NYSP Mod 28-2 Photos added.

A member recently posted that he had seen a NYSP 28-2 at a LGS that is 45 minutes from me. I called tonight to ask about it, and it is still there. The asking price is $550 + tax ($44). I asked what the bottom line was and if there was wiggle room or a better price for cash. Nope, $550 is it.

Disappointment one.

It has a Red Dot on it, no box or docs, and is in "pretty good shape" according to the salesman.

So, disappointment #2. (The original poster did say it had the Red Dot, so it was not a surprise but was hoping they had something like the box...)

So, question is, is a pretty good shape NYSP 28-2 with a Red Dot worth $550? Assuming I could locate a period correct rear sight, what would a rear sight go for?

There is a good thing about this hunt- wife says it is ok for me to get it if I want!!! No need to sneak it into the safe when she is out shopping...

I don't know where you are, but in Southern California, without the red dot sight, it would be at least $600, maybe upwards to $700.

Does the NYSP add any value for you?
I would personaly pay a premium for a KSP, or one marked with Kentucky police marking's.
you may feel the same about NYSP, if thats the case i understand, go buy it.
But if it doesnt add anything to the gun for you, i would pass as it will cost you $50.00 or somewhere around that for a replacement sight,
and i feel it's price is on the steep end by at least $50.00.

I have no idea what a rear sight may sell for. I do know that if I were in the market for an M-28, especially one with an L.E. pedigree the asking price would not deter me. I also know that cash is king and the LGS may be more than willing to give some on the price if you were to walk in with a fist full of fifties.

I agree that going to the store in person will get a better response than trying to negotiate price over the phone.

If you do not want the Red Dot sight, you might ask what the price is without it.

If you are looking for a MD 28 I would pass on it. If you are looking for a NYSP marked MD 28 then I would go look at it and make a decision based on condition. Also were holes drilled to mount a red dot ? When they were sold surplus by NYSP I do not believe they had any boxes or Doc. I Pd 435 OTD for one in excellent condition about 14 months ago. Good Luck

As far as I know, the Red Dot did not require holes being drilled. I think it may be worth a drive. Makes sense too that there were no box/docs at trade in. I have a 28 no dash already, so I am in no hurry to get one, but having worked for two different Sheriff's offices, a NYSP 28 would be a kick to own, as I worked with and was friends with a lot of Troopers.

I'd look into selling the sight.
That's a nice Highway Patrolman. If there were any holes drilled for the sight I would say walk away. Otherwise I'd say 'Ya done good.

I have seen rear Smith sights on ebay before when looking for grips. You may want to look there. You will love the 28! Bob

Make sure and measure the distance to the screwhole on the rear sight. It changed a bit over the years.

I think it`s like 1/8 of an inch. I know there`s a small difference in the older guns.

I would be happy with that deal. I don't think you can go wrong with an N frame in that condition. You'll find a sight. Nice grip.
