M&P22 RD COUNT & RANGE REPORTS

Well, another range day with the M&P22. Went thru 750 rounds of blue box federal bulk. That puts me at 2850 rds. The first box went great with only 2 failure to eject. The second box was a different story, almost every other rd would not eject, wasn't pushing the slide back strong enough to eject. Had to stop, was trying for a 1000rd day. Is it possible to get a bad batch of ammo. The first box was a box that I had already and the second box was a new purchase. I think I'm gonna try the blazer bulk ammo next. Checked the ejector by putting in a full mag and racking the slide by hand, all came out fine. Any thoughts.
Still love the gun, just a little bump in the road.

22's are all naturally dirty. I use to get that same problem. Clean the barrel with some hoppes and a bore brush when you are shooting that many rounds will/should help solve the problem.

It's more than likely that "snotty" lube on the brass is building up in the chamber and causing the problem.

Had mine now for about a month....round count about 300. I know...I know....got to shoot more.

MP22,
That's ok, Just shoot when you can or feel like it. Main thing is to have fun and gain experience and sometimes the best way to do that for sum is slowly. Do you give it a good cleaning after your outing? I do. I figure the cleaner it is then smoother it will break in.. Just my way of thinking plus I like to clean the gun it's all part of shooting I enjoy it.. I only have 550 through mine so far and it's doing well.. Only had two issues one failure to fire a round.. This was a cci mini mag round and the other issue was low powered load had just enough power to eject the spent case and cock the hammer but did not bring the slide rearward enough to pickup a fresh round and feed it into the chamber , and this was a Remington lighting bolt round.. I feel both issues I had were ammo issues not gun issues.. So far I'm really happy with my M&P 22 but still getting use to the hole polymer frame thing.. My other bulk ammo is Federal blue box 525 rounds 36gr hp and i have a bulk box of Winchester white box 555 rounds 36gr hp " it does not say wildcats on the box" anyone have a preference what I shoot next?
The CCI mini mags did shoot with a more consistent power lever with a lot less smoke..
Remington Lighting bolts were very inconsistent in hhere report and felt power lever and smoke was heavy after the first 150 rounds or so by 300 rounds smoke was ridiculous IMO.. But they all seemed to print well on target if i do did my part.
I feel I keep my gun really clean and for range use I would still shoot them a as long as I was not shooting a high round count or was willing to clean the gun when issues start, I am.. I hope the federal or Winchester will shoot a bit more consistent and with a little less smoke.. I feel the smoke has a lot to do with the snot ot lube they use on some of the bulk ammo after a 150 or more round count the smoke gets heaver as it has to burn off the gun more..Sorry for the long post again but to me it's all part of the hobby shooting and it's all fun.. I like to get help when I need it, and give help when I can it's all shooting to me.. Have gun and be safe! George

my M&P 22 is almost new.i only have 500 rounds thru it.Have been using Winchester 555 rounds. As of this date no problems at all. I love it.!!!

Ok back from the range put 250 rounds of Winchester white box 555 36gr HP through it.. Total of 800 rounds.. No malfunctions of any kind with this Winchester ammo. But it shot at about 11:00 and high about 2" moved from 75feet to 30 feet and target looked the same except that the groups were very tight some less then 1" with 5&6 rounds overlapping eachother consistently but again high and to the right of center.. Checked my sights and they were fine didn't move.. I also found that the Winchester burned a bit cleaner too.. recoil was strong and consistent as was the report IMO a bit hotter then cci mini mags I shot.. Maybe that's why they were shooting high.. But would one brand shoot consistently to the right of another brand of ammo? I can see it shooting high but would think it should still be centered.. So far I found Remington 40gr SP to be POA and cci mini mags both 36gr HP and 40gr SP to shoot to POA.. Strange.. Going to take the gun down with the Winchesters again another day.. I know it shooting high but wonder if it's shooting to the right because of my ability or lack of today? But that's unlike me. I didn't have any other brand of ammo with me today.. Gun seems to be working in really nice.. Smooth slide operation and trigger is much more crisp too.. I don't think there is much over 3lbs on the trigger on this m&P22 I like it. Any suggestions? Thanks! George

Glad to see your starting to like this gun, I think I'll try the winchester ammo next.

