S&W M&P 22

I really like my M&P22. I almost got a Browning Buckmark, which i am sure is a bit more accurate, but I hate the look of the Rugers and Brownings. I'm not a target shooter. Got the M&P22 for fun, and it sure is! Rear sights suck. Hard to pick up. I painted the rear sight white so it's like a Glock outline sight. when they finally come out with adjustable rear sights made for the M&P22, I'll be buying one.

What I find very odd is people saying "the M&P is fun, but it's nowhere near as accurate as my Mark III or Buckmark". That may be so, but if you go over to the M&P 15-22 forum, there's a post on there asking for opinions of whether to buy the Ruger 10/22 or the M&P 15-22. Overwhelmingly, posters responded with "my 10/22 sits in the safe now that I bought my 15-22.". Funny how accuracy is prized when it comes to handguns, but not so much when it comes to rifles. I know I stick pencils in the dirt and shoot the erasers off with my 10/22 at 50 yards, and that's with bulk Walmart ammo.

My M+P22 has adjustable rear sight... When did you buy yours?

Myself, I prefer the blacked out rear sight. Then you have no option but to focus on front sight. Quick target acquisition.

If I were target shooting, then yea, please give me rear dots or frame on the rear sight.

Actually I think a Bar-Dot sight system would be super bad a**. I have a carry pistol that uses the Bar-Dot sights which I feel are fantastic. Super simple and easy to line up.

There's an aftermarket front sight for the gun. I think Dawson makes it. Looks good and it will be under my tree on Christmas morning.

Just shot a friends M&P 22, over the weekend and it is now on my short list. Nice gun, great feel, and 0 (zero) problems.

Mine has adjustable sights too. I meant aftermarket adjustable sights. The black on black rear sight on the M&P22 sucks. Don;t know why hey would have made them like that.

Mine has an adjustable rear sight....just don't like it. I have painted it so it looks like a Glock rear sight. Some better...but think I will replace it.

it "definitely" is not a target gun. it's only good for training and plinking. it is easy to shoot and if i only load 11 rounds in the 12 round clip it seems to not misfire as much. mine will only shoot (at best) 3''-4'' groups off of sand bags at 25yds.

It may do a little better then that give it some time. but that's about the best I can do free hand and standing but it's consistent and the groups seem to be getting smaller. It's a light gun.. George

What type of paint did you use. I might try doing the Bar-Dot myself if it turns out good. Did you cut a recess into the metal then fill it with color?

Can you post a pic of your painted rear sights, I'm looking for a solution too.

I'm really happy with my M&P22 and all my friends that tried mine but one for themselves. You'll be very happy with yours, it's just a fun pistol to shoot and train with.

I just painted the rear blade white with high gloss white paint.

Yesterday I finally went to pick up my M&P22. This is mostly for my daughter and I. Showed it off to several buddies last night and they really want one now. LOL.

Last night I field stripped it and cleaned the oil off. Boy Walther wasn't shy with the oil what so ever. LOL. There was oil coming out of every seam and hole. No biggie.

I reassembled last night and headed out to the range this morning. Picked up two bulk boxes of CCI Blazer on the way. I was lucky at first...had the range all to myself. Later on there were several people, beginners and experienced. But everyone was shooting from the benches clear back at 25yds which was way farther than I had been with the M&P22. In total I only shot 300 rounds or so. No misfires or failures.

I ended up leaving cause I'd have to wait 15 minutes or so between each magazine. I did have my XDM 9mm and Ruger 10/22 and Kahr CW9 to mess with but only really used the 10/22 from that distance. Anyway...

As the day went on with the M&P22 there were two things that caught my attention (both cured if I had the manual memorized):
Shots were 3-4 inches high
Slide was getting stuck rearward (stay tuned)

The shot groupings were really excellent in my opinion. Very consistent but high. I adjusted rear sight several times but later found out I was adjusting the wrong direction. The sight adjustment isn't marked but will be soon. So I had the sight maxed out in the "higher" position. Doh!!!!

The slide getting stuck back was weird to me...till I read the manual after getting home. But at the range the slide was sticking rearward after last shot. It was stuck farther back than just the slide release button. Far enough back that the slide was trying to lift in the rear and field strip itself. But the slide wasn't actually getting high enough to get there. So then when reloading the pistol and trying to powerstroke the slide OR use the slide release...the slide was not moving. But if I'd rest my hand on top of the slide it would go into battery nice and smooth. Okaaaay?!? This happened several times and with the other shooters around I just didn't have the shooting time to diagnose. So went home.

At home I stripped the pistol down and found the recoil spring was bent badly and there was no buffer ring. Sometime during my cleaning last night I lost that buffer ring. So that means the slide was traveling way too far back during recoil. Hence the slide getting stuck from traveling too far and the magazine follower pushing the slide release up against the slide...lifting it up. Since the recoil spring was getting completely smashed, it tried to fold or something.

Now I need to try to find a new recoil spring and buffer ring. I can not find that buffer ring anywhere here at home. I had a clean bench when I started cleaning last night. I checked the floor for 45 minutes today. Moved the stove, crawled around every corner, checked down the hallway, I Don't Know. I simply can't find it. LOL. Oh there was a small gear bag also but it was zipped closed. The buffer ring is just gone.

I would give S&W a call maybe get two of each. It will be nice if they ever get a supply of small parts for the M&P 22 to the US. Seems that everything takes time to get a shipment from Germany for the gun. If your handy maybe you can fab something out of dome PVC pipe or a piece of hard rubber.. I would think it would not be to bad to do.. First drill a hole to fit the spring with a forstner drill bit this will give you a flat bottom and a indicator mark so you can Drill a hole to fit the guide rode. Then cut the rest to size.. If I can think of anything that's more or less pre made I'll compare it to my buffer bushing and throw a idea at you.. But this way S&W can get the ball rolling on your parts.. Good luck you still may find it..Don't keep using it with out the buffer you will batter the gun up. George
