single-action .45. Frankly guns like the 4506 and Sigs with their double action first shot are at a disadvantage against a good 1911 in gun handling.

In USPSA/IPSC I don't like to shoot with a magazine safety gun of any kind because their officials aren't trained for it and don't want them in the matches. I was once tackled by an old RO for putting the empty mag in to drop the hammer on a Brn HP. He wanted to disqualify me, but was told otherwise by the match director.

So basically I'm suggesting it would be OK to use it in an IDPA club match if that's the gun you prefer. The 4506 is certainly accurate and sturdy enough.

In regards to the TDA of the 4506 versus a 1911. You can send the 4506 back to S&W to have a Single-Action Only conversion done. If that route was done I would also considered having them lighten the trigger pull.

By doing so, in USPSA, you would be limited to shooting it in L10 or Limited and it wouldn't be competitive in Limited. Not real sure about L10 either.
