I just got a 6 shot ser. S952,312 and think it is 1947. If this is correct it is old enough for Social Security. It is square butt with original diamond grips. Looks like about 95%. The recoil shield shows no marks from fired cartridges. Do you think I could get $500 for it? Mike

Sounds to me like you have a postwar .38 M&P with the S-prefix indicating the presence of the improved hammer safety block introduced in 1945. Your proposed date of 1947 sounds correct.
I'd think a 98% or better postwar M&P could be a $500 gun if it had its box and maybe tools/papers. For a 95% gun by itself I think $400 would be a better estimate. The in-demand models (the two-inch guns in particular) might be $500 guns without box if in top condition.

Top money comes from serious collectors. While 95% is real nice it's not serious collector quality. No box also hurts value to collectors. Barrel length has huge impact on value with shorter being better.
