Talon Grips

Did you clean the bottom side of the overlap real good with suplied pad? If not then thats why. Also heated with hair dryer step 5 and pushed on firm while warm. Mine are firm in place and perfect. I really love the rubber texture.

I thoroughly wiped down the grip but didn't think to wipe down the bottom portion of the talon that would overlap on the backstrap. Looking at the instructions again it plainly says to do just that. I realize now that I overlapped the wrong way (supposed to be the right side on the bottom), so I'll have to do the backstrap again.

I guess I don't see the benefit of the overlap. Regardless of the adhesive, generally you have less bond the more textured a surface as well as something sticking out to catch on things and peel away. Cutting the overlap off seemed like the logical thing to do.

I agree cutting it off sounds like better option but honestly when overlaped correctly then heated and pressed mine is flat with nothing sticking out and feeling probably just like yours. It does not stick out or anything and I can't feel a line or anything where it overlaps. I supose it's 6 of 1 half dozzen of the other.

I just put my Talon grip on my Shield this week. Today I took it to the range and was showing the grip to one of the rangers. He wanted to know how I put it on and I told him. He look and look but couldn't find the overlap. I finally had to show him. I used a hair dryer on mine and the grip fits perfectly.

Nice! I really love mine!

I tried it both ways. Thought I might be okay with the overlapped method, but even with me paying careful attention to the footnote regarding the necessity of cleaning the overlapping pieces first, then heating (multiple times) and compressing in to place (as directed in step 5), I still ended up with less-than-satifactory adhession.

So, I broke out the Xacto knife box and careful cut along the end points of the overlapping pieces, being mindful of not pressing too hard and cutting in to the plastic backstrap, then removed the pieces and reapplied alcohol to clean, then refitted and reheated as directed. Though it was a small bit of extra work, and certainly not required to be functional, I do think the finished result is more to my liking.

Below are a couple of macro photos help illustrate the differences. The first photos is of overlapped fitting and the second is the trimmed version.

Looks good sir! Like I said, I loved mine after I cut off the access.

I ordered my rubber Talons on Monday and was hoping they would be here by now- but no happiness in the mailbox today. What's the turnaround time on these lately? I know Derek passed away (RIP) and these Shield grips are wildly popular right now. I don't even have the Shield yet so there is no real rush I guess.

Mine were also ordered on Monday and landed in my PO Box yesterday. The grip tape comes to you in a letter-sized envelope, 1st class postage from Steamboat Springs, CO. Hard to do much better than that for no added shipping charge.

Thanks. Just showed the Shield to a friend and he thought the rubber Talon grips were factory. Looking at the transition from the factory texture under the trigger guard and the Talon material on the front strap and it is hard to tell where one starts and the other leaves off.

Talon gets 5 stars from me on their Shield grips.
Talon was right on the ball getting these grips out so soon after the Shield came out. These are the must thing to have for your new Shield. I also went went with the rubber texture. The price is so reasonable you really can't go wrong. I didn't bother to put the 8 round magazine grip on because I usually only have the 7 rounder in the gun when carring concealed. I would definitely order from Talon again. Thanks Talon for the great product.

I put the granular (sandpaper) on my range guns and rubber on my carry guns. The granular are basically 100 grit sandpaper with an adhesive backing. You get a super grip in all conditions, but it will wear out your clothes, holster, and of course your skin. The rubber grips have superior gripping surface over a stock gun grip, without the wear and tear. The rubber works well even in the high heat and humidity (sweat) of summertime Florida, but for ultimate grip use the granular.

Spoke to Mike at Talon Grips. His suggestion to get the grip to stick is to use a rubber glue, such as shoe goo.

Only the very bottom of my overlap was giving me a problem, so I used a little dab of my wife's clear nail polish on the seam and it hasn't moved since.

From the Talon website:

RUBBER TEXTURE ONLY: Due to different backstrap sizes, trimming of the grip is recommended in order to avoid overlap.  Overlapping the rubber onto itself may result in peeling.

Can i ask you a silly question. I read left and rgt that rubber grips are not recomended for CCW as it maybe hard to draw the gun against the clothes. I understand that might be great for the range, but what about for CC and time to draw from IWB? thanks

It's hard to imagine that rubber grips are not recommended for CCW; when drawn, your hand will pretty well cover the grips, so I wouldn't expect them to catch. And certainly rubber grips are, well, gripped better, by your hands. So I would tend to disagree with the statement.

I pocket carry the Shield using a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster, and results are the same with or without the Talon's. Pocket carry is probably the worst extreme for grips grabbing things they should not grab. Talon's work great for CCW, don't hang on clothes, and give you a much better grip and feel of the weapon. The Talon's were a very nice improvement over the Hogue Jr grip sleeve I originally tried for a couple weeks, and are what I will now use on all CCW's. Highly recommend.
