Vermont senator introduces bill on gun restrictions, assault rifle ban

I have seen some Vermont guys here welcoming New Yorkers to join them in a gun friendly State.

Sen. Philip Baruth apparently wants to change that status though.

If you are in Vermont, and you already signed some of the online petitions, do it again, then make some phone calls.

Baruth wants the magazine limitation to be FIVE.

It seems to be quite an infection you guys have up there.

I have been wondering about the revolver's - not limitation on round capacity (until now) but whether or not "speed-loaders" will be in the anti-gunners "sights" (sorry, couldn't resist that)- seems to me that if (and I mean if) this round of attempted restrictions is successful the law-makers wanting to do away with firearms will start targeting the next round of stuff to be restricted or outright done-away with.

Hmmm. According to Wiki: "Vermont has some of the least restrictive gun control laws in the country. A permit or license is not required for purchasing or carrying firearms. Concealed Carry and Open Carry of a firearm is legal over the age of 16, with those below 16 requiring parental permission." Didn't David have only 5 "shots" at Goliath?

Baruth says the bill will not affect hunters or for self-defense. He should introduce legislation that will prohibit multiple drug-influenced attackers, or maybe some type of law requiring the gun owner to "not miss" when firing their five shots at the burglars/robbers.

Tsk, tsk.... To be a politician and have those cojones, or is it ignorant bravado.....

"Despite what the overwhelming majority of Americans want, I know what is best for MY state, so here are "comprehensive and common sense" gun laws that will make us safer." I haven't been to Vermont in 30 years, but I bet this will go over like a lead balloon.

He's probably a transplant from NY! lots of Birkenstock wearing types buying ski homes and what not up there. Maybe they'l all leave here and call VT home, one can hope can't they.:D

You can open carry in VT and conceal with no permit, but God forbid you own an AR.

Is that because he can only count to "5"? Seems like we have a lot of intellectually challenged legislators across the land.

Of course, he does not understand that the 2nd Amendment is not about hunting or self-defense -- the 2nd Amendment's purpose is to secure our ability to oppose enemies foreign and domestic, a guarantee against disorder and tyranny. Military-style weapons are precisely what the Second Amendment gaurantees our right to keep and bear (hence the militia clause/langauge in the 2nd Amendment) -- this is what our legislators should be arguing -- problem is that most of the public does not really understand the wording of the 2nd Amendment.

As US Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story stated:

"The militia is the natural defence of a free country against sudden foreign invasions, domestic insurrections, and domestic usurpations of powers by rulers. (NOTE: this last clause is crucial). "The right of citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."

Friends, this is what we should be proclaiming to the public and what the NRA should make as the cornerstone of it's defense of the 2nd Amendment. The above is the real "nub" of the 2nd Amendment. Justice Story's (he was appointed to the US Supreme Court by the guy who wrote the Constitution)
interpretation is the "Holy Grail" of what the 2nd Amendment actually means. Spread this message far and wide.

For heaven's sake, the citizens of this country need to actually read and contemplate the actual langauge of the 2nd
Amendment and we need to get this message out there.

I have little patience for the academically and intellectually dishonest folks in tis great country -- we may just need to educate them. I have pledged my life and my honor to defend our Constitution. I won't see morons mis-interpret it.

I know VT has become much more liberal in recent decades. Does anyone who's up there and has some idea of the legislature's make up have any idea if this could actually gain some traction?

First New York, now Massachusetts and Vermont. This stuff doesn't happen overnight. Looks like the Obama administration has been working overtime right along, especially since he knows the assault rifle ban has no chance at the federal level.

Long story, long, wealthy New York and CT. folks (for lack of a better word, 'liberals,' well I don't want to get political, so let's use a non-incenderary word; "yo-yos"), and their ilk, have been buying vacation properties up in Vermont for decades. They love the beauty, clean air and water, low crime, lifestyle, and decent people that live there. They start off as occasional vacationers, then weekenders, then they want to stay/retire there.

The problem is, they want it to be just like where they came from. They bring the city problems, attitudes, and predjudices with them. Sadly, they will ultimately destroy what brought them there to begin with. They don't understand that it's such a clean, crime free, decent area because the morality of the people living there is 90 degrees opposite from where they came from! The same thing is happening in New Hampshire (with Boston/RI. area "yo-yos"), and Maine (again with Boston area "yo-yos"). Believe me the locals hate it, but are powerless to keep things the same. Sound familiar? This is a microcosm of our country as a whole...

They do not understand the 'country way;' the small town values, independance, work ethic, and self-reliance that people in Northern New England have had for generations. Many people in the South think that everyone 'up North' are the same, because they know about the big cities, but they are wrong. Northern New England is very similar to the South, in a lot of ways... Just as upstate New Yorkers are very similar to Northern New Englanders.

The New Yorkers/city immigrants will make Vermont the trash can/sewer from whence they came from (sorry New York City folks, but IMO that place sucks). They have the money, they will get the power. As for gun control in in VT., most city folk from New York and Boston have never even held a gun, or seen one in person, why do you think they'll want to let folks have them in Vermont when they start getting involved in the politics/power up there...? They're scared little mice, trained to fear these things.

This type of immigration really tips the scales culturally, kind of like we have seen with the massive influx of south-of-the border and Caribbean islands folks that swampled into this country. The state of Vermont is evolving into a whole other animal, just like the rest of the USA... Get used to it, it's the evolution of things, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

This whole "gun control," push is just a slow-roll to where they truly want things, gun confiscation. You are very naive if you believe otherwise. That is the goal, no guns in the hands of law abiding citizens. They just need time to indoctrinate the message. They, via the media, will vilify, marginalize, and demonize anybody, or anything, that supports 2A/guns.

Same thing that happened with the so-called political correctness, and all that has created. "Hate words," really?! (hello second grade), "Un-documented" citizen, really?! "Alternative Lifestyle," no thanks, I'm all set! God, look what they did to one of the candidates in the last POTUS election. A very decent, moral man, turned into the son of satan. These tactics work.

He/they know full well what the 2nd stands for, I respectfully disagree with your statement.

So true, they are just crafting the message. Say it enough times, and trust me, people will believe it, they will begin to view things differently; know it as the truth. This is especially true when 'elected officials' say it, or other people in trusted positions say it (Media, news anchor-celebrity-guy/gal, etc.).

This is all part of the strategy. These folks know how to manipulate people/public opinion.

ColJag, keep up the good work/effort. All this evil work needs opposition. We need to insist on being represented, and that our politicians uphold the Constitution that they are sworn to protect.

I've lived in Maine pretty much my whole life and dmar is right on the money with his observations.
Well put my friend!

sounds like the eastern part of my state

The sleeping Giant is going to have to wake up, stand up, and say "We will defend the second amendment" by what ever means it takes....political, legal, and if none of that works......use your imagination. Not to be infringed...they can not take what we will not give. Thomas Jefferson was a smart man and we need to listen to what he said many years ago...it still hold true.
