Rifle Comparrison

I own one of the Mfour-22's by Chiappa. Palmetto State Armory was giving them away with the purchase of any PSA AR. So $799 for a .223 and a complete .22 as well was intriguing. Once I found out that the Mfour-22 was built on a full multi-caliber lower, I had to get the deal.

The good:
-As I said above, it is built on a full lower. I can take the .223 upper and slap it on the .22 lower and fire. The same goes the other way around.
-Accuracy is good enough. Not 10/22 good, but it can keep a 1" ragged hole going at 25 yards all day long.
-Magazines are almost as easy to find as 15-22 magazines.
-ATI is pro-2nd amendment. They are moving out of New York because of their politics.

The bad:
-On the first range trip, every other round was a misfire. Bang, click. Bang, click. This was with Winchester 333's, Remington, and Eley Match. They recommend a break-in with American Eagle or CCI. Miraculously, I had 300 rounds of American Eagle, so I tried those. Flawless. After 200 rounds Winchester was Bang-Bang Click.
I took it home, and took a small file to the casting errors, edges, and improper wear areas. Now it fires properly with about anything. The bolt wasn't headspacing properly, now it is better.
-There is a bulge in the cases after firing in the feed ramp. The ramp cut-in on the chamber leaves an unsupported area. Cheap ammo can blow out in that area. This is a compromise to increase feed reliablity.
-The lower is polymer. I am not going to say Poly lowers are ****, but I would like aluminum better. Especially on a direct blowback bolt.

So in review, with tinkering, it can be made to work. I still would not count on it to go bang every time, but that is not a huge issue for me with a .22. It will also require a break-in with specific ammo which can be difficult in the current ammo situation. If the Chiappa/ATI was on the shelf next to a 15-22, both at MSRP, I would get the 15-22 every time.

Yes, I know they do, but for the price paid, it should have had that function out of the box. When you buy the complete rifle from CMMG, that adapter should come with it.
A lot of people don't care and I personally don't use it much myself. When I finished 2nd in the Wounded Warrior rifle side match at the 2012 Ruger Rimfire World Championship I had continued shooting my AR conversion the 2nd day instead of the 15-22 I used on Day 1. The way I beat John Allchin (world champ) in that match was I went to tactical reload mode, meaning I counted rounds in the back of my head and dumped the mag for another one when I had something over 20 shot out of the 26 loaded into it. If you do that there is little or no speed difference between the 15-22 and a .22 conversion or .22 upper.

I have never had my CMMG .22 conversion fail to go bang (except when the mag went dry). I felt confident enough at the 2012 Ruger Rimfire World Championship to switch from my 15-22 to my cheap AR w/CMMG kit the second day without skipping a beat. Built that into a full Taccom .22 upper. Right now I use it with the lower from my 3-gun AR which has the same S3G trigger as my 15-22. Its only waiting till I complete my move to WV from the People's Republic of Maryland so I can buy a polymer lower again to make it a complete .22 AR.

The whole reason I bought the mp15-22 was for a ar trainer and as a mil member it is perfect. Only thing I would like to see is a bigger charging handle stock. I will be. Buying one. Not having a forward assist doesn't bother me because no one uses them anyways :p

I completely agree on the forward assist. It has its place and I have one on my AR build, but if the round isn't properly advancing, then the last thing I want to do is jam it into place. I'd rather extract the round (being that there is probably some kind of imperfection) rather than jamming it forward, firing it, then stovepiping my weapon and taking it further out of commision until I can clear the stovepipe. No thanks.

As far as the best of the listed options, it has to be the S&W. That's the reason we all landed here, isn't it? Look, the Mossberg is attractive with the price. But, for pure AR functionality, the S&W has it beat. It's also a nicely built package. I love Mossberg. I have two Mossberg shotties, but the S&W simply makes the Mossberg look pathetic. I didn't even consider the other options and have no regrets of not looking into them.

If you are interested in something other than the Colt "look" You would be way ahead to get a Sig 522.....period. best regards Plum
