New to the platform - advice?

Oh, happy day... Finally, made it down to the Prado Olympic Shooting Park for a morning. Firing at 50 yards... I think yards have gotten longer since my 20's, as those Baker targets looked a serious long ways off.

300ish rounds, with not a single misfire, failure to feed, failure to eject, or any major operational issues at all. Three hours at the range with two good friends (one experienced, one novice) & one serious good time. Would have stayed longer but we all had other things needing doing today.

First half-dozen mags or so, the bolt was not locking open on the final shot, but this improved later to where the last dozen or so all locked properly. At first, I thought the load assist buttons I'd added may have been prefventing full upward travel, but apparently this was just a break-in issue.

It's true - - this is a very, very fun rifle. Tight, comfortable, easy to manage, and works smoothly. Just seems to fall into my hands when I pick it up.

At this point I don't even feel compelled to monkey with the trigger - - it pulls very smooth & even, with a crisp break, and a very noticeable reset. (My M&P9FS, on the other hand, needs some help in that department.)

Fired mostly CCI MiniMag (200 rds worth), Aguila Standard Velocity (100), but traded with another shooter so I could try 25 of his Winchester M-22 that he was running through his match-barrelled 10/22, and just to see what happened, I ran a 10-rd mag of my leftover Remington Golden thru too.

Results:
CCI MiniMag; sharp strong round with virtually no smoking or noticeable ejecta (being a lefty I notice such things). Cycles the bolt strongly, quite accurate round. Zero issues.

Aguila Standard-Vel; Noticeably weaker round than the CCI; quieter both on report and in the action cycling, less recoil, even the casings eject less vigorously. Low/no smoke, no ejecta. Still perfectly adequate to operate the weapon and to hit within the limits of open-sight/elbow-rested stability on my part. And yes, it does smell like 'burnt pineapple' (to me, it smelled like hot plexiglas) No issues.

Winchester W-22; nice strong round, went where directed quite accurately, seemed to group a bit better than either of the others though it's hard to judge from just 25 rounds. Clean burning. No issues.

Remington Golden Bullet; Smoked like a dirty chimney, tended to blow noticeable ejecta (probably unburnt powder grains). Loud and strong, Cycled and fed fine, couldn't really judge accuracy (we were shooting swinging targets at the time) but a very dirty round. Don't think I'll be using them in the 15-22 in future. Dad's pistol likes them OK so they won't go to waste.

Looking forward to my next chance out. Got a car show coming up so it'll be a couple weeks.

Time to go clean baby!

I think I sold two more rifles for S&W today: one of my friends, and the gent who was shooting the 10/22, both stated intentions to own one. :D

Couple pics; messing around with the cheap holo sight I bought (which worked quite well, actually) as well as friend Andrew's AimPoint. The view from the table, and friends Sarah and Andrew taking a round at bat, and spotting.

First impression on the ARMS sites is kind of mixed. Mold quality & hardware machining could be a bit better; visible mold parting lines, a little bit of sprue, screws are not high-end - - -but then, $37.

Clamping function is one-piece, so the clamping screw has to removed to mount/demount then the sight is slid on from the end of the rail.

The sure-enough metal rear apetures are coated with so much protectant that I haven't gotten them clean yet; their finish is semi-gloss rathe than matte, which seems odd for sight apetures. Maybe they are flat when they are fully degreased.

Very light compared to the iron sights.

The folding and latching functions seem to work well. Pop goes the weasels.

I need to get a front sight adjusting tool beore I'll be able to try them out; according to my holo sight, the pin is considerably high.

More on them when I finally get to put them to the test.
