Shield 40 Mishap

I have learned from personal experience. If you doubt a factory will cover a "kaboom" or abnormal breakage (cracked frame or slide) then do what I did on past occasions. Look into sending the firearm off for non destructive testing/inspecting that will generate a report about any metallurgical, polymer, or build defects. Yes, it was costly on both occasions.

Isn't that like closing the barn door after the horses are out? If any defects are found, couldn't the company claim that they were caused by the kaboom?

When I used to compete I had something similar happen with my 1911. I was told that it was called superface. It had nothing to do with having a double charge of powder in the bullet. It was caused by weakening of the wall on the brass. When we inspected the brass there was a nice lightning bolt shaped splIt in it. What happened to the shield sounds ammo related. Though it's scary to think that factory ammo might have weakened brass.

Just to let you know........

Federal had a recall on .40 ammo from the early to mid 90's. Weak brass had caused kabooms in unsupported chambers. OP mentioned the ammo was from 1997. Does it have FC headstamps on it? This was one of the indicators of the weak brass. Glock has corrected this by making the chambers more supported and Federal did it by modifying their brass.

Good luck with S&W.

I have been following this thread and sorry to hear about the issue with your Shield. While my Shield did not go kaboom, it did have FTE issue and currently at S&W. I was hoping someone on the forum has an idea what the lead time is for sending a gun to S&W for repair. I guess I got my answer. This is rather disappointing since I really like to the look, feel, and trigger of the Shield. I must say Ruger has the best customer service from my experience, I had an issue with my LCP takedown pin a while back, I call Ruger by the time I got off the phone, I had an RMA return label in my inbox. That was the middle of the week. They sent me an email Monday morning and called me telling me they have to replace the gun, I upgraded to a LC9 and by Tuesday morning my LC9 was at the FFL...I was really hoping S&W was similar...

Well Federal got the remaining ammo as well as the box and they didn't say anything about a recall. It was posted earlier in the thread.

All you can do is call them back. I'm sorry this is happening to you.

I have a similar situation, but the wait has a much worse effect. I too am waiting for a call and all I can do is sit and wait. I'd trade you in a heartbeat, but you don't want my problem.

What sucks is that the gun is done. Has been for 10 days today. A rep just has to call and give me the results. A 2 min phone call. Really 10 days?

Whatever it is you are in my prayers. Sounds serious, and hope & pray the news is what you are hoping not what you are fearing.

I'm sorry to hear about all of the trouble you are having with S&W and your Shield. I sent mine in recently for the trigger recall and it took a month to get it back. The date on the test cartridge was November 2012 so the recall does seem to affect Shields made quite a while back. I hope you hear something soon.

Not to belabor the point but it was not a recall. It was a Safety Alert. There really is a difference.

Let's be precise. It was an "IMPORTANT CONSUMER SAFETY ALERT and INSPECTION PROCEDURE".

When a manufacturer notifies me of a potential safety condition, and the product is returned at their request for repair, that's a recall.

The point of my original reply was how long it took for the repair to occur.

Sarcasm alert: I guess S&W's "Ka-Boom" department is busy...

Additional sarcasm alert: You had better be careful when handling the replacement 40 S&W ammo Federal sent you. Apparently some think 40 S&W rounds might even go off if handled roughly.

Seriously, we're all glad you were not hurt in the incident. S&W will get you squared away eventually, but I'm sure they are still somewhat busy with their "safety alert" (considered a synonym for RECALL by most of us).

You are close to a resolution and I'm sure you will be happy once it is done. My 9mm Shield has been flawless... Some might even say it is very close to "Perfection".

Keep us posted...

Nope can't use the word perfection unless it was a Glock that blew up :p

Is this a normal primer strike? I just been looking things over and noticed this.

That's what my spent primer looks like that came with my 40 shield I bought today.

Not required to return shield to mfg. field test n if it passes no worries if not needed returned. XD was mandatory recall. My 2 shields were aok

The xds was a voluntary recall. They recalled them all and didn't have a fix, an update or whatever you want to call it because it took them two months to duplicate the "problem." There was no problem from the get go. If we went back to having to have everyone have common sense and proper firearm safety and knowledge, the few rare occurrences would have never happened.

Did sending my sig 938 back to sig for broken parts THREE times after the recall make it not a recall? When all the parts were post recall fixes and part of the failing parts

Per my post, my S&W Shield 9 is only able to muster "...very close to perfection." Really good, but not perfect.

Additionally, I never enjoy stories of anyone's pistol blowing up... Regardless of brand.