Question?

With all of this shooting is there an objective?

Plinking?

Targets for groups?

Just to hear the noise?

Spray and Pray?

ETC.??

Road Rat,
Well practice, control, improving skill, learning proper gun hold and instinctive muscle control, all that you can do improve your shooting skills. But I think in this post we are just talking about basic gun breaking in how the gun's liking some cheap ammo and having fun.. For me I try for tighter small groups in the 9&10 ring.. I look for consistency from day to day with improvement. Plinking at steal cans is fun because you try to keep them moving or in the air at times. Can't do that at my range though.. Paper only.. Some steal too.. Keeps cost down on .45's too! But yes making holes in paper as close to or overlapping eachother with a small a group as posable at POA at a plausible fighting distance.. And ya FUN!! Just good old clean fun!! George

Hey Jesse, let me know if the Winchester white box 555 36gr Hp's shoot to POA for you.. I'm going to head down the range again tomorrow with them and see if I have better luck .. But they seem to be hot loads with very good consistency with report and felt recoil. They also seem to burn much cleaner then the Remington.. I'm going to bring some known good POA ammo with me also. I can see if it's me having a off day or not.. oh got mine at Walmart! George

Well, for me its what George said, practice, control, improving skill, learning proper gun hold and instinctive muscle control, all that you can do improve your shooting skills. Me and my son are new to shooting and its something we can do together and get better at. We have a good time trying to outshoot each other and just learning something new. And like George said, its just good old clean fun.

Ok at the 950 to 1000 round mark.. I did get down to the range this am.. As I said Winchester was shooting at about 11:00 and high.. I looked at both the front sight and rear for being centered.. Rear looked good.. Front looked off a bit to far to the right.. I decided to confirm with a digital caliper. It was off to the right.. Move the front sight to the left just a tad. Made a pencil mark to tell where it was originally. snugged it down.. Ya much better now.. still shooting high but groups are centered now above the bulls eye! I then shot the gun with The Winchester white box 555 rd's, Remington thunder bolt, and for the first time Federal bulk blue box 525 rd's. Ok now all shot or should I say printed well in center of target with the Remington just hitting a tad lower then the rest but still well high about a good 1" from the bulls eye. I then decided to lower the rear sight by one click, clockwise. this gave me a much better more consistent groups in and around the bulls eye.. Only thing I found out is that my gun loved the Winchester not a hitch.. Was ok with the Remington IMO just enough power to run the gun when clean most of the time but the Blue box Federal was by far the worst.. Clean gun still failure to fire a round about 3 out of 12 rounds most of the time.. other times it just didn't have the power to cock the hammer when it did fire.. I'll take this Federal blue box down with my Beretta 71 and see how it like it.. I bet it will gobble it up with maybe a failure to fire or two.. Years ago I never had this kind of consistently bad ammo and I used everything and anything that was cheap.. Also my gun does like cci Mini Mags both 36gr hp and 40 gr rn. To me the Winchester seemed a bit hotter load then the CCi's. Now got to start really planning on the rear sight modification so I can pick it up better wit my bad eyes.. It's amazing how much is instinctive as I still shoot ok considering my eyes went down hill.. George

INEXPENSIVE CURE FOR BAD EYES

George, I don't know if this will work for you, but this is what I did. I found this on another forum, looking for a solution of having to use bifocals.

