Interesting encounter with a Hoplophobe today at the grocery store

Cooper was a very educated man, and in my opinion, a very smart man as well. I enjoy his writings to this day and find much to recommend his common sense observations and advice.

I most admired his zest for life and his penchant toward linguistics, the meaning and use of words.

"Hoplophobe" is a very accurate and descriptive word for those so afflicted.

That is one thing about the Col. that always stood out to me. He emphasized that words had a meaning that many would warp into something else. Like the clip/magazine issue.

Anytime I see a magazine with the president's mug on the cover, I turn it around or cover it up. :D

Just because you told us that....

Just because you told us that, I'm going to visit several stores, buy a few gun mags and make sure that they are all prominently displayed! BTW, I just learned a new word. Hoplophobia. Is that related to the Greek for 'soldier' (hoplite)? Looking it up I see that 'hoplon' is the shield they carry, the term is extended to any weapons carried. Cool beans. Thanks!:)

Whats does Hoplophobe stand for? I get what you guys are saying just never heard that word before

Hoplites (pronounced "hop-le-tees') were citizen-soldiers in ancient Greece. They were the well-regulated Militia of their day and thus, were armed, primarily with spears. Col. Jeff Cooper coined the word "hoplophobe", defined as a person who has an irrational fear of arms or armed people.

Folks are ridiculous sometimes. At some neighborhood get-togethers (I'm a Peace Officer) we sometimes get to talking about gun control issues and home protection. I've given a demonstration of how I conceal carry my full size auto pistol and what to do for self defence and stuff.

The ladies see the full size auto and cringe and take two steps back. But when I show them my Kimber Solo and how I use it as a BUG, they say something to the effect "That pistol is soooo cute. Where can I get one!"

I won't begin to tell you how they react to an AR15! :O

It's all about cosmetics. Folks are just plain dumb.

As I was salting my burger, ordering an extra-large soda and popping a pain pill, I plan to peruse the gun magazines section with much anticipation.

I once had a shirt made up that read, "Proud Hoplophile", and had to explain what it meant to a lot of people. Gun folks would see it, grin, and give me a thumbs-up. Sheeple who asked were told what it meant, and would back away with a horrified look. I would then take a step closer to them, ask them if they wanted to join my militia group, and grin. I think a few of them soiled themselves getting out of there.

I'm also guilty of putting gun magazines in front of the foo-foo magazines. I'm so ashamed!

Didja tell 'em you had a sister who was a thespian ?

Update: I was back at the same store today. Almost all of them were covered again.
I fixed that.:D

Someone was doing that in a book store that I went into today -- they put Hustler and Playboy magazines in such a fashion that those magazines covered half of of the Guns and Ammo cover -- it really got me confused and got my heart racing to see a Model 29 with breasts:D

Do these grips make my breasts look small?
