Ok here's another what some may think is a silly question. I just picked up on of these last week and haven't had a chance to take her out to the range yet. S&W says to only shoot ammo "Specifically designated for use in you firearm" the Sport says 5.56. My question is can I shoot .223 out of the Sport and not damage the firearm? I ask because looking on the S&W web-site some of their other AR's show 5.56mm NATO or .223 but the sport only shows 5.56mm NATO.

You can shoot .223 from a rifle CHAMBERED for 5.56 but SOULD NOT USE 5.56 in a .223 spec'ed weapon.

The bbl. won't be damaged, the chamber of a 5.56 is capable of handling the HIGHER PRESSURES generated by 5.56 loads.

No disrespect taken.

I'm well aware of the salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing process case hardening process known as Tenifer (Glock) and Melonite (S&W).

The issue is that the Tenifer/Melonite treatment isn't commonly performed on AR barrels. S&W is the only manufacturer I'm aware of that offers it.

If I'm going to build a 300 BLK, .308, etc... I want the properties that a chrome lined barrel will provide.

S&W does sell a M&P 15 upper chambered in 300 Whisper that uses a 4140 steel, Melonite treated barrel. It can chamber the 300 BLK, but I want a barrel specifically chambered for 300 BLK.

...but these plans are a long way out. Before I dump money on my "dream" build, I want to have a bunch more fun with my two AR 5.56 platforms first. The ammo is much more affordable. :D

Bushmaster does as well. I own a Bushmaster ACR and it has a Melonite coated barrel. Keep in mind this is the gun that Bushmaster/Remington are submitting for the US military trials to replace the m16/m4. My ACR is VERY accurate, more so than previous AR's I've owned. I think if Remington puts a melonite coated barrel on a gun designed for military use then it's more than adequate for my use.

Saw two sports at the show today, one was 865.00, the other was 899.00, marked down from 999.00......

Crazy pricing!

Looked at some of the beloved Colts, 1299.00. I was surprised at them and the play they have between upper and lowers. Most slop of any AR I'd tried yet. Felt a little better about the slight slop that my 15A has, and my 870.00 price I paid.

Found a nice MOE Core15 AR, just didn't have enough cash, it was only 735.00 tax included.

Used AR prices were through the roof, n they looked well used. Lots of new stuff seemed pretty good, save for a few gouging dealers.

When I bought my whisper, I was 8th in line to pay, by the time I paid, there were at least 12 more forms to buy added to the pile. This dealer is pretty good, treasure chest gun shop from mcpherson, KS. I've probably bought 6 guns from him at the shows over the past two years.

Gun shows are kinda funny, I always go looking for a Sr1911, never find one and last 3 times I bought something that I'd never considered before.

I saw one sport at the gun show today. It was $695.00 tax included. Only real deal I saw was Glock 19 Gen 4 @ $499. As for the Ruger SR1911, non to be found. I ordered one 2 months ok, and I'm still waiting on it to come in.

Can you post a link showing where Bushmaster/Remington is using Melonite Processing, remember it is not a coating but is a process that changes the outer layer of the material. It is not like chrome plating where they make the barrel oversized and then plate it and follow that with a reamer. With the melonite they make it the size they want it and then go and process it where they change the outer .010 layer of the material on the molecular level. I would really like to read that. I read this week that the Corp is going back to the 1911, I havent seen them make that smart of a decision in a while and now this. Someone out there is showing common sense!!!

I've had a SR1911 on order at my LGS since last July.....

First post. Anyway also my first AR. Shot it twice at an indoor 25yard range (where I'm at outdoor ranges are not close by). Functioned perfect. I didn't want rails all over the place. No offense to all the mall ninjas :), just not my thing. I also found out I don't like telescoping stocks, ordered an A1 sized repro from Fulton Armory. Feels and looks much better to me now. Also don't like the fingerswell on the pistol grip. Found an old plain one on suckbay. Also purely aesthetically I like the straight barrel without the cutout for a grenade launcher. There you go, my totally subjective newbie review.

Welcome aboard, I'm fairly new to ARs as well. I respect your desire to keep it simple...not always easy to do with all the options available. I'm already feeling the desire to build my own, but my finances need to recover for a bit...at least that's what I keep telling myself ;)

California compliant m&p 15 sport flash hider removal advice?

Hello,
I am new to this forum and only have one question. I plan to install a free float handguard onto my M&P sport and a new flash hider. Does the CA compliant model have a pin holding the flash hinder? Is the flash hider welded/sodered requiring me taking it to a gun smith?

Wow you resurrected a real old thread, Nope its not pinned on but is tough to get loose! I am pretty sure that I am correct. But I dont live in the PRoK,
Welcome to the forum! You can start your own thread and I promise everyone here is helpful and accepts new people very well!! :D

Love my sport with a passion. I've competed in 2 gun with it, taken carbine classes with it, and competed in tactical gunfighter matches with it. I've reached out and dinged steel at 300 yards using cheap Russian ammo and a Primary Arms micro dot sight.
