Man, don't do that to a novice. Scared the **** out of me. I even fired off an email to the seller asking him about it. In looking at my S&W catalog I couldn't see any difference. Are you trying to cause me to have a coronary?

Dwp, you have to make allowances for Cajunlawyer.

Some people who have shall we say "paranoid tendencies" will get upset at what they think may be a hacked gun because they notice a difference in color and polish between the barrel and frame of 686s (and other stainless revolvers). It was there on many of the first 629s I saw and has been common since.

I think you should send CL a bill for your emotional distress.

That's a pretty 686. My 686 is my favorite revolver that I shoot. The L-frames are just big enough to soak up recoil but small enough to fit my hands.

Yeah, if Cajun Lawyer really is a lawyer I might be inclined not to put him on retainer. He might tell me he could get me off knowing all the while that I'd be convicted. Shame on him. I can take a little ribbin' but I do tend to be particular on my guns, especially with the price I paid for this one.

OMG well I am a novice and felt awful that the barrel might be wrong...nearly gave me a heart attack and it wasnt even my purchase! I was just telling a friend about it. At least now i know about one of the forum's pranksters

I was "watching" that auction because the number of bids caught my eye so I know what you paid but I won' t tell

Auctions are funny. Some weeke that gun would go for half what you paid and on others, you wouldn't be able to touch it.

It's a VERY clean example and will be laser beam accurate.

CL's "joke" would have been better played on someone he knew but it was pretty good.

He's just mad because in a few days you will be firing off some hot ones at the range while he fires off bad pranks here on the forum

Congrats. Thats a solid gun and what you paid is not out of line at all.

Dwp them there big boy pants fit right nice. You'll need a belt to hold up your britches when packing that piece. Very nice revolver in excellent condition.

You have now started down that slippery L-frame slope. One down seven to go; Blue and stainless in 4 barrel lengths too keep it simple. You cannot stop at ONE regardless of age -- think of the grandchildren or nephews and nieces.

If you like it and are happy with it, you can never pay too much. (I just bought a 4" 686-2 a few weeks ago and paid a lot more than the prices mentioned in this thread, but i'm happy with it)

Yeah, all those things are true. The price I paid is relative I suppose. I think I paid too much and several times during the bidding I started to let somebody else have it. But I kept looking at how beautiful it was and decided I would just see how much more they wanted it than I did. So, it is what it is. The pictures indicate that it is in great shape. I should be throwing some rounds downrange by Friday, possible this coming Monday. Thank everyone for their interest, including CL. By the way, everyone please pray for the tornado victims in Oklahoma. What a terrible disaster.

Great looking revolver. If you are happy with it that's all that matters. That 's the kind of revolver that will shoot .357 ammo all day. Enjoy it!

...S&W is showing $829 for a new 686. You might be able to buy one new for a little less, maybe not. Somehow I don't want a new one. So we'll just have to see how big my pants are. Thanks for all the input. I think resale on an older gun would be higher if I ever wanted to sell it. I still don't think the locks are going over that well.

W/ this paragraph, I think you put everything that matters, in the proverbial nutshell.

Sell it in one year, & I doubt you will lose a dime on it. Not sure the same holds true for a new model. Congrats on the acquisition - what ever you paid.

Dollar value aside, as others have pointed out, you are probably in trouble now. L frame S&W's tend to become obsessions...

Thanks, GCF. I've come to "peace", so to speak, about what I paid for it. Supposedly, if you can believe the USPS tracking system, it's supposed to be at my LGS today. Yipeeeee! Somehow, knowing the price of a new one, I don't feel bad at all. I just feel more comfortable with an older version. Thanks for your input.

Really nice gun and good pictures. Sometimes you may pay more than you intend but it doesn't take long to get over it. As a rule of thumb, never pay any attention to a lawyer unless you need one.

Beautiful piece! A 686-1 was my first handgun ever. I think it was 1987. It looked just like that. It's not as pretty nowadays. It's had some use.

Well, from all the positive replies I've received I'm beginning to really think I made a wise choice. Can't wait to get to the range with it. Who knows? Maybe tomorrow if it arrives today.
