Bidding on a 686-2 6" w/ box, no papers. Guesstimate of what's a fair offer? It is at least excellent if not better by the pictures. Think I'm really going to have to ante up to get this one. Any input appreciated. Thanks guys.

The question is; "How much are you willing to spend?" According to answers to this type of post, I've overspent by $200 or bought early by 18 months on several of my GunBroker purchases. On the other hand, I now own the S&W that I was seeking.

It is your personal decision, not a popularity contest, peer group approval, or a committee decision. If you want the gun, put on your big boy pants, and buy it. Fair value is $450 to $750 depending several factors, most of which depend on the other person's opinion. No one on this Forum will ever question want vs. need of owning another S&W. This is an Enabler's Organization.

Two 686 6" for consignment sale at my local g.s.. Both $549.

That sounds about right to me for a clean 6-inch 686, give or take. My friend bought the last 686 6-inch I have seen at a gun show for some time and he paid $575 (haggled down from $625) - nice gun with factory target stocks, no box or docs.

You know, I knew this one was going to take "big boy pants". S&W is showing $829 for a new 686. You might be able to buy one new for a little less, maybe not. Somehow I don't want a new one. So we'll just have to see how big my pants are. Thanks for all the input. I think resale on an older gun would be higher if I ever wanted to sell it. I still don't think the locks are going over that well.

recently picked up a 686-3, 8&3/8 inch barrel with factory cuts for scope rings (reason I bought it) for $500 plus tax, no box, hope that helps with recent pricing

Just got a 686 no dash, no box, no papers with a supposed 30 rounds down the pipe at LGS for $600. It looked so purty............Dan.

Well, I ain't gonna get this one for $600 but I do get a box. Whoo ho!! I'm afraid a box doesn't do much for me but whatever. I get it or I don't get it. We'll see. It's kinda like Engineer1911 said in his post above. Fun, ain't it?

I felt terribly bad.....serious buyers remorse over a gun I recently purchased for $900 that I could have purchased for $550 just a few months ago. UNTIL....two people bought the same gun over the next week-or-so and one paid $1175.....another went for $1325. So much for buyers remorse.:)

$550-$575 is tops around where I live for a NL 686, but never let the price of a tank of gas for your pick-up truck stand in the way of a gun you really want. Many of us have overpaid....and knew it.

$550 give or take is a good starting point. However, is it pretty much what you are looking for, and how often to you see other specimens in like condition etc? I always feel more comfortable in over paying when it's ftf and I can handle the gun and examine it closely.

Well, the way I am is that when I see a gun, or anything I want, I will pretty much ante up an get it. Now, I do have limits about how far I will go but at my age, 67 in 4 months (if the Lord allows me), what does a few $$$$ matter? I don't always buy the very top of the line in anything but I NEVER buy the bottom end either. So we'll see about this 686-2. It's one beautiful revolver and it will be my only L frame. Thank all you guy for your comments.

I got it. Will post pictures when I receive it. Paid way too much. I don't care. It's a beautiful piece. My first L frame.

Congratulations on your success! When the gun shows and you happily have it in your hands I'll bet concerns about the price will soon be set aside. Enjoy your 686. :)

As promised. Won't receive it until probably Wednesday or Thursday of next week but I thought I'd just post some of the pictures off GunBroker. Can't help it, I do excited when I acquire a new piece. I hope it's as beautiful as the pictures depict. Forget the exorbitant price I paid, it's mine now. My first L frame. Hope it's a good shooter. What's somebody's best birth date for it? Serial Number AYZ4***. I never have much luck at looking up serial numbers.

That's not good news. How could that be and what's different about it?
What's your advice?
