Considering a 3rd gen - 4006

S&W 4006 and 4003

That is a very nice looking 4006, and in that condition, I think you paid a fair price. The mags and box make it even better. I have a 4006TSW and a 4003 right now. The 4003 being the aluminum framed version. As you can see, the 4003 is in "project mode" but will be back on the range soon. Both guns were police trade-ins from Gunbroker. The 4006TSW was like brand new. The 4003, not so much. I work on it, here and there, trying to get the two-tone look with the black frame. All I need are some new Trijicons and it will be ready for re-assembly. I have nothing but praise for all the S&W 3rd Gen autos. They work well and are still pretty reasonably priced in this otherwise crazy world of ridiculous gun prices.

I have two 3rd gen S&W pistols, a 5946 and a 3953TSW. I love them both and I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. They're virtually indestructible'

My on-duty pistol is 4506-1 and my back-up u/c is the CS45. We still have a following of the Gen3 pistols in LAPD. It is a dependable, all metal pistol that still holds its own to the plastic Glock

And.... I believe with all of the acolades we're seeing here about just how popular the 4006 is/was with LE (self evident by so much of them still in use today) and others, it's been a suspicion of mine that S&W quit making 3rd Gens because, their vaunted M&P Polypistol that was meant to be god's gift to LE (sales and a Glock killer) was being badly overshadowed by an old school, metal framed traditional DA pistol, so the competition needed to go.

Lou - that looks like a really nice 4006 that you got for a fair price - it actually looks as new. I have one myself but not as nice looking as yours. I hope you have fun shooting it. It kinda sucks though not being able to find ammo with all this craziness.

4006 is a great gun, I have two, one with fixed site and one with adjustable site. The two frames are a little different from each other. The one has a sharp edge under the trigger guard that presses into the middle finger while in recoil. The other frame has a different machine cut similar to my 4506-1. Was there a frame change in the 4006 run of pistols?

speaking of ammo for my 4006..........

It's killing me that I've owned this pistol for over a week and haven't shot it yet. Just too much on the calendar between work and family. :( I hope to get to the range this Sunday.

In the meantime, I have an ammo question for you 3rd gen S&W owners out there......

I reload most everything I shoot in all my guns, so I'm planning on taking this pistol out and jumping right in with my cast LSWC reloads that I use in my Glock 23. Based on your collective experiences, should I expect any problems cycling the LSWC bullet profile through this pistol? Down the road, I can always look into different cast bullet profiles if necessary for reliable function. But I'm curious about what your experiences have been, specifically with cast bullets, in the 4006.

Thanks,
Lou

Love my 4006 and is very reliable.Back in the early 90s i read a artical and the author claimed to have shot over 1000 rnds from factory to reloads and the gun never jammed once and thats what got me hooked on the 4006.

Lou, if you haven't already, Google the Smith and Wesson Standard Catalog from 2006 and check out page 304 for a description of the 4006 and its various product codes for different years and features, as well as a (now outdated, probably) table of values for the pistol in various conditions.

"snip"

Are you saying you can read the catalog online in pdf form or something? All I seem to get from a google search is listings to buy the book.

Thanks

I've found that Google searching particular S&W models will include in the results a link to a page ffor that model from the Catalog, along with a bunch of other pages (not all of them) as well.

Here, for instance, is a sample from a search I did for the Shorty Forty. Hope I am not violating any Forum rules by posting this.

I'm no computer guru, and I don't know why this works this way, but it just does.:)

Well that's cool! I'll give that a whirl.

Thanks.
