Hi, all;
I'm twisting in anticipation of getting my 15-22 & I was hoping you more experienced users could share your favorite nuggets of wisdom with regard to must-have accessories, must-know info, or (most important) things to avoid with regard to this well-reviewed weapon.

I've done all the pre-purchase research, of course, but would greatly value any expeerienced advice so I can start tooling up before my new joy arrives.

Way back in the 80's, I spent several years getting quite familiar with the M16 & M16-A1, so casting things from that perspective would do fine.

Thanks for anything you care to share!

get real familiar with the weapon before going nuts with accessories. we all know that adding things is half the fun, but spend your budget on ammo at first. then add things slowly, so you can gauge each items effectiveness.

So far, it's sounding just like my "car" hobby. :D It's an article of faith amongst car people that no project car is EVER complete.

I have that special form of direct deposit called "Check To Wife," so budgetary control should be well in hand for now. Unless of course she decides she likes shooting this piece. Then I may be doomed.

Great advice so far; keep it coming!

when i told my wife i was heading off to the gun store to buy a $500 .22 she was a little mad. she shot it the next day and asked when i was going to buy her one!

like every every one said...shoot it first and go from there...i had some furniture left from a mossberg 715t(junk gun) that i put on the smith. it wasn't much...a utg red dot and a foregrip as well as a laser/flashlight that was originally on my sigma.

the foregrip works well, but the red dot is going to be replaced soon by a normal scope. this gun is more accurate than the mossjunk could ever be so i find myself wanting a little more accuracy than the red dot can give.

Buy .22lr for good prices whenever you can,and lots of it. With 25 round mags these 15-22's can really eat lots of ammo very quickly. And I have 2 of them between 3 shooters.

Trapped as I am (by jobs and investments) in the Peepuls' Republik of Kalifornistan, I will be stuck with 10-rnd mags.

Ordered a couple extra mags & a box of Aguila from Midway - - kind of in anticipation. Of course, the Aguila would likely run nicely through the 40's vintage Hi-Standard HD Military that Dad passed down to me, so there's no 'risk' involved in that regard!

When you go to the range take more ammo than you think you'll shoot.

I run out every time...wishing I had brought just 100 more rounds.

I now carry at least 500 rounds in my range bag.

I truly can't wait until Cali gets me my new DL, so I can pick up my new unit and find out.

Shooting pistol, I generally run out of thumb-skin from reloading the HD-Mil's mags before I run out of rounds. B^P

I have an Uplula for my M&P9 FS - - major difference in ease of loading. Brilliant little device.

I guess a .22LR version will be called for now - -especially with the 15-22 in the wings.

Actually, with the load assist button, there is no need for a loader, there is virtually no pressure on the thumb. I load a 25-round magazine in 60 seconds.

There is a chance mind you just a chance you may get one that has ejection problems, mine did right out of the box, I tried to put it off on everything, ammo , being new , the way I loaded the mags until parts came flying out. If it does not run good at first just go ahead & send it back it will not get better.

No plinker tactical mags.

& last when this thing is running good it is a blast, going out in the morning to see if I can knock a squirrel out of the top of a tree.

Except the CA 10rd long magazines don't have a load button:(.

I took about 10-12 inches of 550 cord (aka paracord) slipped it through the hole in the follower and put big knots on both ends to make my own load assist. The cord lays in the side grooves on the magazine and does not interfere with function.

I recommend the 10rd shorties, the have load buttons and are all I take to the range now.

Sadly for me, the 10-round mags required by this place I live do not have load-assist buttons.

I will be remedying that. Either by BlueOvalBandit's method or some other hardware chicanery.

The HD-Mil has a load-assist, but it is small, and thin, and rather sharp-edged. Makes world-class thumb-divots after a couple hours at the bangshack.

BOBandit, I happen to be sitting in Anaheim Hills right this minute. I live further east (Chino Hills), but work in AH. Nice meetin' ya!

Easily fixed. If you look at the pic of my 15-22 in the thread about shooting suppressed for the first time, that magazine I used (only used one for all shooting today) is a S&W 10 round long. Dang thing is defective and broke, because now it holds 25 rounds & has the load buttons. :D

EDIT: Just read and seems the buttons I have only work if you convert to 25 rounds. Sorry.
