because they're stupid, ignorant or just plain lazy. It really cheeses me off.

I HATE "You're welcome" so I say either "no problem" or "my pleasure!"
and I am NOT stupid, ignorant or lazy and I resent you implying that!!!

I must confess. It has become a recent comment amongst the younger restaurant "help" these days to say, "No problem." When I say "Thank you".
I want to stop them and say.............
"No problem indicates to me that I am a problem. I am not a problem I am your paycheck. It is proper to say 'You're welcome'."
BUT.....I don't care to go around telling other people what to say. I said, "Thank you." and if their response is not scatological or alarming I just let it go.

"No problem" is probably better than responding to "thank you" with "thank you".

Social useage changes This bothers me far less than, "absolutely!"
Or people being asked how they are and saying, "good" instead of, "fine."
I think a lot of it comes from inarticulate actors and other celebrities. I mentioned elsewhere here a couple of days ago that when Mila Kunis was invited to a Marine ball, her asst. pronounced "Corps" on the air as "Corpse." I kid you not.
And Kunis herself was so clueless that she thought she needed a date, so she asked Justin Timberlake, her recent co-star in, "Friends With Benefits" to take her. I believe it was Timberlake who told her that her date would properly be the Marine NCO who extended the invitation.
(She did attend and later told an interviewer that she had fun, much to her surprise, I suspect.)
The actress was born in one of the former Soviet socialist states, but has lived in the USA for most of her life...

maybe it was the way they were taught or heard it from someone that they were cool, could it be the future i do believe new times are here. I dont really know just guessing

Seriously, if the response is civil and gracious, I try to accept it as such.
If someone thanks me as they get off my bus, my usual response is "You are very welcome, and thank you for riding." I will mix it up a bit so as not to say the same thing to everybody.
Slang for "your welcome". People want to be different. Are all the people that want to knuckle bump instead of shaking hands really germaphobic? And how did Colorado get so many people that need medical marijuana? Does Colorado have a high cancer rate? The things we ponder.

That doesn't actually surprise me, I guess. Scares me some! Says a lot about him that we can't express here.
But the Kunis gaffe was a couple of years ago, and probably preceded what you cited. And I bet it's a common error of younger Americans.

It's a young kid thing - drives my wife absolutely nuts. It started creeping into my speech, too, until I made an effort to replace it with the far classier, "My pleasure."

I tend to say your welcome to people near my age group or older, & I'll say no worries or not a problem to someone younger. Just trying to communicate in a way that I can be understood.
