Discreet vs Concealed Carry

I don't have a problem with OC for the most part. Its the in your face, attention seeking, activists that I have a problem with. Always trying to provoke a reaction, and then they get mad when they get one

Just my humble opinion but I see a correlation with open carrying and marrying your sister. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

But yet you open carry anyway.
You guys are a riot! :D I started reading this thread thinking there would be some info regarding the legal differences regarding carry options in Michigan. Well there actually was, several pages back! I kept following for the repartee between the factions! This is better'n anything on TV!

Go get 'em! They called you a CC'er!!

Steve in Vermont -- You are very right about the hypocrisy. Texas has the reputation of every one carrying a gun but until they passed concealed carry back in the mid 90's there was no way to legally carry a handgun unlike the majority of the states. It was illegal to even have one in your car. There was a defense to prosecution for traveling but it was very hard to use depending on the cop and the court. Never understood how the rep got started.

WV has the same law as most other places. If you can't actually see the gun it's concealed. I wouldn't wear skin tight Underarmor but anything sensible should be fine.

West Virginia Code

Exactly. The OP referenced not caring if the gun prints heavily or is otherwise easily detected with "discreet" carry. Per code, that would not fly in WV. It's either concealed or its open. If carrying concealed, you have to be cautious that you are not printing heavily or occasionally flashing a holstered sidearm if the cover garment gets blown by the wind, etc. If you are open carrying, you have to be cautious that the holstered sidearm isn't inadvertently covered from view.

It would be nice to just throw on an untucked and unbuttoned flannel and not have to worry if the wind or a long reach briefly exposes a holstered sidearm, but such "discreet carry" could be problematic in WV.

Civilian open carry in public is just wrong in my opinion. When I see someone open carrying I expect to see a badge of some kind. Open carry says “I’m here to protect and serve.” Civilian carry is for personal protection. I know there are rare exceptions when a civilian may have to intervene on behalf of others, but odds are that will never happen and being canceled would likely be an advantage is such a case.

You know what they say about opinions..... :)

You know, many times I have read you guys referring to "No carrying gun`s signs" posted at business`s. I dont recall ever see`ing such a sign anywhere in my 70 year lifetime!
For that matter I have only seen a handfull of people open carrying IN TOWN that I suspected might not be LEO. Now in the boonies here in utah rideing quads etc, it`s common. They dont take me out much anymore.

I open carry on occasion, and I am a big proponent of it. The Right to bear arms means the RIGHT to BEAR Arms!

I have even been seen by law enforcement, with no comment other than something like "in my line of work, I have to carry a Glock" :D Only other person that asked anything of me was if I knew a good place to find holsters! :D

Ky. is a free open carry state (as it oughta be). It's pretty common knowledge (we even were taught it in grade school!) and law enforcement knows about it. I think the only place where folks get harassed about it is in like Louisville.. We can even open carry into the State Capitol. I used to have a link of a news story about it... I need to find it again. They even interviewed our Democratic governor about it, and even he didn't see any problem with it! :D

They look like this and ignoring them in Ohio will at the very least get your permit revoked and can lead fines and jail time as well as having your gear confiscated.

As far as open carry, in my state it's allowed but it's rare to see anyone doing it (I mean rare as in almost unheard of). CC, now that's hard to tell but that also is allowed (no permits for either). I would not be bothered by OC except if the person gave me reason to. Someone obviously drinking or under the influence of drugs or acting in a threatening manner would be cause for concern. Another advantage of living in this state is we don't get people "trying to make a point" by OC. They would be laughed at and told "so what, anyone can do that" and told to "grow up".

Steve, we have had OC in Louisiana so long that we do not remember when it was written into the law. Nobody pays it any attention. I may notice 2-3 a day doing OC. There is a few reasons here why OC is done at all.

1. Getting a State wide CCW takes a small fortune, lots of tme and 4 month turnaround. There are several affidavits one must get notarized, take an eight hour instruction course at a cost of about $100 (which can be by passed if one knows how), have photos made at a cost, have fingerprints taken at a cost and then furnish copies of divorce pleadings from all divorces, list any arrest (not convictions) and if there are any the person must get certified copies of court transcripts, give the addresses for all the places on has lived for the last 15 yrs and then after a few more hoops, the person sends all the paperwork in along with $125 money order.

2. The weather is warm and humid most of the year. Concealed carry is often uncomfortable and OC is much easier and totally free and legal.

So invest about $350 each five years along with a full day of instruction and such every five years or carry for free.

The LA State Police has intentionally made it difficult so it discouages people to get a permit. If one goes to Baton Rouge to the LA State Police and applies in person, the wait time is reduced to 21 days. If one gets a Parish permit, it can be obtained in as little as a half hour and at a fee of as little as $25. But they can only carry concealed in that parish.

Okay, here's a question: How come I have never seen "open carry" on any of my visits to New Orleans? Never.

Be safe.

In Minnesota we have both options. I prefer to carry concealed, and never admit to it. I do not want to draw attention to the fact I am armed, either to law abiding folks or bad guys. I don't want to be the first shot in a confrontation because I present a treat to the threat. I also don't want some citizen freaking out yelling, "He's got a gun!". There are rural areas that folks don't open carry, and there are some they do. I would rather keep a low profile and avoid any attention. Carrying a gun does not make me feel macho or invincible. I just don't feel the need for 'big iron on the hip' in general public.

On the other hand, if EVERYONE open carried, maybe the general population would come to accept firearms as a right and way of life in this country. And criminals would know they are out numbered right from the start.

Gun owners are their own worst enemies a lot of the times. Gun owners weren't big on "assault rifles" 20 years ago. Many were solidly on board the "no one needs that stuff" train. The ban gave that stuff some exposure and now the AR is the #1 seller. Now the thing is secret carry so we don't scare the steeple. If everyone started open carry where it's allowed before long it'd just be something common like seeing someone with a Starbucks. But we're a scared bunch, afraid we might offend someone.

People aren't as delicate as gun owners think.

I suspect if we did some research, we would find that 80 out of 100 wouldn't even notice the gun, 10 wouldn't care one way or another, 8 would be alarmed but would go on with life and 2 would have a hissy fit and go into "activist" mode and get OC outlawed.

The moral of the story? Two percent of the population is running the country! :)

Simple answer. When in New Orleans, you are in a different world. You are in areas where tourist frequent and in a city where laws are different. I compare New Orleans to be a different country.

Get out in Slidell, Metarie, Kenner and the other areas. Visit WalMart and those areas where you will see open carry. You will find few cars with weapons inside in New Orleans but elsewhere it is common practice.

I, personally, would not carry concealed in New Orleans due to the police down there. They do not take gun carry lightly. To them, amost everyone is a criminal. Also the murder rate there accounts for most of the rate in the state.

I open carry. However, I always dress presentably and I have a decent holster. I am a firm believer that if you carry yourself in a responsible manner, you will be treated responsibly and with respect. The only comment I have ever gotten from law enforcement was a guy who thought it was neat that someone still carried a revolver.

Occasionally, I will get a question from someone and I answer it directly and politely. I have never been asked to remove my firearm or leave a business.

Open or concealed, I could care less how someone chooses to carry. As long as they remain within the law.
OC is legal here in Ohio and Concealed with a permit. Not a real big deal if you ask me.

It is only a big deal with those that live in areas where OC is not allowed. They are not accustomed to seeing such and it is a change from what they have lived with for years.

You are correct. It is not a big deal where allowed.
