If you are going to pocket carry you might want to look at something with no hammer like a 442 or 642. You also might want to get something a little larger for home defense.
Ya gotta remember that snubbies are a little more difficult to shoot accurately without lotsa practice because of their small size and weight. They're better suited for concealed carry.
It would be more advantageous to have something the size of a K or L frame.
If it's gotta be a J frame snubby, consider fitting it with a larger grip and a laser. It'll give you more to hold onto and with a laser sight you can keep both eyes on the threat instead of trying to focus on the dinky little sights.
My 442 serves as both my concealed carry gun and a nightstand gun. It has a Pachmayr compact grip and a laserlyte laser. I did have to trim the grips to work with a speedloader.

You haven't told us what you want to do with the 637. I like the classic "Chief's Special" design, as I don't like to pocket carry. I use an OWB holsters. The IL doesn't bother me, either. If you don't like the IL, then I would go with the 642. Aviod the model 638.

I plan on using it for a nightstand gun and some range shooting. I like the small size and light weight of the J-frame's. The one that I am looking at has the Crimson Trace grip's which feel very good in the hand. I also like the ability to shoot SA/DA.............

637's are solid little guns. you will like it. The gray colored clear coat on the frame will
eventually come off but after that is over with every
thing will be fine.

I have a 637 and like it a lot. I bobbed the hammer for pocket carry, painted the front sight neon orange and neutered the IL.

I softened it up a bit with engine starting fluid and gently scraped it off with an old guitar pick.

People here have had FTF problems with the new 638's, with the internal lock.
I started collecting J-frames this year. I read all the posts that I can find about them. A lot of people say negative things about the IL. The only people that I read about, that actually have an IL gun and have had problems, had 638's.

I've heard of more issues with the Sc .357's...haven't actually heard anything about the 638's in regards to IL failures. Me personally, I don't like the Bodyguard design because that shroud is the perfect place for dust, dirt and pocket lint to build up. I don't believe in the necessity of SA in a CC piece, especially a pocket gun. I keep a 2.5" Model 66 for HD and a 640-1 for CC.
I'd recommend the Pro series model 60. You get a 3 inch barrel, front night sight, adjustable rear sight, wooden grips and .357 magnum capability. It's SA/DA and can be upgraded with Crimson Trace laser grips. And it's a J-frame. It's a lot of gun for only about $100 more.

I have carried a 637 for a couple years. No problems, finish still like new and it is very accurate if you do your part. Shoots right to point of aim.
The Pro Series Model 60 looks terrific, but where do you find it for only $100 more? The MSRP is $330 more ($779 vs $449).
Go back and reread the posts then check the Smith and Wesson web sight. 637 CT $669 MSRP, Pro Series Model 60 $779 MSRP. OK it's $110 more.