(Bifocal/front sight problem solved!
I wear bifocals. But I take them off when shooting; otherwise, I've got to tilt my head way back to bring the front sight into focus through the bi-focal part of the lens of my glasses. Bummer. Then I came across an interesting product: stick-on bifocals. I bought a set (paid about $16, but since learned they are available for much less). The kind I found are called "OPTIX Stick-on Bifocals". I'm not associated with this company; there may be others.
Here's what I did.
1. I went to the big ChinaMart and put on pairs of their reading glasses right over my glasses, until I found a pair that let me read comfortably through the upper part of my lens, figuring if I could read print, I would also be able to see the front sight. I noted the magnifying power for that pair of glasses. That comes as a + 1, or +1.5, or +2 etc.
2. Back home I ordered the magnifying bi-focal lenses, in my case a +2.50. They are the familiar half-moon shape.
3. When the lenses arrived, I carefully scissored out a piece about 3/8" wide and 5/8" tall and shaped it as best I could to conform to the curve of the frame in the upper-left corner of my right-eye lens. It is not a perfect fit, but it turned out not to be critical.

The garage is where I dry-fire--no ammo available there. My firing stance is 30 degrees off-center and to the right, so I naturally tend to look through the left side of my glasses. As I brought up the weapon the first time, my right eye found that magnifying piece immediately; there was the front sight clear as could be (and the target fuzzy as it should be!). Wow!
Problem solved.
Oh, and that little piece of lens is no more intrusive when you're looking straight on, for example as in driving, than the bifocal at the bottom; I got used to it immediately. And so far nobody, including She Who Must Be Obeyed, has noticed it.
Hope this is helpful. )

These stick-on bifocals have worked great, if all you wear are reading glasses, you can use these on your regular shooting glasses, they are hard to find though, everywhere I looked they were sold out, I ended up finding them on ebay, they were $24. I am still trying to figure the perfect spot for them. The good thing is that you can take them off and reapply them and cut them into the shape that works best for you. With the two lenses that I got, I figure that I can get about 10 pieces out of them. Thats alot of replacements and should last a long time. This is what they look like,

I just used one and cut a small portion and put it on the inner portion of my glasses of my shooting eye, I am trying different positions. I read that some have glasses made with the bifocal on top. That is where I will try them next. I have a backup pair of old glasses that I am using them on. These will be my range glasses. I hope this can help you or anyone reading this

Jesse, Wow thanks! Great idea! Going to hit a few places tomorrow and see if I can find them local to me.. Sounds like that's just what i need.. I'm not doing to bad just by instinctively shooting just because years ago I use to shoot a great deal. But to see my sights and the target clear again would be something.. Thank you so much for the great explication and in such detail too.. Now I got a direction to go in that will help.. I'll let you know how I make out!! George

Well, finally found some Winchester ammo, hard to find here. This is what I found at Walmart for $9.97 a box.

not my local one, they never have anything in stock. I was on the other side of town today and saw a Walmart and thought I'd give it a try. They were fully stocked. They were only 9.97 a box, which I thought was a great deal for my area. I bought out there whole stock. I hope they work as well for me as they did for you. If not I have a revolver that they should work with. Will let you know how they work.

Try looking in your local Hobby Shops and Drug Stores too. There are a ton of "cheaters" out there. I have some clip ons that work great for close work and have also found "cheaters" the size of old granny classes that can be worn under "normal" glasses at some Drug Stores. I do small detailed work in another hobby I have and they work great. I had cataracts a few years ago and had to have inplants put in (I went with the longer range) and need "cheaters for doing fine print reading or small detailed work.

Wow you got a good deal here it's almost $14 bucks..If they don't work out for you maybe I'll take them off your hands in a flat rate postal box.. But I think your going to like them! George

MaddMax,
We have a few dollar stores here and a Job lots that should have a good selection.. Thanks! George

Hey, George, finally got to shoot the Winchester ammo, it worked great with the gun. I went thru 3 boxes without a hitch. It shot POA. I think I'm gonna stick with this one, I like it and the gun likes it and the price is right. Thanks.
