The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I have a couple of Highway Patrolmans, like this N86XXX I bought new in 1972.

Then there this S110XXX I mistook for a M27 when I first saw it.

Yep, chrome plating makes it hard to get a good picture, but the gold plating isn't as much of a problem. :) It was cheap enough that I bought it anyway.

That is the shiniest model 28 I have ever seen!

Heres my new-in-the-box 28-2 . The reciept shows it was purchased new in 1977 for $185.00 but I have a letter coming from the factory on it to verify the actual build date. Serial is N 2791XX . Never been shot and I intend on keeping it that way. Cliff

Some idiot spent a lot more money than a nickel plated .357 Magnum would have cost and ruined the value of the Highway Patrolman in the process. A couple of years later, I found a nickel plated M27-2, but it's an 8 3/8".

Got another 28-2 yesterday (6") #S3237XX to go with my 4" #N2260XX that appears to be unfired. The 6" is in excellent shape with the 3T's and I am loking forward to shooting it alot. Will post pictures when I get the game figured out.

Hmm. I should put my 28-2 in here. It's Ser No. 952xxx with a 4" barrel. For such a workaday handgun these are very attractive, aren't they?

In an all business kinda way. I like 'em more than their 'pretty boy' brother (:D), the Model 27.

(N)952xxx? Sounds like a transition between the -2 and -3. Recessed cylinder but the barrel isn't pinned?

Howdy,

Bought my second HP today (of course being in Australia I wont actually get to bring it home for about 2 months!)

I only have the store pic of it for now. It is a Model 28 (no dash) with a 6" barrel, 4 screw, Serial S201XXX (so I figure about late 1959?). It is only in "shooter" condition but I dont mind...I love shooting my 4" 28-2 and my 27-2. It is also my first 4 screw Smith.

Once again...not a beauty queen but I think it looks great :D It will look even better if I can find a set of diamond magnas for it :)

The top pic is the one I just purchased and the bottom is my old 4" M28-2 (1977). It will soon be wearing a new set of elk grips form Patrick...they are flying to me here in Aus as we speak :)

Cheers

Mike

S&W Aussie, I won a 28 no dash on Gunbroker Christmas Day. It is fairly close to yours, a 6", serial # S2011xx. Mine is not perfect, but VERY nice! Give us some reports when you get it! (ps. I also have a VPA Model10-8, that was used over there. really like it! ) Bob

HEy Bananaman,

I certainly will! Well done on your pick up from GB!

The serial on mine is S20165X so they are within 500-ish of each other. I would be very interested to see if a database has been put together out of the info on this thread!

Where was your 10-8 from?...VPA? Is that Victorian Police?

Cheers

Mike

Mike, Victoria Police Armoury. #03425, on the sticker. Andie The Aussie gave me some info after I got it. My 28 was at the tail end of the no dashes. Obviously yours is a little later. Probably late 1960-early 1961. -1 began in 1961. Bob
