Of all the AR/M-4 choices out there why did you choose a S&W? I shot my fair share of M-16A1 & A2's in the military. We used Colt & H&R.

I'd like to know too. S&W and Colts are demanding a premium premium, ESPECIALLY in today's market.

Honest answer? Because I could get the M&P Sport for $650 and the Colt was over $1000. By the time I purchased mine, there were enough reviews on line that I knew what I would be getting for my money.

If you move up the S&W line and buy a rifle that is more in line price wise to a Colt 6920, you should find that you are getting more features, like quad rails, or Magpul furniture, than you would on the basic 6920 for the same money.

This was all true prior to recent events. I haven't bothered with staying current on prices lately, since I am not buying in this market.

I bought S&W because I got my M&PT on sale 6 months for under 800 bucks. No other rifle could come close to offering what this model offers at that price point. No matter, as I would have paid the non-sale price of 1000 as I still think it would have been a good deal even at that price.

Whether you chose Colt or S&W it is about what YOU feel is best for you. I think you get more value from S&W, but that's just me. At the end of the day, the "better" rifle would ultimately be decided by the type of round used and capabilities of the shooter, not the rifle itself.

Buy which ever one makes you happy, it is your money and your weapon. I find it kind of foolish to come to a forum such as this and ask which one is better, of course the members here will say the S&W, after all it is what we own and why we are here instead of being in a Colt forum.

I bought a S&W after shooting my nephews OR. I to have used M-16's in the Marine Corps, there werent M4's then. It was a fine rifle and far more accurate than the Colts, Bushmasters and DPMS's that friends were letting me shoot. It appeared that way to me. When I saw the price on a Sport, I about flipped and within a month and a half I had one.

After shooting my sport for a few weeks I decided I would try a test. I borrowed my Dads Colt HBar and had a friend bring over his reasonably new Bushmaster. We have a private range and I put targets up. Then side by side compared the Sport to the other two. Me pulling the trigger, using the same ammo out of the same boxes and lot numbers.

The Sports groups were 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the others. I had been reading about 5R rifling and how it is available in many top tier and competition bolt action rifles. There are two sides to that story also but I do know that in the S&W M&P15 rifles. If you can get the ones with the melonite, 1:8 5R barrel, you will have a rifle that is surprisingly accurate at distances where a lot of 16" barreled rifles start falling off. S&W 1:9 barrel is very accurate also. My rifles were well made, quality components, the tolerances on them were very tight. Unlike rifles that have a bit of play between the upper and the lower.

I set mine up to Pdog hunt, with free floated barrels and big glass. I regularly shot Pdogs at 200+yrds and even some out to 250yrds. Dependable nice long range varmint hunters. The excelled shooting my handloads with worked up loads for the rifle. Handloads definately increased the accuracy without any reliability problems. But I handload for all the rifles I have owned or own and that brings any gun up a notch in my opinion.

The trigger is nice compared to a lot of the other manufacturers also. It also polishes up and works very very nice. Sad to say with the ongoing legislation issues I sold mine a couple of weeks ago to some guy at a gunshow.
Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

Why did I buy my Sport

I got divorced and my ex hated me having firearms so I had a 20 year dry spell so after her sorry behind was kicked to the curb I took my next tax return to the LGS and told her I wanted to buy a AR-15. She had several types on the wall but recommended the sport and I noticed no FA or dust cover on it and wondered why, she said they was not needed for civilian sporting use and just increased the cost for little benefit. The sport is a more accurate and has a match grade barrel with a progressive twist.
I have since then put about 5-6 k thru her and have had no problems so I then purchased the 15-22 from smith and have put approximately 10-12k thru her without any problems and just purchased a smith lower and upper in the 300 blackout to have a " black gun " I have been really impressed with the accuracy and dependability of smith rifles.

Geez, so the OP said he has shot a Colt, and that some how makes him or his post a troll event??

Hell I have shot Colt's, and yes I have even owned a Colt and god forbid I carried a 1911 for 4 years daily.. omg the thought of it..

I was on the Colt forum a couple of days ago, the Colt flufferboys are enough to make you sick, but it's really no different anywhere else..

The OP's question is a Very good question..

Why I bought a S&W M&P15or..

Price, performance, reliability, manufactured by a top American gun manufacture.

In researching the S&W I found the general thoughts on the weapon to be, it is Highly reliable, shoots most all ammo with no issues, It is very accurate out of the box when compared to many other makes, It is a reasonably priced AR, the OR model internally has several advantages over some other makes, and it is manufactured by one of America's leading gun makers.

I like it.. I also have my sights set on a new Colt Mustang.. Why?

Because I like it,

And the last time I check this is America and I can like whatever I like..

Oh yeah I forgot, I actually own and have shot a Glock, I must be bound for Troll hell...lol

Please don't let the sisters swat my knuckles with their rulers...

ONEYEOPN,thank you very much! That is why I came here. That was the kind of replies I was hoping to hear. I was merely stating that I shot a Colt and H&R in the military. I can't even afford ammo for an M-4/AR. I'm disabled and was surfing other parts of the forum and decided to ask why you chose a S&W. If some of you members feel insecure about your manhood and need to lash out please don't take it out on me.
Thanx ONEYEOPN! Semper Fi!

For me it was price, quality, and performance. I was hard pressed to find a negative review about the sport, and most claimed it to be reliable, quite accurate and with a decent trigger, which turned out to be correct. The lifetime warranty also helped make my decision. These are the reasons I chose my S&W M&P 15 sport. Hope thhis helps. Cheers

I've mentioned this before here, but I had every intention of buying a Colt when I walked into my LGS last year. In fact I was only in the market for an AR after seeing an ad that said Colt was making a CA compliant model.

But my LGS didn't carry any Colts and when I asked why I was told that it wasn't worth the hassle to them or their customers of a misinformed LEO accusing someone of having a listed (read: Banned in CA) lower.

They did have a nice Noveske N4 which I took a look at. They also had the Sport which was almost $500 cheaper. I asked about the lack of FA and dust cover and was told that for range use they were not necessary, and that he (the sales guy) personally prefers slick-sided uppers for competition guns as there's less protrusions to snag.

So on a leap of faith (I hadn't visited this forum for over a year after having bought a 15-22 in 2010) I bought the Sport. My first trip to the range let men know that I made a great decision. Accuracy and reliability was excellent.

My only previous experience with an AR platform was in basic training in the USAF where we shot a 22LR converted M16 for marksmanship qualification. We spent an hour learning how to disassemble and reassemble it, and a morning at the range firing off 100 rounds of 22 LR. :)

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my posts: my sympathies are with you, sir. ;)

Onward and upward...

Thank you,sir. ;)

BTW,I went to gunbroker.com,and OMG! I thought the S&W sold for $800-$900 originally! Go over there and see how much people are asking for them!

Yeah that is the crazy part, but S&W has put so much quality into this line of rifles. Right now there are people out there trying to make a fast buck. Almost everything in this catagory is so overpriced. When I got my Sport is was around $640, now you see them up to $2000 and that is absolutely insane!!

I knew H&R made M14's, but I was unaware that they made M-16's of any kind.

I'm sorry MS, I did not see your post. Yes, H&R made the M-16A1. I qualified with one in basic training back in 1984. If you did not see it stamped on it you would never know.

What's even crazier is what people are paying for them right now...
