M&P 40 for uspsa

Hi! New to the forum but old hand with a Smith. I'm looking to get into the USPSA game and wonder, who, if any, shoot an M&P 40 for comp. Which model? I like the look & feel but have no experience with them. My current pistol is of a different brand and is difficult to find equipment for it. Looking to go DA only, mine is DA/SA. Not wanting to hurt any feeling's, can't bring myself to the Glock side. Any recomendations?

MP and USPSA

No reason not to use MP40 .

I use my FS 9 with the holster that S&W supplied with the pistol. Holster is made by Bladetech.

One mag in gun and four more on belt gets me through nicely.

A good belt is a very good idea.

I think the MP40 is the softest recoiling 40 I ever shot.

P.S. Trigger may not be perfect out of the box, give it 200-300 rounds before considering any improvements.

Apex aftermarket parts will take care of any percieved trigger issues.

Burwell has a video for a trigger job.

I did the first part which is rounding the FP block and polishing the angle on the trigger bar which contacts it.

Your M&P will be just fine for USPSA. If you plan on shooting production division, you will need a common holster and mag pouches. No race gear allowed in Production. I use Comp-Tac
You will also be limited to 10 rounds per magazine. You can use a hi-cap mag but only load them to 10 rounds
The 9mm is THE round for Production but I still use a CZ75 in 40S&W. With lighter bullets it really isn’t much of a disadvantage

If you’ve never shot USPSA before, you will need 5 magazines. 4 on the belt and one for the gun

I too use a FS .40 M&P in USPSA, usually I am in Limited 10 major. On occassion I use my 9mm pro in production. All manufacturers offer holsters that are USPSA/IDPA legal. When I started I bought a used Glock 20-21 DeSantis OWB holster on eBay and the M&P fit it so well, I continue to use it.
You will do fine with your M&P .40 in either production or limited 10. The advice given on number of magazines is valid, might also include a sturdy belt to support your gear for the entire day.

PS. I found no need for any action work or APEX parts....just shoot it. Mine has over 15,000 rounds down range and it just keeps on getting better and better. One round at a time!

I have heard this before. Just why is 9mm "THE round"? I am not knowledgeable about USPSA and the scoring system, but like the OP, I intend to give it a whirl sometime soon. I understand that the .40 (loaded to major) scores higher in the outer scoring rings, but do not understand why 9mm has any advantage. Is it just a matter of being able to shoot the 9mm more rapidly (thus, a shorter time)?

I guess it is kind of a moot point for me. At my age, I don't intend to worry about being competitive - just hoping it will be something fun to shoot. I can no longer see well enough to shoot anything that requires a great deal of precision.

Thanks for so much input. It's nice to hear positive feedback about this pistol. I'm just wanting to make sure what will work best for me before I swap pistols. It appears that the M&P is better supported than the one I have now.

The 9mm is "the round" for Production class because everything is scored minor in it. For all the other classes the major power rounds are going to be more desirable.

"Production" in USPSA is all minor scoring, no major.

Back to Op's original question, I shot a Glock 22 for years in USPSA. No experience with M&P-40, though. Learn to rules before you shoot, and enjoy the game.......safely.

So a M&P 40L (5") can not be used in IDPA?

IDPA does not follow USPSA/IPSC rules.

An IDPA SSP must have an annual production of 2000 a year.
It is not clear to me whether that means 2000 M&P .40Ls or 2000 M&Ps.
Even if it applies to that exact model variation, you could still shoot it in ESP. You can shoot your M&P .40L in IDPA one way or the other.

Call IDPA for a clarification. Then you will KNOW and not guess.
