Is it just my advanced age? Probably.

Plus one to what Mulepacker has said.
I live in a small town of 2500 people in a mostly Rural farm
and agriculture area. Sure there's an occasional home or vehicle
gets broken into by thieves or an arrest made on some druggies.
I don't leave my doors unlocked when not home but i don't have
to fear some gang confronting me nor do i feel the need to have to
arm myself to the teeth to go to the local post office.
I refuse to live my life in fear of everyone i come
across being a person out to do me harm. Lifes too short to be
paranoid all the time. I don't have all the answers and maybe
some nut might come up and shoot me today as i'm mowing my yard
but i wont have 2 or 3 guns on my person at all times.
To each his own.

It has nothing to do with fear my friend. It has to do with what we reasonably think that we need to protect ourselves effectively in our environment and our lifestyle.

Point taken, did'nt mean to offend.
Everyone has their own comfort levels and need to
do what they feel is nessecary and that is cool with me.
Everyone needs to do what "they" must in the environment
they are in.
I work on the East side of INDY and shootings there are
commonplace. You can bet i always have (something)
close by EVERY time i go to work.

There's being cautious and then there's being a ninja. Carry two guns for all I care. That's being cautious.

Being the young man I heard in Walmart bragging to his buddy that he was currently carrying three guns and 100 rounds of ammo is being an mall ninja.

I love that term.:)

Good post.

And this is such a great forum .

I cant say how many times I have heard or been asked " Well if I only have 17 rounds, what happens if I am attacked by 20 people shooting ..."

You are going to need to hope you have a company of United States Marines close to save you then, is something along my general reply.

But overall I think it is about what you are comfortable with, and also your personal comfort too . I have had a 38 snub and 5 rounds and been very comfortable with that. For years I had a Python, or a Detective Special , and never felt undergunned.

As for knives, I concur they are tools. I did however carry a quality folder everywhere in the world in my Haliburton aluminum briefcase as a defense tool too. Back when that was legal for airline carry.

Funny you should say that . For a year or so I have thought about what might be a "lawn mower gun." ;)

predators

Hard to say how much fire power will be needed at any given moment. It usually comes at an unexpected time and not always from two legged predators.

I always felt comfortable with my 642 and no extra ammo in my pocket until 5:00 one morning a year and a half ago. I went out back to check on moaning noises expecting to find a goat with a leg caught in a fence.

What I found was three coyotes in with my goats. I knew right away I was under gunned, not prepared and needed a shotgun.

Afterwards my mind quickly rolled to the fact that two-legged predators often come in packs just like the four legged ones do and am I really prepared for that?

From that day on I've never felt fully prepared with just a 5-shooter in my pocket. I don't carry a shotgun everywhere but it probably wouldn't be bad idea.

Extra ammo always and a 2nd gun usually.

AT LEAST 2 guns!!!
IF you only have one gun and just happen to miss 17 times (hey - it happens) then once you throw your empty gun at the bad guy whatagonnado if you don't have a second gun?

Sometimes y'all just don't think things through...........

My guess is that there are many more folks with concealed carry licenses that rarely if ever actually carry a single gun, than there are folks who carry two or more guns. I read on this and other forums of people who have a loaded gun in every room of the house, carry when at home at all times, and say that they practice extreme vigilance 24/7, i.e., expecting an attack all the time. I would find it hard to live that way. Of course I have a house gun, reasonably available but in a GunVault so I don't have to worry about it when my grandchildren visit. I also take a gun with me when I am out of state (unfortunately I reside in IL), and for me that is enough to feel relatively secure. To each their own.

I've carried at least one pocketknife, usually two, every day for almost seventy years.

Well those thangs is probly gettin' wore out after seventy years.

This might be presumptuous, but I think what the OP is referring to are the forums that have "EDC Threads" where they post pics of what they carry on a daily basis.

Some of these guys carry a couple of guns, multiple reloads, pens designed to be used as weapons, huge locking knives that are useless for anything other than fighting a gang of charging Mau-Maus, a multitool, heavy plastic knuckle duster things with spikes on them, a couple of flashlights, OC spray, baton/kubotan, an Altoids box stuffed with things McGyver would find superfluous. Along with a phone, wallet, keys. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. How do they carry it all? Some of the kit I've seen would fill up a musette bag.

There's an interesting thread here lately--"What did you carry"--about what soldiers carried while on duty. Let's just say most were going a little lighter than all that.

I think part of the reason is that some of these guys just enjoy putting this stuff together. Of course some seem to enjoy it a bit too much...

