M&P SHIELD 0.40 CALIBER MAGAZINE DROP PROBLEM POLL

where are you?

i would gladly travel 50 miles to your house with a hammer and a punch and fix this pistol for you in about 10 minutes.

i'm not joking, i'm in central FL.

I'm in Atlanta, and the pistol, Who Knows??? S&W swears it was mailed today although FEDEX has NO RECORD of the tracking number. My guess is it's another stall tactic.

I should have, and could have fixed it myself. Considering the gun was only 1 day old I wanted S&W to make it right. MISTAKE!

Just joined the forum. I just got the call from my local shop that my 40 Shield is in stock after being put on the wait list. He told me the serial number begins with DXY. So if I pick this up tomorrow, where does one obtain the contact information just in case I need to call S&W to inform them of another problem?

well, hell, i'll fix your's too if it needs it. meet you at I4 and state rd 27 truck stop. i'll bring my hammer and punch:D

i'm not joking.

Done. What is that about MM 50 or so? I usually head out to Lakeland exit 38 on Tuesdays and Thursday for a certain job.

For those who have had their guns returned from S&W, have their been any problems or are they working just fine?

.40 Shield Magazine Dropping

Everyone,
I'm brand new to this site and frankly, I signed on to see if there were other .40 S&W Shield owners having a problem with the magazine dropping. I took my brand new Shield to the range this week and loaded the magazines with five rounds each. No problems. Loading each magazine to capacity, both dropped from the pistol while in recoil. I thought I might be inadvertently activating the mag release so, I had tht range officer fire the pistol. Same problem. It continued to drop the mag and did not cycle the next round. The piece went back to the dealer for S&W repairs.
Very disappointing. I am a former LEO, now a security manager in a large metropolitan hospital, required to be armed. I have been using a S&W 442 but thought the .40 Shield would be THE perfect piece for my needs. I'm sure that the problem will be corrected but, it will take a lot of time on the range to regain confidence in the Shield.

hey guys and gals! new guy on the forum but long time shooting/collector!

i have been following the site/thread for awhile before picking up my shield 40! i was lucky and got on the Sept 5th...

Anyways i got it for the girl for SD and conceal Carry and she loves it! but we havn't shot it yet. so after reading this entire thread i figured i would throw in my two cents.

my shield 40 is a DXY4*** model, i bought it damn near right off the truck, and it did not come with the "factory Modified" mags as you guys are getting when you send them in.

So in normal fashion i broke down the entire gun for a clean and look over, as well as the mags to do the bump out... now i went to where it just made a groove in the mag well and then barely backed it off, but as stated it still wiggles.

so then i put two strips of everyday electrical tape on both backs of the mags. it was to tight and would not install, removed one piece of tape and went in tight, and pop's out about 1" but will not fall out.

the other complaint i had was how freaking tight the mag spring was to fight while installing rounds! HOLY ****! so i took one half coil off the 7 rounder and one off the 6. this seemed to make it a little better but dont want to take anymore off till i see how it feeds on the last one (though i think i will be able to take another 1 coil off each.

As stated this needs to be at least noted to all shops that are selling it, mine had no idea to the issues, and all in all its an easy fix, BUT S&W needs to do the right thing...

going to shoot a box of 180 grain Ball FMJ American Eagle tomorrow so i'll get back to you.

Thanks for all the info and hope mine helps!

P.S. with these mods their is NO Rattles or clinks on the shake test with slide open of not...

Add me as a shield 40 owner that has no problems with mag drops. only 100 rounds or so through it, hope to shoot it more in a week or so. But ok, for now.... SN DXPxxxx

I may do the mag punch mod, and add the bump even if I have no problems... for peace of mind. great gun. love it.

Mine is a dropper but it didn't start dropping mags until about 150 rounds into breaking it in. Ended up sending it back to S&W a couple days ago. DXX serial and the casing envelope date is 6/29/12.

I just received mine back Thursday and all they did was replace the magazine release.
They did not dimple out the magazines.
Since yours and mine are both DXX serial numbers and the casing envelopes are only one day apart (mine is 06/28/12)
I would be very interested to hear what they repair/replace on yours when it is returned.
Maybe we can start to narrow down the serial numbers to dates,
and which ones require a magazine release replacement
versus magazine 'modifications', versus both.

well as stated in this thread a page back or so it sounds like they are up to a "4" stamping on the mag releases, but havn't changed the specs... which they dont need to...

they need to correct the mag dimensions...

My DXX serial 40 didnt drop mags until 50 rounds or so. I bought a punch and modified my mags. No issues after that. I just bought another 40 shield for a friend of mine a few days ago. Same serial series DXX. Im going to let him decide if he wants to send it to s&w or modify the mags himself after i give it to him.

76 more rounds down range today for a total of 376. Most were through the extended mag. No drops yet.

Actually if you go back to a post by me and RobKarRob (posts #233 and #236), you will find that there is a dimensional change in the mag releases. Mine is an DXP model and they are different than the ones that are dropping mags.

Perhaps someone that has received a weapon back with a new mag release could get a set of calipers and measure theirs and see if there is any difference.
