Unlike my other handguns, when I insert a loaded magazine into my M&P the slide closes and loads a round. Is this normal for the M&P?

Ur slamming it in and knocking the slide release loose personally I think of it as a benefit

Thanks for the replies. I just thought it was a bit weird as it was the first gun I ever had this happen.

It's "normal" but it still doesn't make it right. I HATE it when this happens. Its a 50/50 chance that I'll have this "autoforward" behavior on reloads. In some instances I'm not slamming the mag in with what I consider unusual force.

If you release the slide by pulling down on the slide catch, you might have worn it down to the point of less purchase on the slide. It's better to release the slide by pulling it back and letting the slide catch lower on its own.

If you're slamming it in at all, that's enough to "slam load" a round. There's nothing wrong with it doing that, it just removes a step from the reload process. The warning is there as a CYA for S&W in case someone didn't realize that this chambered a round.

Have never used the slide stop to release a locked back slide. I always have done the overhand grab and rack. Still haven't figured out how to align the planets and make this happen every time. I have purposely slammed and slapped the bejezus out of it trying to make it happen. Then in the mildest of reloads it autoforwards and effs with me.

My best guess so far as that when firing to slide lock, there is probably just the tinyest amount of the catch holding the slide open sometimes. A little jostle from the reload sets it off.

When ur slamming it u swipe the release just make it a habit and ull b that much quiker reloading :)

Perhaps it is happening when a certain magazine locks the slide open, and other magazines more fully engage the slide lock. That's worth investigation. It is my experience that machines don't do things randomly, we just fail to notice what is causing the inconsistency.

Didn't try that. I might. But there is so many people noticing this I thinks it is probably something with the design than with one of my mags.

Now let me cook your noodle.

My M&P has started to release the slide when FIRMLY rapping the base of the EMPTY magwell. No mag in it.

Around 8k rounds thru 9mm M&P 4.25". Gun has broken in very nicely.

At a training class this weekend and following safety steps pulled and removed mags during instruction. Lock slide back to show instructor and partner during drill. While going thru reload drill found that my gun will now do it with no mag in it at all.

Dont know what to think. Dont see a problem. Its only going to lock back on last round fired. Reload still occurs and I still force myself to rack the slide and not use the slide stop{ those FTF drills do pay off}. Checked the slide stop when I got home and doesnt seem to be worn. Compared it to another M&P at the house looks fine. Was wondering if a new slide stop was in my future LOL.

All your doing is bumping the slide loose each time you do it.

Just remember to watch your barrel discipline at all times, which we're doing anyway.

Yes, it has nothing to do with the magazine whatsoever. It will tend to do it more easily, the more the recoil spring wears. It's all about physics. ;)

If it worries anyone too bad, just leave a round short in the mag and load it with the slide forward at the range. Then just slingshot it forward when your ready.:D

That's one less round on a new(er) tight mag. :D :D :D