Like others have said, carry what makes you comfortable wherever you happen to be going or what you happen to be doing. And don't forget the most important tools of all--a pair of eyes and a functioning brain.

Well on duty I carry a G19, S&W Model 49, a Benchmade folding knife, pepper spray, Surefire flashlight, two magazines for my reload, two sets of handcuffs, a straight stick - 24" in length, a taser, body armor,,a radio three ballpoint pens (those see more use than anything else), a notepad, a digital pocket recorder and a cell phone. Oh and sunglasses and a hat because I'm going bald and sunburn easily.

Off duty I typically carry my G26 or G19, a reload, folding knife and a cell phone. That's it.

Everybody carries what they think they will need.

I don't see any reason to carry a reload for a self defense gun. If there are more than one person I won't have time to pull the trigger more than 5 or 6 times and I sure won't have time to reload. If I end up dead I won't need to reload and if I am alive the law will take my gun and I don't see any reason to also give them shells. Larry

I am with the few minimalists here and only carry when on a road trip. I live in the country on purpose, by choice, where having your mail box smashed by a baseball bat wielded from a car load of teenagers at night is about the only crime. There is no time of year you cannot hear random gunfire somewhere in the surrounding countryside. No one is unarmed and I guess that is public knowledge and a deterrent in itself. I know I wouldn't want to be creeping around antibody's property out here.

I know what you mean, some are armed to the teeth going down to the grocery store on a bright Sunday afternoon. While others just carry a snubbie. It is all just a matter of personal preferance I would say.
Me I mostly just carry my S&W 60 snubbie/ one speed strip.. But If I was going to hang around at 3 am in downtown Chicago or Detriot, then I would be armed with a 30 rd AR Pistol hanging around my shoulder ! Just flashing it to them would make most BG's wet their pants. :D:D

I am older guy now also me and my wife live in a Condo which is pretty safe and private, we also usually hit the hay around 10 PM or so .. So really there is no need for me to be armed to the teeth any more. It is each man's choice as long as it is legal.

I always carry my 442 in my pocket and some other gun with reloads, plus a knife. As said above, the knife is a tool, it gets used almost daily. The reasoning for 2 guns, mechanical things sometimes fail, I also know of an officer who died trying to reload his gun, a 19, instead of going to his bug. Guy put a hole in him as he was about to close the cylinder. Odds of it happening to me, really slim, but who carries a gun out any day and expects a shooting to occur? We'd all stay home.

I do admit to packing lighter for some situations, for example shorts and a tee-shirt, a 442 in the pocket, my 640 pro OWB and a couple of speed loaders sure are light to carry and easy to conceal. It may not be 17 rounds but it goes bang and it finds the 10 ring at 10 yds.

For me though, I'm more concerned with the man behind the gun than the number of guns, most of the mall ninjas can't hit a bull in the derriere at 5yds, I'll take the old codger who rings the bell every time.

I'm a LEO, live in the country, and regularly travel with a 12 ga. pump stored under the rear bench seat of my pickup. I just like knowing it's there if I need it. I don't live in a high crime area, but the small city 10 miles from my doorstep has it's fair share of violence, so I always carry concealed for myself, and to help protect others when I'm not wearing a duty belt and uniform.

I completely agree that carrying (or what you carry) is all a matter of personal choice. A couple of members have posted that they carry a high intensity flashlight, and I do the same. A good little tactical flashlight can temporarily blind a would be attacker, allowing time to escape a threat (flash and move!) As a last resort, some of the newer models have serrated edges that can be used with a hammer fist blow to gouge or tear flesh in a close quarters situation.

I have given up on most forums do to the mall ninja syndrome, which in some cases crosses into paranoia. These folks are unable or unwilling to listen to common sense. Sadly these are the folks that the public at large equate as all gun owners.

I think for way too many of them it's less paranoia than "See what a bad-a** I am? I am armed to the teeth and then some--look on me and tremble!" Which of course is the surest sign of an ego full of great gaping holes.

And you're all too right, these clowns are often the yardsticks (or dipsticks) by whom all gun owners are judged by those who don't know better.

MODERATION in all things is the key.
I carry a Ruger lcr .357 with ct laser grips- no reloads -just the 5 rounds in it, and a nice pocket knife which is more tool than weapon.
Where is the common sense???
Did it all go away when we passed 2000 ???

I have to say I've been amazed and delighted by the response this thread has received. The range of opinions, almost all very respectfully and thoughtfully stated, has been impressive. It's also confirmed for me what someone posted early on: the is a very civilized and civil forum.
