The following was sent out by The AKC today.

It's seems a bit hypocritical of PETA, you know, given their name, mission statement, history of over-the-top behavior and all!

Dear Dog Lover,

The American Kennel Club® (AKC) and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA) have today issued statements to highlight their vehement disapproval of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)’s apparent policy of euthanizing animals frequently at its shelter in Norfolk, VA. Furthermore, the AKC has called for the PETA shelter to take steps towards balancing its adoption and euthanasia rates for dogs and cats in its shelter.

“While most shelters strive for a 90% re-homing rate, PETA is apparently proud of their 99% killing rate and callously boasts that the animals it rescues are ‘better off dead’. That is an alarming ratio that should be fully investigated. PETA’s track record is absolutely unacceptable,” said AKC Chairman Alan Kalter. “Legitimate animal shelters in America re-home most of their sheltered animals. If some of Michael Vick’s fighting dogs can be rehabilitated and re-homed then PETA can — and should — do better. If they cannot — or will not — then they should leave sheltering to others.”

“Re-homing a dog is not always the easiest but it is AKC’s preferred route. PETA’s apparent lack of commitment to re-homing is hypocritical. Our experience, through AKC clubs’ rescue network, proves that a rescued dog can often thrive if given the much-needed love, medical care, rehabilitation and responsible placement into a new home. AKC is disgusted that euthanasia is seemingly so easily employed by PETA.”

“While it is true that some animals at shelters are too physically injured or psychologically scarred to be adoptable, many of them can be successfully treated, rehabilitated and adopted, said VVMA President, Mark Finkler, D.V.M. “Veterinarians throughout Virginia work with numerous shelters and rescue groups to assist in the care of these dogs and cats. It is disappointing to hear that PETA has a different philosophy regarding the handling of these abandoned and unwanted pets."

Wow! Just...Wow! Sounds like they need some red paint thrown on them!

I had an "episode" with peta once. I was hungry--looking for a restaurant to go get lunch at--saw several people protesting outside a Kentucky Fried Chicken eatery-so I drove in and got out of the car and went to go ask one of them what they were protesting? as I had not been able to read their hand-held signs.

The guy I asked said they were protesting the way Chickens were fattened up and sent to slaughter.

I said: OK and just walked away and headed for the front door of their establishment. The guy said: "Are you actually going in there and eating?" and I said: "Its either that or ill be Grouse-hunting in the Vienna Woods".

The guy was speechless and I went inside and paid for my food-and purposely sitting at a table next to the window he was standing by--and started eating a piece of Chicken. The guy stared for about a minute-then changed his location of protest.

When my son was in high school his best friend's mother was a major wacko PeTA person who was arrested once for: releasing LOBSTERS from their water tank inside a supermarket and letting them crawl around on the floor!
The woman made a major mistake of coming inside my home to pick up her son one day. She was horrified to see white-tail deer, wild boar, antelope mounts and assorted mule deer racks on my walls. She commented right away, "Too bad animals don't have guns!"
I replied, "Yea, the first people the animals would shoot would be the people without guns." She left in a huff and I didn't see her son too much after that day.

My daughter's first husband was a spoiled, narcissistic little twerp who eventually proved to be bipolar as well. A hobby or a cause would put him over the edge into hypomania. One of his things was animal rights, and he would look at the TV listings and say things like, "That has to be a good show, the actress playing the lead is a big animal rights person."

I don't like the idea of using animals to test cosmetics (medical research is different), and think anyone who abuses a pet should be sentenced to precisely the same treatment. We have dog-fighting rings here and sometimes have bait dogs, chewed all to hell, dropped off in the area where I live. The people doing that should be chewed themselves. But the PETA folks impress me not at all.

Have you noticed that some of them wear leather belts and shoes and carry Coach bags?

I like the gag I heard a while back: a woman in Chicago wearing a fake fur coat had paint thrown on her by a man posing as an animal rights activist. :D

I think I understand PETA just a little about the tender care for all animals. I know I like my steak tenderized a little before throwing it on the grill.

And I have a problem with shooting birds too. It's rough when you bite down on a piece of #8 or #71/2 shot that you missed.:D

If God wanted us to eat vegies, he would have made them more fun to shoot.
My wife volunteers at a Humane Society shelter who claim to be 'no kill', not even close. They spend lot's of money on offices, meetings, trips ect.and send money to the national org. but as soon as they get close to full, dogs die.
