Your Thoughts on Pocket Holsters

Pocket carry a lot (about 80% of the time) and prefer Uncle Mikes cheapie holsters in my right front pocket.

I posted this question in another recent thread and didn't get a response, so I'll ask it again here.

I carried a Keltec P32 in an Andrews Custom Leather pocket holster for a number of years. That gun worked really well in my pockets because it was so thin, and I liked being able to have my gun in my hand when I felt more comfortable to do so. But, for me, I find my J frames a little bulky for pocket carry in most of my clothes.

I see a lot of recommendations for the Mika pocket holster, and maybe it's just me, but they LOOK sorta bulky. If I were to attempt pocket carry of my 638 I'd really like to use as thin of a package as possible. Does the Mika add bulk to what seems to already be a little too bulky of a gun for that application to me, or is that just my visual interpretation of how they "look".

Another Mika user here!

On your other post, you really have a nice selection of revolvers. I only have two S&W revolvers, and four total, but if I buy any others it will be S&W most likely.

I keep looking at the one that shoots 38 Spl and 357 Mag, but the priece for the ones I saw is quite steep.

They're the least "bulky" of any I've tried. The material is very thin compared to others and the strip around the "mouth" is just springy enough to keep the holster open a little if you want to reholster with the holster still in your pocket. I used to make my own holsters out of the tongues from old jump boots. I'd always cut the tongues out before I threw the old boots away. I don't care about "printing" and really only wanted a holster to keep the front sight from poking a hole in my pockets. The Mika holster does everything I need it to and it's thick enough to not print.

I pocket carry my M&P40C in a DeSantis pocket holster &
it works pretty well. It doesn't print too bad.

Here are a couple of pictures that will go along with what MaxiumLawman posted above.

This one just shows the area with the insert, sewn
between the layers, that keeps it open on the top.

I ordered a couple of the J-frame Mika holsters several years ago. I had one of each for the two pocket bottom angles.

I didn't like them...too thick and bulky compared to the Wild Bill's horsehide one and other similar open ones. I soon sold them.

Maybe he has thinned them down someway during the years.

I'll stick with this style in leather.

You have to use the Mika for a month or so and it flattens out and "fits" to the gun.

The problem I've had with every single leather pocket holster is they are too tight. I wish someone would make one like the one in your picture but loose fitting.

Take your pick; if you don't find it here, well.....

Try making your own. Take some thin leather, like the tongue of an old jump boot, trace your outline on it and sew two of them together. If you sew it yourself, it's free. If you take it to the shoemaker...maybe a couple bucks. Either way....it's how grandpa would have done it and it repurposed your old boots.

This one is loose...so loose I can hold the gun by the grip and the holster falls off. Of course I've had that holster for years.

I might try a Mika holster for a 2.5 K-frame.

I have found that non sticky grip is easier to get out of my pocket.......

Every single morning a LCP goes in my pocket before I step out of the house. I use a blackhawk #1 holster that I got the day I bought the gun. If me an the wife go out on the town I may choose to carry my CW40 in a MTAC at 5:30 ish inside the waist band. Biggest down side with pocket carry is sitting down you don't have a chance in heck of getting out drawing your firearm.

I use a cheap uncle mikes for my kahr and beretta nano. My XDS fits it as well but it's a tad too big in jeans to PC. I like kydex but I'd rather carry iwb and spend money on holsters there. Desantis is good and are are many others.
