Any "Original" 17-6 and 617-0 purchasers out there?

011-2.jpg

I am not the original owner of my 17-6, but I am familiar with it's history and am certain that it came with the smooth wood combat stocks. Serial # is BEE 88xx. Carton states Fin. B, Stock. SB, Features F/L FULL TAR.

i'm not the original owner of this 617, but here is the box label.

Jughed 440, your box clearly says CS thanks, Mine like many does not give any other indication other than SB.

REBCAL, Very nice 17-6 with transitional 17-5 style heavy barrel ,
While 17-5 Heavy barrel K22's are more often found with Magna stocks anythings possible with S&W.

Average Ed. I have seen it on combats as well especially from the late 80's directly preceding the standardizing of the Smooth FG Combats, maybe theres a connection there.

My 17-6, serial # BDT73XX from 1989 came with Combat Stocks. Here is how it looks now. I'm with AveragEd, the Combat Stocks did not fit my hands & fingers well at all.

is your product code the same?? just curious to know if a 617 with target grips would have a different P.C.?

Im sure the target grips were available as an option but I
didnt consider the possability of an order over run creating a seperate run .

Good call.

Look at post number 13 on this thread.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/233606-what-does-full-target-mean-you.html

This is how mine came. Bought it ANIB but I am not the original owner.

I have come to understand the SB under stocks on the box end means "Square Butt"

Notice the description of "Full Target" on the box end.

That was what got me thinking about the grips on my gun.

Your product code is 100542 and while it includes "Full Target" the SCSW has your product code with "CS" for Combat Stocks".
Of course as with everything S&W "Nothing is absolute with S&W".

The 17-6 and 617 debuted in 1989 and apparently were produced simultaneously,
Product codes have the letters "TS" for "Target Stocks" and "CS" for Combat Stocks.

The Model 17-6 and 17-7 Product codes all begin 1005 : 09 CS, 10 says only SB, 12 TS, 16 TS, 38 CS, 40 CS, 42 CS, 44 CS,
72 only says "The Revolver"

617 and 617-1 (1989 to 1995) product codes also begin 1005 : 61 CS, 63 CS, 64 CS, 65 CS, CS, 67 CS, 68 CS (pic above) , 70 CS, 73 CS, 74 CS, 69 cased set with 686, Product codes after this are of 617-2's and higher.

17-6 and 17-7 With product codes 100512, 100516 had target stocks, maybe 100510 and 100572 .

617 and 617-1 Exclusively CS except 100569 Matched set of 617 and 686 not indicated in the product code.

I have both 4", and 6" first year model 617's. They both had the smooth combats on them when I bought them. It is hard to believe that someone would have changed them.

Engine49guy,
My 17-6 is a 6 incher that came with the smooth Combat grips. The serial number is BDS 95XX and purchased new in 1989. Like I said earier, when the guns were sold or traded, the grips were often kept by the previous owners.

Many prefer the target style but the answer was in the product codes,

Two versions of the blued full underlug 17-6 definately had target grips from the factory,
Doesnt appear the 617 came with targets unless the matched set sold with a 686 had them.
