Which do you prefer. The original style gun, or the custom style?

Simple poll.

Original military type...

Or, all the modern high tech race gun or tactical style.

I own a Argentine M1927 Sistema Colt(1911A1)..and the Springfield Armory 1911A1 'Milspec'...

the M1927 is the real deal..pretty much as the US guv liked it's 1911 pistols...The 'Milspec' has the modern ejection port, throated barrel, and beveled magwell, bigger sights...shoots hollowpoints great.

If you will just shoot ball ammo..the plain old 1911A1(like the Sistema Colt) is all you need. The Springer 'Milspec' is much the same..just a few more mods to make it more compatable with hollowpoint ammo..and modern shooting principals.

Other stuff..like beavertail grip safetys, ambi-manual safetys, rails, extended/beveled magwells, etc are just tacticool foo-foo.

I'm seriously thinking on buying a Remington 1911 R1..which has all the same features my Springer 'Milspec' has..plus a tiny notch in the chamber as a loaded chamber indicator my older Springer does not include.

Most newer made standard 1911 pistols have the all the items I mentioned Springfield Armory Milspec has. A few 1911 models are true 'GI'..much like the old Sistema Colt M1927.

You can buy a factory 1911 from Springfield Armory or Kimber..or S&W..or Sig, etc with up-graded features/models as you see fit.

If you just want a base gun..the Budget Phillipenes made verssions are enjoying an excellent rep and cost a couple hundred less than any Rem, Springfield..and several hundred less than a Kimber/Les Baer/Wilson etc

The world is your oyster with 1911 pistols!

For my preference, take a millspec, add a beavertail safety and better sights. That's enough. Everything else is just window-dressing.

My Springfield Stainless Mil-Spec came with 3-dot sights. I had my pistolsmith add a checkered, flat, stainless mainspring housing, and a three hole aluminum trigger. Double-diamond Cocobolo grips. Will probably eventually add a beavertail safety and that will be enough bells and whistles for me.

I left my Colt Series 80 Combat Commander more original...had my 'smith do his "reliability package" to it. Original appearance retained. :)

Sir, I like some of the bells and whistles, most particularly good sights, but also the ability to feed and eject ammo other than hardball. For me, anything beyond that is "nice to have" rather than "must have."

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I view the 1911 as the Ford Mustang or Chevy Small block of pistols.
therefore I vote Mil Spec.
if standard issue isnt good enough ... you still have a foundation to hot rod in the critical areas as I have done with my GI Springfield.
I've fitted two barrels for it one a match grade 45 ACP another in 400 Corbon while I have also retained its less accurate but unstoppably reliable stock barrel.
there just are not that many sidearms you can do this to.

Since you only gave us two choices, I voted for the second one. I prefer some options, but not to be "tactical" or cool. I like a beaver tail grip safety and a rounded hammer to avoid hammer bite because I have fat hands. I like a lowered and flared ejection port for better performance. I like better sights for better sighting. :)

I have no use for rails, lasers, grenade launchers, microwaves, or coffee makers on any of my handguns. I'm neither tactical nor cool, but not completely old fashioned either...merely old. :p

Got both flavors, and I prefer mil-spec. My Colt Custom 10 Delta is simple under the electroless nickle as is the the beautiful Colt 45 dull finish ss 1991a1. The Kimber 10mm already came with the b&ws. I added some tricks to the SSE Delta, and I'm sorry I did. Should have gone in reverse instead. All have flat mainspring housings.

If I could, I'd at least change the sse Delta and the Kimber backwards to the milspec grip safety.

Hmmm, this is tough. My bullseye pistol has bells and whistles, including a slide-mounted UltraDot, so definitely not milspec. Then there's my hardball pistol, that is almost milspec except for the Bomar adjustable rear sight and checkering and accuracy work, and then there's the stock Colt National Match and a stock Series 70 Government model. So i guess the only true milspec pistol is the Series 70. So why did I say milspec when only one is, and that's doubtful because of the collet bushing...

Damn, now I have to go out and find a pre-70 Government so I can be milspec.

You need it to feed reliably and have good sights. I have a Gold Cup and a Commander with King-Tappan sights.
