Hello everyone, I am new to the forum but have a question I bought a S&W M&P 15 PS OR almost a year ago, and the first time I fired it and cleaned it I didn't notice that the bolt was for a direct impingement system.

About about six months ago I was bored and reading the owners manual and noticed that I have the wrong bolt in my PS AR. In the owners manual the bolt for a piston system does not have the gas rings and needs a lil spring on the opposite end of the extractor.

I looked at mine and noticed that I have a direct impingement bolt in my rifle. I called S&W and they said I needed to send the entire rifle in, for the bolt to be replaced with the correct one. I have already added some mods and do not want to go this route as I do not want to put my rifle back to stock and send it in.

I asked them if I could just buy a piston bolt, and was told no. The bolt carrier group is correct just not the bolt.

I am just curious if anyone else bought a piston system AR 15 from S&W and had a direct impingement bolt in it? or where can I buy the correct bolt? I have searched many manufacturers and I cannot find any that sell a piston system specific bolt..

I have fired this weapon twice and have had a couple of malfunctions. I do not know if it is from the DI bolt. I would like to have the correct bolt in this rifle and see if that eliminates the previous malfunctions.

Thanks for any Info!!

You can usually drop one in to fit, unless it has significant wear on it (couple of thousand rounds they tend to break into the bbl extension). I would get a set of go/nogo gauges to verify headspace though....

BUT

ON a new rifle, suck it up and send it back.... don't play games trying to correct S&W's mistake..... just my .02

yeah I will have to have the FFL send it back. I am not sure if I wanna go through all that... I know some models that are PS just remove the gas rings... but in the manual the bolt is different that a DI model even if I was to remove the rings and install a spring... and to think I was getting a good rifle..

I was stunned when the rep said I need to send the whole rifle back even if I needed to replace the firing pin... that is some Bullcrap! well I will send it back.. to bad the place I bought it from is an hour away... and I thought adams arms parts is close to the S&W piston system... but even they do not have a "true" piston bolt for sale on their site... Thanks for info

Ibmikey is correct.

The reason you can't find any parts is that every brand of piston AR has its own proprietary parts and there is no standardization between companies.

Another reason i love gas.

When they decide to build a piston driven AR that outlives even the cheapest made AK, THEN (maybe) i'll think about a piston AR.

Adams Arms bolt is the same as a DI bolt, just no gas rings and a spring behind it. I would think S&W would send a shipping label your rifle if its under warranty due an incorrect part used during assembly.

Yeah S&W said I had to send the whole rifle in through a FFL regardless of what needs to be fixed. I asked them if my firing pin goes bad what do I do and they said send it back to them lol... I bought and adams arms spring that goes on the rear of the bolt and I am thinking of just taking my gas rings out.. and see how it operated then.. I saw a pick of an Adams arms piston bolt in their replacement part section but they didn't offer one...

Is there a tool I can buy to measure the head space? or a manual that breaks down the S&W ARS for user maintenance.. I have an army TM for ARs but it is for DI systems... and I am sure it varies from the S&W proprietary design..

I think it is a bunch of **** to send entire rifle back for a bolt... Well I will never purchase a S&W again.. just got the Ar 15 & 10 while I was in the army due to price.. but know I see what going cheap will get ya...

NO: I have sent many firearms back to SW for work over the last 20 years and they have NEVER requested it go through an FFL. I have a mailer coming now to return an item. I would strongly suggest that you send it in so that it will be done correctly and function correctly, since you are not an AR gunsmith. You are avoiding free repair/correction then denigrating the product?? With your current negative feelings for SW I will offer to buy your AR 10 since it was "cheap" And I happen to like the "cheap" poorly made M&P 15 in 223.300 whisper,308 win. Send me a PM, photo, price and I will send and FFL and MO, to help you relive the stress of having such a poor quality firearm.

AR 10 is fine will not sell sorry dude nor will I sell the AR 15 I will just build around.. just amazed at how a DI bolt can be put in a PS rifle... that is just plain negligence.. and then request that my entire rifle for home protection be shipped off, after I return to stock.. that is ridiculous.. I should be able to send the bolt to them.. and have a the correct bolt sent back to me.. Glock did this for me with a recoil rod... I just think S&W markets their rifles as M&P and sells them only to service members as a marketing ploy... I will keep them as I have many other mods on them and I can do a malfunction drill rather fast if need be on the AR-15 or switch to my side arm... good luck on buying another pissed off customers rifle..

If they are such great rifles why do you have a mailer coming to return and item?? And yes you are correct they are cheap and poorly made.. Thanks for the clarification :) Oh come to find out S&W has changed there design for the piston sytems,,, to adams arms style... . so they no longer require a spring on the bolt and use a DI bolt, and please don't exaggerate my comments in the future.. and then patronize me.. If you do not have any useful information to share don't post a lame comment.. and try to get me to sell you my rifle for "cheap" really guy are you a therapist and can make the assumption that this is causing me so much stress I must sell it.. and yes it it a poor quality firearm that is why they sell them for dirt cheap lmao.... if my spouse would have let me I would have purchased a 3 grand AR and not had any issues... I will seel you it for $2,500 stock... google it and you can see the pictures of what one looks like.. PM me if ya wanna buy it I only accept paypal.

DD: So much stress. You misunderstood what I meant. All manufacturers may mistakes and they were trying there best to resolve it. They wanted the "whole" firearm to check and make sure that nothing else was out of spec, so that you would be satisfied with their product, not unreasonable.
As for the AR-10 I was joking since you had not complained of any problems with it. I do not know disgruntled S&W owners that have not had any problem resolved.
Back as your therapist I can not understand why you would want to keep " poorly made", "cheap" rifles to use as home defense??? Apparently it is not your major concern. And why would you want to keep a non functioning rifle ( if you just returned the bolt), to use as a bat?? I would have thought you would want to sell and buy a 3 grand AR, I have some but there are not for sale to you till you master the basic skills.
Exaggeration of your comments is not possible. Even if you would {seel} it for 2500 I do not use paypal, sorry.
You apparently will get very good at your malfunction drills.
As for the mailer, I did not say it was for a rifle, and it will be determined whether my use or a manufacturing problem is at fault. I will keep you informed.
I guess you will also be leaving the forum since you were able to complain. Wish you the best of luck, I do Thank You for service to our country. Be Safe,
