Accurizing the 15-22?

I think a reasonable way to go is to make sure the barrel nut tight, do the 15min trigger job, and try some different kinds of ammo. Defintely try Aguila Match Rifle.

Or... you could do a major upgrade.

I bought a new fluted and threaded barrel, matched receiver and bolt. Picked up a Boyd's stock and DIP metal kit. I removed the Magpul sights & PA MicroDot, then mounted a Bushnell 6500 Elite 2.5-16x with Badger Ordnance 30mm rings... and a Harris SBRM bipod. Shoots a lot better now and noise from the action has been reduced considerably.

Before....

After...

For what you'd pay to get that done, just pick up a 10-22 and be happy.
And really, how much more free floated can you make a 15-22?
While a Mini-14 is no match for an AR the silly wanna-be 15-22 is no match for a 10-22. CZ 455 is a tack driver but if semi-auto is your game then a 10-22 will not let you down. I thought everybody had a 10-22.. . ..

Yea, I have one ... it's been shot twice in the last year. If I want accurate I shoot my MOA 77/22. If I want fun, I shoot the 15-22.

If you don't like the 15-22, what are you doing hanging around this forum? :D

I believe the purpose of the S&W15-22 is to replicate the M4 so one can practice M4 style with less noise, on an indoor pistol range (if need be), with relatively inexpensive ammo. It works great with a sound supressor too.

I wonder that last part myself. I have 10/22's and a pair of 15-22's and I rarely shoot the Rugers anymore.

Ive had a 10/22 and they are great but I prefer my 15/22. For me, its just as accurate and a lot more fun to shoot. FYI, I free floated my barrel and couldn't tell any difference in accuracy. I think it has a lot more to do with the guy behind the trigger than any fancy mods or doo dads. That being said, and Im no expert, my 15-22 will shread the center out of a paper target all day long.

You want accuracy with a 22? No problem. Buy a CZ 455 or Ruger 77/22.

You got that right. I recently picked up a CZ 455 Varmint with the Boyds Tacticool stock and I'm easily getting sub-dime sized groups at 50 yards using Eley Club ammo. As others have mentioned, the 15-22 is a fun plinking gun. If you want more accuracy out of it, it may be just easier just to buy something else for that purpose instead.

I don't. I use a Remington 597 that has close to $1000 invested in it. Outshoots 10/22 like nobody's business. Even the bolt gun shooters have not beat me in the last 3 years of rimfire metallic silhouette. Off a benchrest it shoots to a .5 MOA at 100y using CCI Standard Velocity. Would go even better with Eley or Lapua match ammo.

What the 15-22 is great at is speed shooting. Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear as they say is not going to happen. Right tool for the right job I always say.

With a C/P 4-16X40AOIR scope, a NcStar bipod, and Winchester 36g HV HP; groups between 2 and 4 inches at 100 yards. I shake a lot.

S&W M&P 15 22 MOE with no mods. I am working on 1 inch or less groups consistently. Have gotten a few so far, but not consistently.

It is in the original post. at 100 yards

I agree with trying different ammo.

I have a Remington 541T that loves Wolf, and my Anschutz loves CCI standard.

With a 20x scope I consistently keep groups under 1/2" at 100 yards (with no wind).

With the 15/22 I don't even try to be accurate. It frustrates me to no end to get fliers. It's a fun gun to shoot a lot of ammo through, but accurate it isn't.

As for a 10/22, I like mine just fine, but my neighbor had one he put a bull barrel on and it was a real shooter. I don't know if he bedded the action.
