CO movie theater shooting

Just a comment: Since the 1st of the year there's been well over 200 shot and killed in Chicago. Deaths are up 50% over last year. Probably 2-3 times that number wounded. On Memorial WE there were 40 shootings and 12 killed. June 9th WE there were 30 shot 10 dead. These are just "highlights". There is not a day that goes by without at least 6 shootings and 2 -3 deaths. Kids as young as 2 have been killed. Gangs have moved to AK's.
I was really not shocked by the recent theater shootings. There's way to many of the wrong people with guns out there. There's way too many "assault weapons" out there. Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?

But....but....they CAN'T do that; Chicago is a gun free zone! There are NO guns on the street there!

This is a real hoot, even if a good person with a legal ccw was in the theater what are the odds that he/she would have done any good or better yet cause more harm, duck cover look for a clean shot if your lucky, it was complete cluster and was over rather quickly. I don't think the average citizen without LEO, Military training would have been able to do any good under the circumstances. And if the good citizen did start shooting he/she is outgunned and now you have two persons shooting in a crowded theater. This was such a sad event and unfortunately the anti gun people are armed to the teeth with this nonsense. Such a waste of life for nothing and the media is making this incident a freaking carnival. Well if this looser wanted to get attention they sure are giving it to him.

Sorry, had to get it out...

It is becoming clear this murderer is a violent ultra left wing radical. Occupy Black Bloc has already claimed him as one of theirs.

And if you look at his tactics and target, it makes sense. The movie is an attack on the radicals.
I expected this to happen in Chicago, at least five years ago. Only I expected it to be Al Qaeda, and with both more resolution in the execution and a broader plan of social disruption. The operation I envisaged would have been far more devastating and would have turned Chicago into even more of a Hobbesian war of all against all than it already is.

As far as I know, the police lightbars missing in Chicago are still missing...

Bloomberg is on TV now saying people able to buy guns ammo etc, blah blah. Not supposed to sell guns to wack jobs or underage folks.

HEY....the feds sold/allowed "assult weapons" to the Mexican cartels and this process ended up with a rifle that was used to kill one of our Boarder Patrol guys. How about the news folks grilling Holder on violating guns laws!
Well, the "upside" to "Fast & Furious" is that the BATFE no longer has ANY credibility in the gun control debate.

ILLEGAL GUN TRAFFICKERS calling for gun control is about as pathetically amusing as that legislator caught dressed up in a tiger suit.

You can give the gun control industry EVERYTHING it wants, all at once or in stages, or you can give it NOTHING it wants.

Those are your choices, and the ONLY ones available.

I chose NOTHING.

You don't get a shark to go away by offering it your arm.

Even if it could talk and agree to the "compromise", it'd just LIE.

Suppose.........just for a moment.......that there was a CCW holder there who defied the law, carried his weapon into the theater for his own peace of mind, and shot the bad guy, or at least chased him back out the door and ended the carnage. Do you really think the drive-by media would say anything GOOD about that fact? Not likely. It would be buried under the hysteria and the chance to use the shooting as a chance to push for more idiotic gun-control laws. Remember the security guard who stopped the heavily-armed nutjob at that Colorado church a year or two back? It was news for about two minutes, then they went right back to their typical tub-thumping of Liberal causes. In the gun media she was a cause-celebre for a few days but it passed pretty quickly because legal gun owners already know how often armed citizens stop criminal activity.

"Never let a crisis go to waste." We already know who said it, it's become a mantra for their whole agenda, and that will NEVER change. All we can do is spread the word the best we can, convert those who are on the fence, and take as many non-shooters out for a bit of fun and responsible gun-handling, and hope they get it.

Preaching to the choir only helps if we continue to expand the size of the choir, and vote out the anti's every chance we get. But sometimes we're stuck with darned few "good" choices.

Liked 0 timesMany young men spend thousands of hours playing violent
video games. The purpose of these games is to kill as many of the targets as possible. as fast as they can.
Then they watch violent movies and violent TV.
Many also listen to violent music telling them to kill the cops and.do other unspeakable things .
Paintball games let them sharpen their skills of make-believe murder.

Do you think---------No, it could not be and besides it makes millions of dollars for certain people and that is what counts in the usa!

It's been written and said before but bears repeating.

There are no massacres at shooting ranges.

