To buy an M&P 22 or Ruger sr 22...help

I vote for the M&P .22. I am at about 700 rounds on mine, absolutely a ball to shoot and zero problems. I also have a Sig 1911-22, but prefer the feel of the M&P (yeah, I know... heresy to the 1911 lovers!).

I liked the M&P .22 so well I picked up a full sized 9, and I am looking at others... I think it got me hooked.

My impression of the SR22 wasn't very good... double action felt like a Keltec... safety moves in the wrong direction if you are used to the 1911... and a little too small. Didn't actually fire one.

I have looked at both, and they are very fine guns to be sure. I would choose the M&P22 as I already have the M&P9 and this would be a cheap alternative on the ammo side of things. There seems to be no issues I have ran across while researching the M&P that would cause me to not buy it. What is holding things up is the lack of funds at the moment. Of course, all donations accepted for this awesome in depth review.

There are some great in depth reviews out there, a few on AR15.com.

Oh brother... Was hoping this thread would help me out. Not yet. I carry an M&P 9c and would like a .22 for cheap training and plinking. Have handled both in question, but still can't decide. Still leaning towards the SR 22, due to the size comparison of my M&P 9c. Thoughts anyone?

Its pretty odd that almost everyone who says don't get the M&P doesn't even have one.And most haven't even shot one.

Hey there Arizona Gunner,
How well has your sig 1911-22 worked for you?
Thats another one that is on my list.
Why do you like the m&p-22 better/
Thanks

Why not the 22/45 or MkIII?

Thanks for the reply.
But i have those.
I kinda wanted a combat style pistol in 22.
I have a walther, but its kinda small for what i want.
The ruger sr-22 is on my list, but is about the same size as the walther.
So now i'm thinking or leaning toward's the m&p-22 or the sig 1911-22.

I didn't say don't get one, but I don't have one. I looked at one and gave my reason for why I no longer want one.

I headed out to buy an M&P 22 last month, but wad not overwhelmed by it, given the price. So I decided to get a River mk III target competition model, since I had wanted one since I was a kid (but it was a mk II back then). I can't say I was disappointed at all with the Ruger, but I might just as well have liked the M&P, which would be a great trainer.

m&p-22

As far as a combat style 22 pistol goes, i think the M&P get's it.
Well ok, so does the Sig. 1911-22.
Think it's going to be the M&P -22.;)
And then i will get the Sig-Gsg 1911-22,cause i like it too.:D
Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Saw the M&P22 at a gun show yesterday, price was getting better, found as low as 345.00. Some places had them as high as 435.00, while most were 375-379.00.

Looked at several GSG 1911-22, priced in the 335-345 range.

Found the SR22 for as low as 289.00, I would have bought it, but it was being held for someone else and it was the last one they had...

M&P 22 for me.It has been a good training pistol for my full size M&P.

I agree the M&P is a good training pistol especially if you have a M&P it gives you the same feel and familiarity. I always like the Ruger MKII and III but the grip is different compared to my other guns.

I shot both the Ruger and the M&P. For me, the M&P fit my hand better and just "felt" natural. In the end, I did purchase the M&P.

But beware: the M&P 22LR is the "gateway gun" to a serious S&W addiction. I bought mine about 5 weeks ago and now find myself the proud owner of a 3-day old M&P 9FS.
Just saying...

thiI was at the range yesterday and shot my brother in laws brand new Sig Mosquito and I rented a 22/45. Need less to say this will be my next pistol.

That Ruger Mk III is a fine quality, very sweet looking and shooting gun--but have you tried breaking it down yet? Nicely ask your LGS dealer to demonstrate how to take it down for cleaning. It's comparatively very difficult, in fact it's easy to scratch the gun while doing so. I wouldn't recommend it as a first gun for that reason, although if you're just shooting for target practice, it's hard to beat that gun for the money.

It's also so reliable, it seldom needs a complete break down for cleaning. They are on the tedious side to take down, but once you know how, it's like anything else. That 22/45 MkIII is a great pistol!

Like all the ruger 22's mk's, taking it apart is no big deal.
Putting it back together sometimes can be a challenge.
But it is a great gun. Have several variation's.
But i was looking for, at least in my case a combat style 22 pistol. The M&P seem's to fit the bill.
I think i have ruled out the Sig or the GSG. Still a little too much going on with those gun's.
But i will get a 22 conversion kit for one of my 1911's.
:D
