I just purchased a 617 & 63 recently. After their first trip to the range, I decided to clean them. My question about these 22s. Why can't I run a bore cleaning rod with a 22 caliber brush or a patch tip clean through the barrel with the cylinder out. The rod acts like it is hitting a restriction approximately 1/2" or so before exiting the barrel on the cylinder side.

I can see that it appears there is a step or reduce bore at the start of the rifling. Heck, I a couple of hundred rounds through them and didn't have any problems. But the bore is reduced in this area and a 22 caliber cleaning attachments will not pass through this point.

Shooting at 5 & 7 yards ( indoor range ) appeared to be good. Grouping ok. Haven't sighted in yet or tried distance shooting.

arjay. I think your right. Checked them again and appears to be lead. Going to local gun store and purchase a new bore light, bronze brush and something for removing lead. I was shooting Remington ThunderBolts. These were not copper jacketed. I will keep you posted. Thanks

Thunderbolts have a reputation for doing that.Stop at the grocery or Walmart and get some copper choreboy scrub pads.Wrap a few threads around the bore brush and it will shred that lead right out of there

I recently purchased a 63. The barrel was leaded up pretty good. I used a bore snake to go back and forth from the forcing cone up to the crown. Large chunks of lead came out. I used Rem Oil to lube it up between passes.

I think you have found the source of your problem. The only time I ever leaded the bore of a 22 was using Remington Thunderbolts and not allowing the barrel to cool down for a few minutes after ca 20 shots.

Thanks everyone. I made a trip to Carter Country and purchased a bore light, multiple 22 bronze brushes, shooters choice MC #7 bore cleaner and patches. I can't believe the lead fouling from the Remington Thunderbolt cartridges. Wow, both guns were fouled so severely, a cleaning rod couldn't pass through the bore near the cylinder. I will never again shoot a non- copper coated or jacketed bullet again in my personal guns. Now time to see what they did to the MP15-22. Ty again.

Ive had similar experience.....Very little or no bullet lube on the Remington Thunderbolts. Switched to Winchester Wildcats and issue was DRASTICALLY reduced. Good luck