Does the no carry on the premise also apply to LEO?
I've heard people are saying it's GOOD that nobody else was armed, because otherwise there would have been a "fire fight".

A fire fight beats a massacre EVERY time... unless your goal is to protect the PERPETRATOR(S) of the massacre and not the victims.

I shoot at a public range and things have certainly changed over the years. Years ago it was older folks (like me) shooting revolvers and deer rifles. Today it's common to see young folks showing up with MP 15s and Glocks with extended magazines. Just last week I watched 3 young fellas firing these guns. Obviously no formal training. Very poor safety procedures and to watch you'd think they were playing a video game. Jokes about Rambo, killing Osama, etc. And this callous attitude towards these very deadly weapons has become the rule. This is something I've never seen with my (shooting) friends. With our country literally awash in guns, and a culture that doesn't take such possession seriously, it's no wonder we have shootings, both deliberate and accidental, every day. How do we fix this problem? I might ask how do we fix the financial mess we're in, or the drug problem. It seems we're good a creating problems, at solving them......not good. (But I do respect you for asking the question. That's more than many others have done.)

A few interesting bits...

Two of those killed were active duty military with intel type jobs.

At least one hi cap mag saved lives. The 100 rd drum jammed --as such are prone to - and took the rifle out of action. I wonder if it was a real Beta mag or a Korean knock off?

You sort of wonder what was said to the shooter on the phone call he took right before he started his mayhem.

He had lots of oxidizers and chemicals for bomb making. DHS supposedly keeps track of such purchases. Yet apparently no one noticed a pattern.

THe shooter was on Adult Friend Finder recently. His profile included the statement that he wanted to find the sort of girl who would visit him in prison.

No word yet as to whether there was a copy of Catcher in the Rye found.

Really?

What's the "right" quantity?

Oh yeah, what's an "assault weapon"?

I was in a local gun store the other day and they told me they have so many used AR's in stock they won't buy them outright. Everybody and his brother bought one in the last pre election. By about the time they figure out they haven't any real use for it, the gun gets sold. I shot and killed exactly one Coyote with a 20" Colt AR. I put parenthesis around "assault weapon" because I'm unsure of the definition. I've even heard the term attributed to Adolph. You tell me, should every household have an automatic rifle with a 30 RD. Mag.? Not where I live, believe me.

Actually in recent years the AR-15 has grown in popularity as a home defense long gun. The adjustable stock, lack of recoil, accuracy and effectiveness at short and long range make it ideal for some.

People need to understand that it isn't the guns that were used to do the deed. Mass murder went on for centuries before guns were even thought of. He could have just as easily had several 22 round magazines for each of his Glock pistols. He could have accomplished the same carnage with a gun in each hand.

The bottom line is some of us like high capacity long guns. If people don't like them then they don't have to buy them. But those that don't like them, don't speak for the rest of us.

Nobody makes a big deal about a lever action 30-30 that you can load on Sunday and shoot all week long.

  1. "Assault weapon" has NO fixed meaning. It's means whatever somebody who wants to ban as many guns as possible SAYS it means, at any given instant.
  2. "Assault RIFLE" refers to a long gun that is:
    • [comparatively] light
    • easy to handle
    • chambered for an "intermediate" style cartridge (7.92x33mm, 7.62x39mm, 5.56x45mm, 5.45x39mm, etc.)
    • capable of full auto

Does ANY firearm not requiring NFA paperwork meet the last criterion?

How many households do YOU know that have one?

Given that NO so-called "assault weapon" meets that last and MOST important criterion, what basis do YOU have for preventing a competent, non-felon adult from owning one? What argument can you muster that would not EQUALLY apply to a Remington 7600?

Back in the '90s when I was having problems with some neo-Nazis, one of the first things I did was go out and buy an Eagle lower, a 20" FN upper, a 16" CAR upper, and 1,000 rounds of M198 ball.

I'm always intrigued when people who assume ZERO responsibility for my safety, tell ME how I can and cannot protect MYSELF.

An assault weapon is a selective fire rifle or carbine chambered for an intermediate caliber. The definition has been the same since circa 1944. No assault weapons were used in the Colorado incident.

A semi automatic sporting rifle of a design dating back over 50 years was used. But it wasn't used much since it jammed quickly.

A pump action shotgun was used as well. It apparently worked.
