Federal Bulk 550 Walmart ammo Problem

The Federal bulk pack used to be my top choice, mostly because the Remington bulk ammo has the wax that goops up my 17-2 and makes ejection difficult. But, about 3 years ago the Federal started hanging up in my Buckmark - both ejection and extraction problems. My two shooting buddies were having the same problems. So, we sold all our extra boxes at a gun show at a nice profit. Lately, I have tried another box of Federal and it seems OK. So, I think the problem may be linked to certain batches.

The gun could be Overlubed. Causing the extractor to not extract the spent casing all the way. THen the ejector may be too lubed and slipping. Just a thought

I was thinking this also. I'd give it a good wipedown and take it out and try again.

thank you guys for the fast replies. i have bad stovepiping problems with the federals. about every 6 to 10 rounds i will have a stovepipe. the federals are the only ammo i have shot through it and the weapon is cleaned very well with little oil, mostly dry lube. i dont what the problem is. what do you guys think?

I have one question for you . When you are firing the 15-22 have you checked to see if the bcg is fully seated before you fire and if it isnt is that the time your getting the stovepipes?

Yes it is seated every time. I checked while firing and stood beside someone else firing the weapon and its sits flush. It seems like it is weak ammo. Some shots will sound good and crisp and the ones that stovepipe you can tell they sound different. The gun is Completely dry of lube i don't like oily guns so i like to keep them just functioning.

To everyone else thank you for all the replies. I have checked the extractor and nothing is bent everything seems good. The federals are the only ammo i have shot through the weapon. I am going to pick up a box of CCI Mini Mag's today and try them out this weekend.

Thanks for everything guys I will let you guys know the outcome.

Thanks
Chris

sounds like a bad batch of ammo. I've had good luck with CCI mini mags I hope that cures your problem.
Winchester 555 white box didnt like to load in mine.

i switched to cci blazer about 2000 rounds ago and never looked back, now i never had any ftf or fte problems with the federals but the cci balzer are so dam accurate and on sale at dunhams all the time, pghrich

I'm new to this forum and will pick up my 15-22 this Thursday but here's my .02 Like all weapons with magazines, the rounds should be "back seated" like handgun mags. In other words, after your mag is loaded, whack the back of the mag against your hand so all the rounds are towards the back side. Also make sure your rounds are angled upwards. Hopefully this will help.

I'm not familiar with this particular pistol, but I once did a "fire 'til failure" test with a Ruger Mark I, and found that after thousands of rounds without cleaning, the first and only failures were extraction/ejection issues. Without cleaning or lubing anything else, I used a toothpick or similar implement to pick and scrape the significant accumulation of crud (the technical term...) out of the extractor notch in the breech face, and this solved the problem. The pistol continued to run for thousands more rounds with no more maintenance than this... I eventually felt guilty, and gave the gun a thorough cleaning and proper lubrication. You might pay attention to this easily overlooked maintenance issue...

Respectfully, the firearm in question is an M&P 15-22 rifle, not a pistol.

Oh, sorry, my mistake. However, I think my remark is nonetheless valid, as it makes no difference, rifle or pistol, as to the possible problem and its remedy...

Agreed. The only .22 semi-auto I own is my Savage Model 64, and it definately gets a little temperamental when it's good and dirty.
No disrespect meant from my last post.

You're saying the gun is pretty dry, and think it may be just a bad batch of ammo... I'd call Federal. Try another box and see what happens.

CCI blazer is really good ammo. I did an accuracy test out of my Marlin bolt action and for bulk ammo it's the most accurate out of Federal, Winchester, Remington, etc. I can get it at gun shows for $14.95 for 550!

Hey guys I wanted to give you an update on the weapon. I went to the range yesterday afternoon and ran CCI mini mag's and some winchester Super X through the gun.

I tried everything I could do to get a Malfunction with this ammo and it chewed it up. Mag Dumps were not a problem.

I then loaded just five rounds of the federal bulk in the weapon and the second shot stovepiped. I cleared the jam and then the fourth shot stovepiped. I am guessing just some bad ammo or my gun just really hates this stuff.

Anyways thanks again guys on all the comments and the help. I have realized I am part of a great community and really appreciate everything.

See you next time.
Thanks again
Chris

It really sounds like a bad batch of ammo could you please post the lot number from the box so we can avoid that lot.
thanks :D

I fired my 15-22 for the first time today having bought it yesterday, allthough the Federal bulk fired through it well I had flyers out as far as 2 and a half inches at 25 yards.

Using fiocchi it was far more accurate with sub half inch groups
